In the first place,there were a large number of contracts let on Maui for railroads,ditches, reservoirs, etc., and the contractors olfered largo wages,thus securing many plantation laborers Secondly, planters insome of the other Islands offered larger wages than the Mauiplanters, thus taking much labor from Maui, notably to Hawaii.Either an univorsal combination must be effected, which will provealmost prohibitively difficult, or olse the supply of labor on theIslands materially increased, and the latter alternative will proba'.bly be chosen.

No more hopeful sign for the political future of the Islandscould have been manifested than the mutual understandingreached between the legislature and the executiverelativo to thepassage of an act relating to unpaid bills. "Certainly," was tho reply, fol-lowed by a roaring sound in the tele-phone, as though a thouso.nd voltcurrent had been turned on. Theroar gradually died away to a gen-tle murmur which sunk into silence,followed by another long and tire-some pause. At length however thefaint feminine, voice was-agai- n heard.

Elegant Passenger Coaches.

The Kahului Railroad Co. receivedfrom tho Coast, by the Flint, twolovely passenger coaches, mauufactured by the Convertible Car Co

of New York. These cars are each:57 feet long, and contain ten doubleand ten single seats. The seats arwicker work, mounted on springsand aro reversible. The wood workof the coaches Is polished oak anash and the interior finish is of beauful bird's eye maple.

These cars are tubular in struct"ure, and are ingenuously arrangedso as to be converted In a momentfrom open to enso cars, and viceversa, or one' side caii bo opened andthe other left closed. Even when

closed,' the windows are so arrangedas to give an unobstructed view.The two platforms of aach coach arevestibuled, makiug good observatorycars, and the ventilation Is perfect.Each coach is furnished with icewater and elegant lamps, but for ob-

vious reasons, the stove and coal boxof colder climates is omitted.
