Where is this smart motorway?
Smart motorways are a technology driven approach to the use of our motorways, improving journey times and controlling traffic flows through variable speed limits.
Highways England is working to deliver a smart motorway scheme on the M6 between junctions 16 and 19. This is a major strategic route connecting people, communities and businesses, carrying around 132,000 vehicles per day.
At present the route is characterised by:
Congestion Unpredictable journey times a higher than average
accident rate1
a significant proportion of heavy goods vehicle traffic2
Using our knowledge of operating smart motorways on other sections of our motorway network we have further developed this approach for a number of future schemes, including a section of the M6 between junctions 16 and 19. This approach is known as smart motorways – all lanes running (SM-ALR), where the hard shoulder is permanently converted to a running lane.
Signs and signals will be used to inform drivers of conditions on the network and when variable mandatory speed limits are in place. These will be positioned on verge mounted gantries on the left hand side of the road.
This scheme will support the economy by providing much needed additional capacity at reduced costs while maintaining safety for drivers, their passengers and those who work on the roads.

What you will see on a smart motorway The key features of a smart motorway – all lanes running design are:
Four running lanes in each direction, creating more capacity
Electronic signals to control speed, close lanes and provide information to drivers
Emergency refuge areas, with telephones, at regular intervals to provide an area of relative safety for drivers whose vehicles have broken down
CCTV coverage over the full length of the managed motorway section to help identify incidents and manage traffic
Upgrade of central reserve barrier to rigid concrete
Public information exhibition
We will be holding an exhibition in the local area, giving you the opportunity to find out more about the scheme and to ask any questions you may have.
