Ever Had Doubts?

Often with Doubts: Actions speak louder than Word

Mar 16:20 ESV And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.

Rom 10:17 ESV So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

John Sends Two of His DisciplesLuk 7:17-19 ESV And this report about him spread through the whole

of Judea and all the surrounding country. (18) The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, (19) calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, "Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?"

John the Baptist was in PrisonMat 11:2-3 ESV Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the

Christ, he sent word by his disciples (3) and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?"

Why was John in prison?Mar 6:17-18 ESV For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because he had married her. (18) For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."

Did John Have Doubts about Jesus? The same John: Read John 3:23-36

Joh 1:29-34 ESV The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (30) This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.' (31) I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel." (32) And John bore witness: "I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. (33) I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' (34) And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God."

Did John Have Doubts about Jesus?1. John, knowing his likely fate may have done this for his disciples.

2. John may have had doubts as to whether Jesus was the one and only one to come.

3. John may have just wanted reassurance.

Are You the One?Luk 7:20-21 ESV And when the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, 'Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?'" (21) In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight.

Luk 7:22-23 ESV And he answered them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. (23) And blessed is the one who is not offended by me."

Tell What You Have SeenPerhaps John wanted a direct answer.

Mat 13:10-15 ESV Then the disciples came and said to him, "Why do you speak to them in parables?" (11) And he answered them, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. (12) For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. (13) This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. (14) Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: "'You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive. (15) For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.'

Mat 13:16-17 ESV But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. (17) For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

The prophet John would have recognized prophecy.

Mat 11:9-10 ESV What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. (10) This is he of whom it is written, "'Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.'

Tell What You Have SeenIsa 61:1 ESV The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the

LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

Luk 4:17-21 ESV And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, (18) "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, (19) to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." (20) And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. (21) And he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

Truly this was the Son of GodMat 14:33 ESV And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly

you are the Son of God."

Mat 27:50-54 ESV And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. (51) And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. (52) The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, (53) and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. (54) When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!"

Tell What you Have Heard

Mar 16:15-16 ESV And he said to them, "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. (16) Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
