In his own words, Shawn explains each tune!

Shawn Mendes is baring his soul on his debut album, Handwrit-ten, and even better: He’s telling M Girls the secret story behind the lyrics. “Every single song has a special place in my

heart,” he tells M. “It feels like I’m releasing a part of myself to fans!”

Breakups are never easy — even for boys! “This song is basically about a rough time during a relationship,” Shawn explains to M exclusively. “It’s

about a breakup and how rough it feels afterwards.”

Shawn wanted to write a song about how happy love makes him feel. “It’s a good-feeling song!” he shares. “Being in

love makes you feel like a child.”

Shawn’s most excited to play this tune! “It’s wanting the strings attached [in a relationship] and all the great things about having the

strings attached,” he tells M.

In this one, Shawn talks about wanting more out of a friendship. “It’s about trying to find ‘the one’ and that the whole time, she’s been in front of me as a friend and I never

thought of her that way,” he explains.

Just as the title suggests, Shawn penned this jam about his dream girl. “This is about the girl of my dreams and pretending that we came together in this whole dream type of thing!” he confides to us.

Shawn admits that this is the angriest song on the album. “I’m never going to go back to our relationship af-ter what [a girl’s] done to me because [she] burnt it to the ground,” he says. “I don’t think [she] realizes it’s gone.”

Aww — Shawn wrote this song about having to be away from his family all of the time. “It’s saying

that one day, my life will slow down and it won’t be so crazy and I promise I’ll be here — just wait

for me,” he confesses to M.

Ever regret not talking to someone you like? Shawn has! “To say it simply, this is about the one who got away,” he says. “I didn’t even catch her name and now my life is flipped around over it.”

Workout equipment! “If I don’t have access to a gym, I’ll go crazy!” he laughs to us. Got it!

A long board!“So I can go off and breathe for a few minutes of the day!” he explains.

Good food! “I’ll flip out if I have to eat McDonald’s every night!” he admits.

Breaking up with someone can leave a bad taste in your mouth. “This is how I feel after [a girl] left me and the

aftertaste I have,” he explains.
