Sivasailam Street misused for parking vehiclesSir, Thanks for publishing my letter on the woes of Sivasailam Street

residents two weeks back. It had a good impact and a week back,Chennai Corporation relaid the damaged portion of the road.

However, the construction debris dumped on the pavement has stillnot been removed. The carriageway is also blocked by cars in brokendown condition, a TNEB cable drum and unauthorised parking ofvehicles by outsiders and nearby vendors.

I hope immediate action is taken by the officials concerned to removethe debris and the other encroachments from the road, R.Chandrasekaran, Sivasailam Street, T. Nagar, Ph: 99415 66930

Withdrawals from ATMSir, This is to bring to your notice the difficulties and risks involved

in withdrawing cash from Automated Teller Machines.Nowadays, if anything is found scrawled on a note, no one accepts

it including banks. Banks accept it only if the person who had with-drawn the cash is able to prove that such a note was withdrawn froma particular ATM. To prove this they suggest that while withdrawingmoney, the customer should check all the notes and, if any note witha discrepancy (something written on the note) is found, he/she shoulddisplay the note in front of the camera in the ATM room and also hisface.

Thereafter, he /she should go to the branch and lodge a complaint. After comparing details with the CCTV camera footage, the bank mayexchange the note .It is another matter that CCTV cameras in mostATMs are not working and also that no security guard is present outsidemany ATMs.

This situation puts everyone, especially senior citizens, to greatdifficulty. Whenever one goes to withdraw money, there is always a longqueue and people waiting and lose their cool if one takes some time. Thus, verifying each and every note will consume time and also put thewithdrawer in danger of being watched from outside by unwantedelements.

According to me, the basics of banking is “Trust”. The customertrusts the banker. Thus, is it not the duty of the bank to ensure thatdefective notes are not loaded into ATM machines? This will reduce theunwanted stress on customers, especially senior citizens. Will the RBIand bank managements sort out this serious, recurring problem?

May I request banks to be more customer-friendly in this regard? V.R. Sridhar, Flat 4, Swathi Kanaka Flats, 23/11, Veerasami Street,West Mambalam. Ph: 98845 68963

NEET is beneficial to studentsSir, I don’t understand the reasons for the protests against National

Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in Tamilnadu both by somesections of the public and the political parties.

NEET is a mandatory all-India entrance examination conducted byCBSE for students who wish to seek admission to graduate/post-graduate medical courses in accredited private and govt. medicalcolleges in India.

NEET is a pan-India implementation, and exempting only Tamilnadufrom it is not legally feasible. Any such attempt by the State Govt. willbe struck down by the High Court and the Supreme Court. Theselection based on the NEET should continue as it is based on merit andbrings in transparency to the system. K. Vaidyanathan, GodsendApartments, 15/1, North Usman Road, T. Nagar, Ph: 2815 6891

Non-working signals, gaps in median pose dangerSir, The traffic signals at the Anna Main Road / P. T.Rajan Salai andAnna Main Road / R. K. Shanmugam Salai junctions are not working. Also, the wide gaps in the medians at these junctions are misused by

2-wheeler riders and autorickshaw and car drivers to take turns whichoften create traffic problems.

They also pose a serious danger to other vehicles and pedestrianscrossing these junctions. Will the authorities concerned take immedi-ate action to repair the signals and close the gaps in the medians?Traffic police should also take strict action against the traffic ruleoffenders. K. Balachander, K.K. Nagar

The Kothandaramar Templetank, West Mambalam wasrenovated two years back.

But this good work seems tohave been undone by miscre-ants.

“The company constructeda compound wall around thetank and also installed iron rodson the wall. Now, these rodsare either missing or damaged.Miscreants have vandalisedthe property and taken what-ever they could to sell for aprice,” said R. Thiagarajan, aresident of Arangappan Streetin West Mambalam and presi-dent of Mambalam Exnora In-novators Club.

He also pointed out that be-fore the onset of the North-East Monsoon, members of apolitical party de-silted thetank and planted saplingsaround it.

“But neither the local resi-dents nor the Corporationshowed any interest in theupkeep of the tank. People con-tinue to throw garbage into it.The tank has to be renovatedagain. Exnora is mooting theidea of creating a walkers’ patharound the tank,” said

Kothandaramar Temple tank returns toneglected state

Thiagarajan.Every year, there is water

crisis in West Mambalam dur-ing summer. Even when thetank has water, it is unable tocontribute towards resolvingthe water crisis.

“Until around 60 years ago,the water from the tank waspotable.

Not anymore. Besidesproper maintenance, mea-sures have to be taken to pu-rify the water and make it po-table,” said Thiagarajan.

The stretch surrounding thetank is muddy and littered withgarbage.

“The main roads —Eshwaran Kovil Road, Ellai

Amman Kovil Road, GovindanRoad and Kothanda RamarKovil Road — serve as ap-proach roads to four schools inthe locality.

These roads are busy andcongested, and often unsafe forchildren, especially when theyare riding bicycles. If thestretch around the tank is bi-tumen topped, it can serve asan alternative route. Childrenwho cycle or walk to school canuse this stretch.

The Corporation should con-sider the possibility of develop-ing it as a stretch dedicated tocyclists and pedestrians.

This will make a safe routefor children to reach their

schools. A few abandoned ve-hicles are also found aroundthe tank,” said Thiagarajan

“Exnora seekes to give a newlease of life to this tank andconvert it into a clean and beau-tiful leisure spot for residentsof the locality.

To make this possible, weseek the support and coopera-tion of residents and templeauthorities,” R. Govindarajan, secretary of the Club, said.
