WATER UPDATE!Last month you were updated as to the state of our water

system (Hetch Hetchy). We had a couple of very good rain storms in February that were 120% above the precipitation average for February but the total average for the “water year” is only 40% of normal. Another 6.5 inches of rain is needed to fill Hetch Hetchy; there is only a 65% probability of this occurring before July 1. As of this writing, the voluntary 10% reduction requested by SFPUC remains in effect.

Since the January request, a reduction of 12% was observed throughout the SFPUC system, I’m sure Brisbanians did their part. The total SFPUC storage is at 69% of maximum (1% less than last month), but not all of that water is directly available (some is used for hydropower and in-stream releases).

Continued conservation, especially including reduced irrigation for turf, is important to mitigate or avoid the need for mandatory reductions this summer.

Here again are websites that you can check out for water conservation tips:

Staff was “quick on the draw” removing the temporary trailers at the fire house! By the time the last article went to print regarding the March/April time frame on the removal of the temporary trailers they were removed! Wow, that was quick, some things do move fast in government, just not very many! Good job Public Works Staff and Deputy Chief Pannaci!

Temporary reassignment: The City Manager of Half Moon Bay retired and the Half Moon Bay City Council interviewed some interim replacements, one of which was our very own Finance Director, Stuart Schillinger.

Stuart got the winning nod. Stuart did not put in for the position, he was asked if he would interview for it, this was due in part to the outstanding work that Stuart had performed for the City of Half Moon Bay when they were experiencing financial difficulty. Stuart will be here in Brisbane on Wednesday’s only. His current duties in Brisbane, which are many, will be divided temporarily between existing staff.

THINK BRISBANE — PLAY LOCALLY!

CONNECTIONS ARE INVALUABLE

As we reach the end of March our students are preparing for the last quarter of the school year. The

Brisbane Chamber has had a long and beneficial relationship with both the Brisbane and Jefferson Union School Districts and we partner with them to sponsor a number of annual programs geared to the success of our local students.

In mid-April local businesses in Brisbane, S a n F r a n c i s c o a n d S o u t h S a n F r a n c i s c o participate in our annual “Students in Business and Government Day” where each of the 8th grade students at Lipman Middle Schoo l have an o p p o r t u n i t y t o v i s i t bus inesses and gove rnment agencies to learn what it is like to be employed in industries such as fashion design, foodservice products, biotech, finance, television production, engineering, recycling –waste management and others. Students also can visit departments within the Brisbane government to see what it is like to work in Law Enforcement, Fire Safety, Finance, Human Resources and Planning. In May, the students will present their findings at a luncheon at the Mission Blue center where they will also hone their public speaking and presentation skills. It is a great program and gives the students valuable input as they start to decide the path they will choose in their future education.

For our local high school seniors, spring brings our “Scholarship Recognition Award Program.” Open to high school seniors, who live in Brisbane (or whose parent are employed by a Brisbane Chamber-member company), this program gives students the opportunity to apply and be interviewed for a Brisbane Chamber Scholarship Recognition Award. These annual awards are

funded by contributions from the members of the chamber, as well as individuals and others within the Brisbane community. 100% of all scholarship award contributions are distributed to the students. Now in its 19th year, the program has awarded over $200,000 to local students.

It’s not too late to make a donation to this important and rewarding program; Contact us at the Chamber for more information, or simply

drop a check in the mail (made out to the “Brisbane Chamber of Commerce”).

A plug for the local scene…experiencing “live music and theatre” is something that helps to enrich our lives and of those around us. We are fortunate that in our small town there are many opportunities to see performances, from

plays at Lipman School, Concerts in the Park, bands at the 23 Club and 7 Mile House, and the locally run series, “Live at Mission Blue.” I recently attended the performance of the Cypress String Quartet at the Mission Blue Center and was struck with not only the impressive acoustics of the center, but of the intimacy of the venue. Even with a “sold out” group of 120+ people in the audience it really felt as though the quartet was playing in your living (or drawing) room, with no need for a pumped up sound system. It’s one of those things that make Brisbane special, and with the plethora of thespians, musicians, photographers, painters, poets, writers and other artists that we are fortunate to have in our small “universe” there is always something in the “local scene” to stimulate us. How fortunate we are.

I a sked wha t t ype o f massages they offer. Jasmine showed me the rooms and stations for foot massage. Ben stated, “We offer deep-tissue massages to disentangle muscle knots and improve a person’s range of motion. It’s important to provide deep

FOCUS ON BRISBANEby Mark Melbye, Kidder Mathews

Commercial Real EstateThe Brisbane industrial market consists

of 5,319,000 square feet of product. There is currently only an 8% vacancy rate which is considerably lower than this time last year. The past year has shown a renewed interest in the leasing market and the market is recovering nicely.

I would like to welcome Del Monte Meat Company, f o u n d e d i n 1 9 2 6 i n S a n F r a n c i s c o , t o t h e neighborhood. Del Monte Meat Company moved into the previous home of Silk

Botanica located at 145 South Hill Drive. Del Monte has converted the 50,753 sq ft building into a state of the art food processing facility. This location is a nice addition to their other locations in Napa, Oakland, Sacramento and Monterey.

It is with great sadness we said good bye to William Dennis Spencer of F.W. Spencer and Son, Inc. a family owned Brisbane Mechanical Contracting Company established in 1903. William was a great business man as well as a great family man. Mr. Spencer was very active in the Brisbane warehouse market as well as the Brisbane community.

Through the years William always had the finest work ethic. He considered his employees as team members. He respected and valued all that they did. The results are seen in the successful completion of several projects throughout the Bay Area. One of William’s recent projects included the new San Francisco 49ers Stadium. His presence in this community will be greatly missed.

With the loss of a few major sales tax revenue generators in the last few years, Brisbane is exploring every possibility to ensure its long-term financial future without placing an undue burden on residents or employees. On page 1 of the Luminary and above is a summary of UPC’s 10 year aggregate and 2013 contributions to Brisbane’s General Fund Revenue.

UPC’s fiscal year 2013 accounts for roughly 13% of the city’s anticipated 2013/14 General Fund revenues through property taxes, truck haul fees and other sources - about $1.6 million. To put this in perspective, this amount is roughly twice the annual amounts allocated to the Building and Planning Departments.

future uses for the Brisbane Baylands Site with certainty, we do anticipate a substantial increase in revenue to the City’s General Fund and the creation of major new employment opportunities within the City of Brisbane.”
