Franklin County Chamber Roaring 20’s Casino Night date is confirmed: Hold February 18, 2017

Josh Cole, Project Manager at the Co-op provided a second tour of the expansion. It is amazing! Josh commented, “We are on track for the end of September for the soft opening. The Grand Opening is scheduled for October “Celebrating 70 Years”. The excitement is building and we promise not to disappoint, Franklin County will be proud of our new Co-op.” The anticipated Grand Opening is Saturday, October 22nd. Ribbon Cutting is Friday, October 21st!

Time to carve pumpkins, drink apple cider and take

long walks in the crisp cool weather of fall. Especially when the

leaves begin to fall! We are fortunate to live in Tennessee

where we have all four beautiful seasons.

October is an extremely busy month for our Chamber.

The first week of October we have three major events. October

3rd is the 3rd Annual Sewanee Golf Classic at the Course in

Sewanee. October 5th is our second session for Leadership

Franklin County, Agriculture Day and the first week of October is

Tennessee Manufacturing Week. On October 6th we will

celebrate manufacturing week by placing 434 juniors at the

following locations listed below.

CST Storage Inc., HiTech Mold & Engineering, S.E. Inc., Baxter Enterprises, National Aerospace

Solutions (AEDC), Nissan North

America, Decherd, Infiniti, Tennessee National Guard Armory, Thompson Appalachian Hardwoods, Zanini Tennessee, Inc., Woodall Grain Company & Motlow State Community College. This event is a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of

manufacturers.

On September 15th, Zanini Tennessee Inc. received

the “Challenging Spirit Award” from Honda for their support

during the critical launch of the Honda Civic Bi-color wheel

Cover. The “Challenging Spirit Award” is to recognize suppliers

who went above and beyond to support Honda. Receiving the

award was Javier Burunat, Plant Site Manger and Drew Urban,

Zanini North American Operations Director. I was honored to

be invited to represent our Chamber at the ceremony with the

entire Zanini Team.

Outstanding Citizen for 2016 should be submitted in essay

format to the Franklin County Chamber, describing why you

feel the individual is deserving of the prestigious award.

Simply submit a resume on the individual you would like to

nominate. An Outstanding Citizen is someone who has

brought recognition to Franklin County throughout the state

or county; a person that has contributed freely in time,

effort or expense whether paid or voluntary to the Chamber,

county, cities, church etc. All Nominations for Outstanding

Citizens must be submitted by November 11th in written

format, mailed to P.O. Box 280, Winchester, TN or dropped

by the Chamber.

Physician Joins Local

Medical Practice Southern Tennessee Reginal

Health System has announced that

Michelle S. Val, MD is joining its

staff and will be offering family

medicine services to patients in

the Franklin and Grundy County

area. Dr. Val brings a number of

years of clinical experience and

work experience in the military

health system to Southern

Tennessee Regional Health

System (STRHS) and is one of

many new physicians to join the

hospital’s medical staff.

“We are fortunate to have Dr. Val

joining our medical team, “ said

Rob Followell, hospital CEO.

“Her experience as a family

practice physician along with her

clinic management knowledge will

enhance the growth of primary

care coverage in the area. The

expansion of providers at the

Mountain Medical Clinic is

confirmation of our commitment

to making communities healthier.”

Dr. Val joins Mountain Medical

Clinic from the Joel Health Clinic

at Womack Army Medical

Center, Fort Bragg, North

Carolina, where she was officer in

charge. She was responsible for

the overall leadership of a fifteen

provider primary care clinic,

which provided acute care,

chronic care, preventive services

and minor procedures, and more.

Dr. Val also worked at Reynolds

Army Community Hospital in Ft.

Sill, Oklahoma for a number of

years in family medicine as a

physician and in leadership roles.

Val was awarded a Bronze Star

for her service in Joint Base Balad,

Iraq. She served one year as

Brigade Surgeon for the 555

Engineer Brigade where she was

responsible for medical readiness,

as well as acute and chronic

medical care, of a deployed

Engineer Brigade.

Services provided will cover a

wide spectrum of standard

practices for a family physician

including well child care, along

with immunizations and school

phys i c a l s , d ia gnost i c and

preventive screenings, acute

illnesses and injuries for all ages,

management of chronic medical

conditions, and minor procedures

such as skin biopsies, cyst

removal, repair of lacerations, and

more. Dr. Val provides women’s

healthcare including breast and

pelvic exams, pap smears and

contraceptive management which

will broaden the scope of services

available at the clinic.

United States Military Academy at

West Point, New York and

received her medical degree from

Temple University of School of

Medicine. She completed her

internship and residency in family

medicine at B. Martin Army

Community Hospital in Fort

Benning, Georgia. She is a

member of the American

Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Val will begin seeing patients

at Mountain Medical Clinic located

on First Street in Monteagle on

November 1. For additional

Dr. Gerald “Jerry” Smith dazzled students with his guided walking tour of the campus of Sewanee The University of

the South. Dr. Smith’s presentation and remarkable knowledge of Franklin County History kept everyone captivated

and left us with a desire to learn more about the history of our community. All Saints’ Chapel on University Avenue

has an interior height of 51 feet and length of 233 feet. Stained-glass windows depict biblical scenes and events in the

university’s history.

Delicious pancakes at Sunrise “The Breakfast Place” owner Demi Summers was a fantastic start to the first session for the Class of

2017. AM Rotary Club President, Brad Shapiro, Garrett Orr, DDS, Dr. Alan Clark, John Shelton and other members sponsored

breakfast and presented, “Leadership Qualities and Styles” establishing a strong foundation for the class of 2017.

LFC Alumni were provided a guided tour of Sewanee Inn by a University Student. Dave Van Buskirk facilitator, Dr.

Jerry Smith host for the day, Judy Taylor, Tom Shemwick LFC Facilitators and the entire class enjoyed the tour.

Dr. Amie Lonas, Director of Franklin County Schools

provided the history and forecast the future of Franklin County School System.

Professor Peter Smith presented a history of the Tennessee Williams Theatre. Tennessee Williams, American playwright and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner generously left the gift of his estate to the University of the South in 1996 providing funds for the theatre.

A theater student, Dr. Peter Smith and Professor Dan Backlund provide a tour and in-depth presentation on the Tennessee Williams Theatre. They explained components involved in becoming an actor, directing and creating a play. It was amazing to see what is involved in all aspects of the theatre.
