Rangan Street residents suffer from noise pollutionSir, Residents of Rangan Street, T. Nagar are harried by

the heavy din from the ongoing construction work in apopular jewellery showroom for the past two years.

The tranquility has been disrupted by the blaring sound oftile cutters, concrete breakers and drills used in the renovationof the showroom. There are a number of senior citizens livingon the street. The windows are always kept shut to reduce theeffect of the ear shattering noise. The nightmare starts earlyin the morning and reduces only late in the evening. Myneighbor’s wife suffering from Parkinson’s disease finds itvery difficult to tolerate the noise and her condition isworsening.

The Residents’ Welfare Association has lodged severalcomplaints with the authorities concerned but no action isbeing taken. I have also approached the Tamilnadu PollutionControl Board (TNPCB), which directed my complaint to thecorporation, which further referred it to the zonal office fromwhere I haven’t received a reply. Appeal to ply more white board busesSir, MTC has drastically reduced the number of white

board buses that have the lowest minimum fare of Rs. 3 in thecity. Instead, mostly express and deluxe buses are only plyingand have minimum fares of Rs. 5 and is Rs. 7 respectively.

It is affecting the commuters from the lower income stratawho are heavily dependent on MTC buses for their dailytransport needs. To cite an example, my servant maid has toshell out Rs. 360 per month to commute to work for the shortdistance from Ashok Pillar to Sivan Park, K. K. Nagar. Byreducing the frequency and the number of white board buses,MTC has indirectly increased fares affecting the livelihoodof many. Sir, The police assistancebooth in Mambalam Rail-way Station Road, WestMambalam, close to the sta-tion is ill-maintained andlooks abandoned. Thewords ‘Police’ and ‘Assist’ inthe sticker stuck on thebooth have faded and are nolonger legible. The stickerinstead reads as ‘ChennaiCity Stance’ and I wonder ifthe police department hastaken a stance to let thebooth remain as it is. 71st Street, 11th Sector, K. K. Nagar.The road has remained in a bad condition for over 3 years

and no steps have been taken by the Corporation to relay itin spite of several reminders. The other roads in the areahave been re-laid, especially after last year’s floods and arein good condition. This road is more popular with motoriststo avoid the traffic in Ponnambalam Salai. Residents of thestreet are also badly affected as it has become a dust bowl.

K. K. Nagar 7th Sector Residents’ Welfare Association hasinstalled a gate at the junction of 33rd Street and AlagirisamySalai for added security. K. S. Rajan (Secretary) said that gatesare also being installed at the junctions of 37th and 38th Street.

He told Mambalam Times that the gates will remain closedfrom 10 p.m to 6 a.m. Security personnel have been employedto man the gates, he added.

“Only 7th Sector residents will be allowed and visitors will bepermitted only after making proper enquiries”, he said.

“It will increase security and prevent misuse of parking byoutsiders”, he added.
