4
Harjoitustyö
• Osallistuminen Googlen maailmanlaajuiseen
kilpailuun ”Google Online Marketing Challenge”
• Suunnittele ja toteuta Google AdWords –kampanja
oikealle yritykselle!
• Tehdään ryhmissä (n. 5 henkeä)

Google Online Marketing Challenge
• Google AdWords serves as a vehicle for gathering real
world data and discussing online advertising‟s role in
online marketing. Teams, however, must discuss other
aspects of online marketing such as website layout and
offline promotion, in both written reports. The competition
is about real-world applications of online marketing;
Google AdWords is merely the platform.

DIGIMARKKINOINNIN
PERUSTEET
Tykkäätkö klikeistäni?
10
Digimarkkinointi: Määritelmä
”Digital Marketing is the promoting of brands using all forms of
digital advertising channels to reach consumers. This now
includes Television, Radio, Internet, mobile, social media
marketing and any other form of digital media.
Whilst digital marketing does include many of the techniques and
practices contained within the category of Internet Marketing, it extends
beyond this by including other channels with which to reach people that
do not require the use of The Internet. As a result of this non-reliance on
the Internet, the field of digital marketing includes a whole host of
elements such as mobile phones, sms/mms, display / banner ads and
digital outdoor.”
11
Mitä digitaaliseen markkinointiin kuuluu?
Ainakin nämä:
– kaikki mainonta sähköisessä mediassa
– hakukonemarkkinointi (Google)
– markkinointi sosiaalisessa mediassa (Facebook, Twitter)
– kumppanuusmarkkinointi (affiliate marketing)
– sähköpostimarkkinointi
– mobiilimarkkinointi (LBS, QR)
– sisältömarkkinointi
12
Miksi Internet on tärkeä markkinoijille?
13
”Suomalaisia
netinkäyttäjiä on paljon,
ja he viettävät verkossa
entistä enemmän aikaa.
Nettiä vähintään kerran
viikoissa käyttäviä 15-
79-vuotiaita on jo
hieman yli kolme
miljoonaa. He viettävät
internetissä aikaa
keskimäärin 7 tuntia
viikossa.” (TNS 2007)
Koska asiakkaat
ovat siellä!
Lopun alkua massamedialle?
14
Ei vielä…
15
Harhaluulot digistä (3 väitettä):
• VÄITE 1: ”Nettimarkkinointi on ilmaista, koska Facebook ei
maksa mitään.”
Digitaalinen markkinointi ei ole ilmaista; media maksaa
vähemmän, mutta luovia aivoja tarvitaan silti suunnittelemaan &
toteuttamaan (taloustiede: KAIKELLA on vaihtoehtoiskustannus).
• VÄITE 2: ”Digimarkkinointi syrjäyttää täysin perinteisen
mainonnan.”
Näin ei ole, vaan kyse on rinnakkaisesta ilmiöstä; lehtipaperi on
elossa & potkii vielä.
• VÄITE 3: ”Digimarkkinointi on pääasiassa multimediaa
hyödyntävää markkinointia.”
$29 biljoonaa kertoo, että alaa hallitsevat sanat.
What about the old tricks?
I just love this Kotler guy… ♥
Hell yeah! The same marketing rules still apply.
Miksi?
• Koska PSYKOLOGIA ei ole muuttunut
• Markkinointi on aina ollut kuuntelua, suostuttelua,
ideoiden synnyttämistä ja mielikuvien luontia.
”…even if the medium had changed, basic human needs
have not. And, indeed, it turns out that there are a lot of
lessons from 1982 that are still quite useful for a 2007
search engine marketer.”
─David Rodnitzky, Online Retail Marketing

Mikä tekee digimediasta erilaisen?
1. diffuusion nopeus (verkostoefekti)
2. matala aloituskynnys (300.000 sovellusta)
3. matala vaihtamiskustannus (switching cost)
4. hintojen läpinäkyvyys (vertaa.fi)
5. long tail

Internetmainonnan
kehitys ja haasteet
Mistä kaikki alkoi? (Bännerimainokset.)
“They first started in 1994 and are therefore almost as
old as the Web itself.
– They were very effective back then, with the original
ad garnering a 78% click-through rate (CTR)! I
guess from there we had nowhere to go but down.
Nowadays banner ads get on average 0.2%
CTR meaning for every 1,000 ads that are served up
only 2 people click on them.
– And as Jon Steinberg of Buzzfeed points out, the
CTRs for social media banner ads are just 0.08%.”

Internet-mainonnan kehitys
27
Internet-mainonnan tehoon vaikuttavia
tekijöitä (Salminen 2012, working paper)
t = (k, s, m, f, t, r, l, h, o)
– koko (px)
– sijoittelu (elementit, above/below)
– muut mainokset (clutter)
– formaatti (rich media, novelty)
– toisto (burn, fatigue)
– kävijöiden määrä ja laatu
– mainospaikan hinta (Kauppalehden etusivu 25.000 €)
– mainoksen houkuttelevuus (CTR)
• ulkoasu
• yhteensopivuus vierailijan preferenssien ja intention
kanssa

Above the fold, below the fold (prominenssi 3)
“‟Above the fold’ is a graphic design concept that refers to the
location of an important news story or a visually
appealing photograph on the upper half of the front page of
a newspaper, or in case of webpages, the part of a page that‟s visible
without scrolling. Most papers are delivered and displayed to
customers folded up, meaning that only the top half of the front page
is visible. Thus, an item that is „above the fold‟ may be one that
the editors feel will entice people to buy the paper. Alternatively, it
reflects a decision, on the part of the editors, that the article is one of
the day‟s most important. By extension, the space above the fold is
also preferred by advertisers, since it is the most prominent and
visible even when the newspaper is on stands.”
– näkyy myös hakutuloksissa, korkeammalla olevia klikataan eniten
– hakukoneet voivat korostaa sisältöä, joka on sijoitettu ylemmäs
– ÄLÄ OLE below the fold.
31
Vierittämisen laskevat tuotot (diminishing
returns of scrolling)
32
33
Bännerisokeus (Benway & Lane 1998)
“The term „banner blindness‟ was coined by Benway and
Lane as a result of website usability tests where a
majority of the test subjects either consciously or
unconsciously ignored information that was presented
in banners.
– Subjects were given tasks to search information on a
website. The information that was overlooked included
both external advertisement banners and internal
navigational banners, e.g. quick links. The placement
of the banners on a web page had little effect on
whether or not the subjects noticed them. The result of
the study contradicted the popular web design
guideline that larger, colourful and animated elements
on a website are more likely to be seen by users.”
34
Bännerisokeus (banner blindness)
“Heatmaps from eyetracking studies: The areas where users looked the most
are colored red; the yellow areas indicate fewer views, followed by the least-
viewed blue areas. Gray areas didn‟t attract any fixations. Green boxes were
drawn on top of the images after the study to highlight the advertisements.”
(Nielsen 2007) 35
Brändäys: tekosyy vai todellisuutta?
“Online ads are branding tools. Direct clicks are
simply a happy byproduct. Banner advertising is most
commonly sold on a CPM basis (and with CTR’s like
that, it’s no wonder).
CPMs on B2B publisher sites typically range anywhere
from $30 to $120, meaning that a banner advertiser is
paying $15-$60 per click based on the average CTR of
0.21%.” (Pick 2008)
36
Bännerimainonnan epäselvät hyödyt
“In the IAB study, brand advertisers indicated that their
number one objective in online advertising was „creating
awareness‟ followed by „creating purchase intent‟ or
„likelihood to recommend‟ the product. Yet these seem
to be the least effective attributes of banner
advertising.”
37
Bännerisokeuden rajat?
“Several readers have asked whether banner
blindness extends to search engine ads. It doesn‟t:
text ads on a SERP get a decent number of fixations.
The other exception is classified ads. Finally,
it‟s possible that commercials that are embedded within
a video stream get viewed; we haven‟t researched this
yet. So there are either 2 or 3 exceptions to the general
rule that users avoid looking at ads on websites.”
(Nielsen 2007)
38
Internet-markkinoinnin uutuusarvo (novelty
effect)
”Many Web advertising studies are misleading, possibly
because most such studies come from advertising
agencies.
The most common distortion is the novelty effect:
whenever a new advertising format is introduced, it’s
always accompanied by a study showing that the new
type of ad generates more user clicks.
Sure, that‟s because the new format enjoys a temporary
advantage: it gathers user attention simply because it‟s
new and users have yet to train themselves to ignore it.
The study might be genuine as far as it goes, but it says
nothing about the new advertising format‟s long-term
advantages once the novelty effect wears off.”
39
Miten saavuttaa asiakas fragmentoituneessa
mediassa? (Kävijöiden määrä)
“There are millions of web sites, and it’s impossible
to manually seek out every site where you would
like your ad to show. It is also difficult if you are
running a standard content campaign to always have
your ad shown on a site that is converting, because
other advertisers are in the potential queue to show up
on those sites as well.” (Geddes 2009)
(välittäjien merkitys)
40
Vierailijoiden laatu (quality of traffic)
“Conversion rates for B2B ads continue to average
about 2.8%. That means, on average, you‟d need
17,000 impressions to generate one lead—at an
average cost of $1,258! So again: banner ads are
branding, not revenue or lead generation. They may
very well have a role to play in your marketing mix, but
it‟s important to understand what that role is.” (Pick
2008)
41
Korkea ”bounce” (mainonnan mittaaminen ei
lopu klikkaukseen!)
a) “In the dot-com bubble days, it was fashionable to
discuss website stickiness. Now, stickiness must be
reconceptualized for the real world rather than the
bubble. It‟s not a goal to make users spend hours on
your site. Let them go about their business.
b) The real goal is to make users come back, and to
have them come directly to your site instead of
clicking on expensive ads. The ideas above are just
a few ways to encourage repeat business. Further
in-depth studies of user behaviors and customer
needs should reveal many new ways of keeping
users loyal.” (Nielsen 2006)
42
Internet-mainonnan kohdennettavuus
(targeting)
• ”On the theory that properly targeted ads will fetch
more consumer interest, the publisher (or seller)
can charge a premium for these ads over random
advertising or ads based on the context of a site.”
• Kohdennustekijät
– intentio (Google)
– maantieteellinen sijainti (Google, Facebook)
– demografia (Facebook)
– käyttäytyminen (event tracking, käytettävyystestit)
– preferenssit (Facebook)
• Just-in-time marketing?
43
(Internet-)markkinoinnin haaste: skeptismi
“The second, and probably more prevalent challenge
faced today (especially by marketers), is that people
have such little time and trust.
For the post-modern consumer, marketing messages
have a scant few seconds to start a conversation.
Even if more time was available, the average person
responds to any claim of value with a skeptical mindset.
Getting the right message at the right time has never
been more important; and it‟s never been more difficult.”
Heikon laadun kysymykseen palataan myöhemmin!
44
Wanamaker-dilemma ja sen ratkaisu
• “Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted;
the trouble is I don’t know which half.”
– PERINTEINEN markkinointiongelma: Miten
mitataan tulosta?
– Internet-mainontaa voi mitata paremmin.
• Keskeiset mittarit
– CPM (cost per mille)
– CPC (cost per click)
– CPA (cost per action)
– CTR (click-through rate)
– CVR (conversion rate)
– CPS, ROI, CAC, CLV…
• Mittarit eivät kuitenkaan korvaa asiakkaan
ymmärtämistä! 45
Johtopäätökset
• Internet-mainonnan absoluuttinen tehokkuus laskee
helposti uutuusarvon karistessa ja kilpailijoiden
omaksuessa uudet metodit
• mainostajat ovat kuitenkin kiinnostuneempia
suhteellisesta tehokkuudesta, jota voidaan vertailla
eri kanavien välillä
• hinnat joustavat alaspäin (CPM) MUTTA myös ylös
(CPC)
46
