Air-conditioning still off in underground metrostationsBy Our Staff Reporter

Though the water situation has improved, air-conditioning in the underground metrostations continues to remain switched off causing hardship to commuters.

Chennai Metro had taken the decision to switch off air-conditioning to save on water fivemonths back, when the city was facing a severe water crisis.

According to an official, these systems require large quantities of water to function.A regular commuter told this reporter (who had taken a ride from Ashok Nagar to Central

station) that waiting for more than five minutes in the underground station is suffocating, especially during the peak hours when there is a big crowd on the platforms. The commuterscrowd close to the wall mounted fans on these platforms to beat the heat and sweat.

“I often wait at the concourse and get down to the underground platform only a few minutesbefore the arrival of the train,” said a commuter.

The underground stations require 9,000 liters of water every day, of which 7,000 liters go intooperating the air-conditioners.

The commuters have appealed to Chennai Metro to switch on the air-conditioning in all theunderground metro stations.

Pedestrian plaza inaugurated.Pedestrian plaza inaugurated.By Our Staff Reporter

The evening of Nov. 13, sawT. Nagar’s Pondy Bazaar andBashyam Road turn festivewith fairy lights, music andgeneral festivities. Buildingsand trees glowed with lightsand pedestrians walked acrossthe swanky new pavements, even as music boomed acrossthe streets.

Chennai’s first pedestrianplaza under the Smart CityMission was inaugurated at thejunction between Pondy Ba-zaar and Bashyam Road byChief Minister Edappadi K.Palaniswami at 6 p.m, whenhe rang a bell at the junctionwhere the pedestrian plazawas constructed.

He also opened the 23 otherstreets, including KannadasanStreet, Raman Street andRamanujam Street, rede-signed at a cost of Rs. 19.11crores in Kodambakkam zone.

The inaugural event wasattended by D. Jayakumar(Fisheries Minister), S. P.Velumani (Municipal Admin-istration Minister), G. Prakash(Corporation Commissioner)and Harmander Singh (Princi-pal Secretary to Government).

After the inauguration, shopowners and their families, evening walkers, shoppers andresidents from the neighbour-hood poured onto the road tosavour the change.

Elsewhere on the broadpavements, there were enter-tainment artistes.

The ‘Tall Man’, as KalandarTameen Ansar called his lankypuppet creation with blue andwhite lacy strips of cloth, drewcrowds.

Arcus and his team of rap-pers and hip-hop artistes, allstudents from a popular engi-neering college in the city, en-thralled the crowd with theirmoves. Children were seen tak-ing joy rides in the battery-operated cars.

A social activist told this re-porter that persons with vi-sual impairment may have atough time negotiating the pe-destrian plaza. The pavementsdo not have tactile strips orsteel stubs that will help thevisually impaired navigate.Parts of the pavement havebeen lowered so that personusing wheelchairs can get onand off at these points. “Butapart from that, the plaza isnot disabled friendly,” he said.

“We only hope the Corpora-tion maintains the plaza,” saidanother walker.

The construction of the pe-destrian plaza began in 2018at a cost of Rs. 39.86 crores

and the smart pavements werebuilt for Rs. 19.11 crores. Theplaza will serve as a major cul-tural hub for both adults andchildren with music, dance andother activities to be hostedhere.

Smart pavements are thosewith benches, bollards at stra-tegic locations to stop two-wheelers from using ramps andpavements and ramps for per-

sons with disabilities. TheChennai Corporation has built‘zero’ obstruction pavementsfor pedestrians, and CCTVcameras are being set up nearthe footpaths as well.

While certain stretcheshave undergone a facelift withmurals painted near the divi-sional unit of ChennaiMetrowater, smart bikes havebeen set up near Panagal Park.

However, the plaza is said tohave caused major parkingwoes as shoppers leave theircars nearby despite it being ano parking zone. While parkinghas now been pushed to theside roads, CCTV cameras willcontinuously monitor illegallyparked vehicles.

The following traffic diver-sions have been implementedsince Nov. 14:

Vehicles proceeding onThyagaraya Road from AnnaSalai are diverted at theThanikachalam Road junction. The vehicles from Anna Salaito Panagal Park have to takea left at the same junction andreach Panagal Park viaVenkatanarayana Road.

Chennai will soon see similarplazas in Anna Nagar,Thiruvanmiyur, Velachery andGeorge Town.

Here are pictures of theswanky new plaza:

Proposal for Thirukkural verses on milk sachetsmeaningless

Sir, Following the demand made by a political party that the StateGovt. print Thirukkural couplets on Aavin milk packets, the Ministerfor Dairy Development and Milk Products is reported to have statedthat he is seeking the CM’s permission to implement the same.

Leaving aside what had prompted such a demand, while it will be wiseto propagate Thirukkural through various means, one feels that thedemand to print the same on milk sachets does not make sense.

Firstly, the packets will be dispensed with once the milk is emptied.Secondly, the empty packets cannot be preserved even for a day.Thirdly, it will not have the desired impact if that were to be the motivebehind the exercise. The demand is further unnecessary as thegovernment is considering replacement of plastic covers for supply ofmilk following the ban on plastic.

Instead, the government can use Aavin kiosks, parks and such otherpublic places to popularise Thirukkural. V S Jayaraman, 31 MotilalStreet, T. Nagar.

Shifting sub-registrar offices to Nolambur bad moveSir, Citizens Guardians (Old No. 2, 1st Floor, Bank of India Colony,

near 8th Avenue, Ashok Nagar) appeals against the govt.’s proposal toshift the local sub-registrar offices to a central location in Nolambur(Mogappair). Registration of documents, which is an essential service, should be located within 1 to 3 km. of each locality for the convenienceof the residents and not centralized in a far-off location.

Also, our members visited the facility at Nolambur and found thatit lacks infrastructure and will create hardship for visitors. Also, thereis lack of parking facility which is going to become another big problem.Citizens Guardian, Bank of India Colony, Ashok Nagar

Protest outside Metrowater office over erratic water supplySir, A number of residents of Postal Colony 1st Street and

Kamatchipuram1st Street gathered before Metrowater Office andCorporation Office in Thambiah Road to protest against the inactionof the authorities in rectifying the erratic water supply problem in theirstreets.

They also raised the demand to install speedbreakers at the junctionof Postal Colony 1stStreet and Gopalan Street, near Vinayagar Temple,to slow down vehicles and for the safety of pedestrians crossing thejunction. Ramanathan, 27, Postal Colony 1st Street, WestMambalam, Ph: 94449 46958

Student unions in colleges breed anti-social activitiesSir, In earlier days, student unions served an important purpose in

colleges like organising educational events, lectures, sports events andother programs to benefit the student community. It also helped ininculcating leadership qualities and communication skills.

But in recent times, such unions in a number of colleges have becomea source for anti-social elements and political organisations to corruptthe minds of the students and act as their office-bearers. Often, we getto hear of fruitless agitations, clashes between students of differentcolleges instigated by the unions and outsiders for personal gain.

The students who become part of these unions often lag behind instudies or pursue anti-social activities to make ends meet after gettingout of college.

The college managements should ensure that student unions areformed only with the sole purpose of furthering the educational needsof the students and not as power centers. K. Vaidyanathan, 15/1,North Usman Road, T. Nagar, Ph: 2815 6891, 98907 79339

Seshan’s death an irreparable lossSir, Magsasay Award winner and former Chief Election Commis-

sioner T. N. Seshan passed away on Nov. 10.His death is an irreparable loss to the nation.Albeit his defeat in the Gandhi Nagar Parliamentary and later in

Presidential Election, he was recognised as a straightforward personand had stood for clean and corrupt-free governance.

As Chief Election Commissioner, he introduced a number of path-breaking reforms to enable free and fair elections.

I had the opportunity to meet him after his retirement when he cameto preside over a function in BVB, Mylapore. N. Vijayaraghavan, 59/1, Muthalamman Koil St. West Mambalam, Ph: 99626 64766

Water supply erratic in parts of Ashok NagarSir, The supply of piped water by Metrowater is inadequate for houses

in parts of Ashok Nagar, including 85th Street where I live. The water supply, which was round the clock earlier, has been

restricted to a mere half-an-hour in the morning on alternate days. When the residents complained, they did not get any favourable

response from the Metrowater officials. It is surprising that when Metrowater is announcing through the

media that the water supply situation has improved after the recentspell of heavy rains, we continue to suffer and are still forced to buywater through tankers to manage our needs.

I am afraid if the water supply is not up to the mark even during themonsoon, what would be the condition during the ensuing summer?

I request the authorities concerned to look into the matter andenhance the duration/quantity of water supply to our street. A.Jainulabdeen, 51, 85th Street, Ashok Nagar, Ph: 94444 19083
