Comparison of 7 different 5µ reversed phase columns. Thissurvey measures the degree of silanol activity on the surfaceof each silica. In this survey, Luna 5µ C18(2) material demon-strates the lowest silanol activity.

One of the most popular HPLC columnsworldwide• pH stability from 1.5 to 10.0* for over 1000 hours• Extensive batch traceability data provided with

every 3µ and 5µ column• Extreme versatility of 3, 5, 10, 10-PREP and 15µ particles

and bulk material availability• Phases available include: Si, C5, C8, C18,

Phenyl-Hexyl, CN, NH2 and SCX

LUNA®

Remarkable Silica Technology

Luna’s base sil ica is manufactured to extremely tight toler-ances. Not only is it 99.999% ultrapure, but it has excellentsurface smoothness and sphericity. The structural stabil ityof individual sil ica particles and stabil ity of the column bedare enhanced by improved sil ica smoothness. The strengthof Luna sil ica reduces the likelihood of particle sheering andbreakage during bonding and everyday column use, thusreducing the number of “fines”, lowering backpressure, andlengthening column life.

Dense Uniform Bonding

Luna columns employ bonding technology that provides ex-tremely high surface coverage not only through high-bondingdensities, but also controlled bonding uniformity. This highdegree of uniformity forms a more inert “hydrophobic shield”around the underlying silica. The result is a pH stable, repro-ducible bonding with virtually no silanol activity.

Scale-up Diversity

Luna is available in 3, 5, 10, 10-PREP and 15µ particle sizesas packed columns or bulk media for fast, simple scale up.Your methods will have scale-up flexibility without the need toredevelop on another sorbent.

Quality Proven

Extensive testing and quality control test data is shownon the Materials Validation Document (MVD) that accom-panies each 3 and 5µ Luna column. Over 25 individualchemical and physical testes are performed and docu-mented on the MVD, including:

• Particle Analysis- Particle Size- Pore Diameter- Particle Size Distribution- Surface Area

• Total Metal Content• Bonded Phase Coverage

- Total Carbon- Surface Coverage

• Diagnostic Chromatography Test- Inertness- Metal Sensitivity- Hydrophobic Index

• Performance Chromatography Test- Basic Drug Standards- Longevity Tests (pH Stability)- Scanning Electron Microscopy (measures

surface smoothness and particle shape)

Wide pH Stability

Luna’s 1.5 to 10 pH stability** is a result of manufacturing highpurity silica that is nearly free of metal contaminates. Metalcontaminants hinder maximum bonded phase coverage of thesilica surface, which is necessary for achieving a broad pHstability range. Our bonding technology ensures the bondedphase coverage is extraordinarily dense creating a “hydropho-bic shield” around the silica.

AMINO (NH2)Luna Amino (NH2) was developed to improve column rugged-ness and reproducibility. What results is a unique amino, stablefrom pH 1.5 to 11.0, in 100% aqueous mobile phases, and inreversed and normal phases. For mono- and oligosaccharideanalysis or for any normal phase separation Luna Amino is anexcellent choice.

CYANO (CN)Luna CN shows remarkable performance and reproducibility.Luna’s revolutionary base silica has exceptional surface smooth-ness and consistency and minimizes variations during the bond-ing process. The result is a CN phase with excellent performanceand reproducibility batch-to-batch and column-to-column.

Luna Bonded Phase Selectivity ChartDescription Application

C5 5, 10µA reversed-phase chemistry that offers greater hydrolytic stability and Highly hydrophobic compounds. Good alternative to C8 or C18 whenalternative selectivity over the classic C4 phase. less retention is desired.

C8(2) 3, 5, 10, 10-PREP, 15µC8 phase for excellent efficiency, peak shape and resolution. Significantly Great starting point for methods development of pharmaceuticals, improved performance over traditional C8 phases due to high surface nucleotides and polar compounds. Excellent for highly aqueous andcoverage. Slightly lower carbon load than original Luna C8. LC/MS applications.

C8 5, 10µOriginal Luna C8 phase. Highly retentive C8 optimized for long lifetimes at A “workhorse” for extremely high pH applications, or when a moreextremely high pH levels. retentive C8 is desired.

C18(2) 3, 5, 10, 10-PREP,15µC18 phase. Excellent efficiency, peak shape and resolution. Slightly lower A C18 phase for virtually all HPLC applications. Range of particle sizescarbon load than original Luna C18. offers amazing versatility for capillary and LC/MS, to prep and

process scale applications. Our No.1 recommended choice for HPLCmethod development.

C18 5, 10µOriginal Luna C18 phase. Very high retention, optimized for long lifetimes at A “workhorse” for extremely high pH applications, or when longerextremely high pH levels. retention is desired.

Phenyl-Hexyl 3, 5, 10, 10-PREP,15µA (patented) phenyl phase which employs a hexyl alkyl linker as opposed to Remarkable selectivity for aromatic compounds. Offers selectivitythe traditional propyl chain. Offers great stability as well as alternative advantages of both a phenyl phase and a C6 or C8 alkyl phase. Stable, selectivity. reproducible alternative to traditional phenyl phases. Also very good

for amine and polar compound selectivity.CN 3, 5, 10µ

Cyano phase. Can be used as reversed- or normal-phase material. The use of Excellent for improving the retention of polar compounds. ExtremelyLuna base silica results in overall phase reproducibility and performance. rapid equilibration makes it very good for rapid screening and gradient

applications. Exceptional normal phase performance.NH

23, 5, 10µAmino Phase. Can be used in reversed or normal phase modes. Stable from Excellent for sugar analysis or anionic compounds by reversed phasepH 1.5 to 11.0 and under 100% aqueous conditions. High performance silica chromatography and for compounds capable of hydrogen bondingand bonding techniques produces a rugged, highly reproducible column. under normal phase conditions.

SCX 5, 10µA Benzene Sulfonic Acid bonded phase is used to make this Strong Cation Excellent for cationic and nitrogen containing analytes such as coughExchange (SCX) column. Offers great peak shape and resolution. and cold compounds, codeine and morphine alkaloids, and drugs of

abuse. Also useful for 2-dimension chromatography (SCX-RP-MS-MS)of small peptides and protein digests.

METHODDEVELOPMENTLuna Method Development Kits combine the excellent perfor-mance of Luna HPLC columns with either 3 or 5 different se-lectivities. The column kits include a Luna Phenyl-Hexyl (mod-erate polarity) and your choice of a Luna CN (polar) or a C8(2)or C18(2) (non-polars).

METHODVALIDATION KITSThree columns of the same phase from three different batchesprovide an excellent benchmark for method validation. Methodreproducibility is easily and quickly assessed, clearly demon-strating chromatographic performance validation potential andlong term compliance with Luna Method Validation Kits.

COMBI-HTS™ HIGH-THROUGHPUTSCREENING COLUMNSNew, 21.2mm and 30mm ID columns provide exceptional loadability and durabilityfor high-throughput purifications. Luna Combi-HTS columns utilize the same Lunamaterial, but undergo additional QC at higher flow rates to ensure excellent perfor-mance under high pressure and high flow conditions.
