learning and research in South-west Maharashtra. I am particularly happy because this University

has made a tremendous progress during the last fifty years and, as a result, the University is known at national and international level for research achievements.

Resently several steps have been taken to enhance teaching and research in order to focus on the emerging fields like Industrial Chemistry, Space Science, Bio-Chemistry, Biotechnology,

Bioinformatics, Sericulture, Computer Science, Engineering and Electronics. The Department of

Physics has been recently identified by the UGC as a Department of Special Assistance (DSA). Super

conductivity, Energy, Bio-technology, Agro-biotechnology are identified as new research areas. The

University has also established University-Industry Interaction Cell in three districts under its jurisdiction. Eight science departments, viz. Botany, Physics, Bio-Chemistry, Statistics, Zoology,

Geography, Mathematics and Chemistry have received grants under FIST from the DST. The efforts

of the University towards achieving academic excellence are reflected in the receipts of grants from various funding agencies like UGC, DST, DBT, CSIR, DRDO, DAE and the collaborations with other premier national and international institutes in the form of MoUs with Asian Institute of

Technology, Bangkok; University of Adelaide and Monash University, Australia; Sabargamuwa

& special hostel for them. The lush green and sprawling campus of our Shivaji University creates

an ideal atmosphere for ‘education in the lap of nature’ which, I hope, will be maintained properly by your disciplined behavior.

On this occassion, I hope that the budding researcher will follow the research ethics. University has recently subscribed plagarism detection tools such as " Turn-IT- In "just to ensure

the same. The University has also IPR cell and clearly defined IPR policy in place.
