2006 alumnus Oliver Russell has established a solid career as an Architectural blacksmith since graduating from UCA.

He now runs a successful architectural metalwork business through which he enjoys working on a broad range of exciting and complex commissions.

Oliver has been a member of the esteemed Worshipful Company of Ironmongers since graduation and has recently been elected onto the committee.

Oliver describes himself as a traditional blacksmith and although he also enjoys working on more contemporary commissions, his speciality in large-scale traditional metalwork has made him a popular choice for those who require this niche style. An additional element of his work which sets him apart is his comprehensive service which covers the designing, making and installing of each bespoke piece.

Oliver’s impressive portfolio of work includes metalwork screens which were featured in a gold-medal winning show garden at Hampton Court, intricate staircases for elaborate new-build properties and even the stylish gates of the Crafts Study Centre at Farnham UCA.

Having had significant success in recent years, Oliver praises his MA course for helping him to transition from a student into a reputable self-employed artist. He said: “I would highly recommend an MA in metalwork. The lecturers and technicians at UCA are very supportive and the course content equips you with some really valuable professional practice skills, which are essential when setting up your own business. Through presentations and project proposals, the MA also greatly enhanced my confidence and this has been a really important attribute throughout my career so far.”
