President's MessageThanks again to Bettie Gulacsik for coordinating our March program on water in Collier .County. Mike Slayton gave us some good mformation on the need to conserve water andsome ways to do so.

Following the defeat of the ChUdren's Services Council Referendum on March 10th, wecalled Council Chairperson Bea Harper. Always a tireless advocate for the kids in CollierCounty, Bea is understandably disappointedthat there was not sufficient support for directfunding for programs for children. On the otherhand, she feels that the efforts were worth it ifsome of the community was alerted to unmetneeds. The future of the Council? That will bedecided at their next meeting on April 3rd at 9a.m. at the School Board Meeting Room. A lotwill depend on future funding sources to helpcoordinate the activities of the volunteer Council members. Meanwhile, our consciousness israised!

LWVUS asks that we convey their regrets thatsome members received letters asking them tojoin the League. The mailing was intended forLeague donors who were not members. Individual letters of apology were sent out byLWVUS President Susan Ledennan.

Check out the Spring issue of the Florida Voterfor a "Spotlight" column on our Know YourCounty Government Teen Citizenship Program. LWVCC chaired the program for thepast three years and received a nice plaque inacknowledgement of our work from ~o-sponsor

Collier County 4H. We appreciated It!

Please schedule yourself to attend our AnnualMeeting at 10:30 on Monday, April 20th! Ourproposed program, submitted by your commit:tee reresentatives and approved by the Board, ISon pages 3-6. Please bring it with you. We'llvote on the budget and slate ofofficers as wellas the program. A special treat will be the presentation by Florida League's natural resoUICesguru, Sue Dudley. See you there!

About the program ...Our April speaker, Sue Dudley, is Natural Resources Director, League ofWomen Voters of Florida, and holds the portfolio of Growth Management!Natural Resources Chair.

The Collier County League's International Relations Committee is completing a study on oil dependency and energy choices and has invited Mrs.Dudley to address the League. Her topic is "Energy Will Shape Our Fume." The Committee believes with the LWVUS that global environmentaldegradation impacts on U.S. relations with othernations, and that we "must adopt domestic policieswhich facilitate the solution of internationalproblems."

Under the Chainnanship of Mrs. Dudley, LWVFhas sponsored several conferences in conjunctionwith other organizations. The most recent was the"Global Warming Leadership Forum: Public Policyand the Greenhouse Effect" with Florida State University and Citizens.. to Preserve Florida.

Mrs. Dudley is also president of the EnvironmentalConfederation of Southwest Florida and a memberof the Review Committee for the Florida AdvisoryCouncil on Environmental Education.

She writes, "We moved to Florida from Los Angeles in 1979. Prior to that, as an Air F~rce pilo~'sfamily, we lived all over the place. My mterest mwater and coastal issues stems from our years onNewfoundland and Okinawa."
