University of Melbourne Unearthing, Information & History Centre, Herring Island
This building will house and engage the public visiting herring island in order to impress upon them four sites of memory relevant to the site.
This building will exhibit the recent history of the island, its geological history, its colonial past and the living environment, through a conceptually generated building form. The building wishes to expound upon the modern dilema of perceiving history and hence living in the present. The forces of acceleration, rapid slippage, displaced remnants, rupture and collapse, act to atomize history.
We can no longer look at history as one seemless narrative, instead it is a fragmented journey ruptured by events and coalesced into sites of memory. Our connection with the past is tentative and individualised. In order to re-affirm our understanding of the past we must look at it from this new vantage point, expressed physically by this building.

Ray Lawlers plays are an important device for exploring the reality of 1950s Melbourne and Australia. His play set in Carlton portraits national archetypes of what it means to work, play , love and grow old. Nothing is more powerful than a mirrored truth of everyday life enlaquered with nostalgia and the denialistic enshrinement of youth and strength. Summer of the Seventeenth Doll captured the 1950s in its mirage of characatures and the underlying beliefs, and narratives of a nation.Contemporary adaptions of the play and the architecture enclosing it should remodel itself to decrease that distance between hard reality and the current nostalgic national identity.
Our reality is set in a sprawling metropolis of suburban brick houses. Our lives have become more open with the digital age but our social spaces have shrunk and become akward space. We no longer air our dirty laundry, we no longer inhabit overlapping and shared living spaces. We have crawled back defensively into our solid and respectable fortresses. We have squared ourselves away so that at least some part of our lives can be controlled.
Architecture is theatre. The Doll House will explore the potential of primary shapes and functional opportunities to construct a brick faced space that challenges self imposed spatial regression; that has become our reality.

The Beating Heart of SunshineSunshine Plaza Extensionhow the building works:
Any new building or public works must indicate and inspire change. At this time in history it should be a crime to shape the built environment without vision. We must engage with the real world and the op-portunities presented by the challenge of sus-tainability. It is The Mission that will completely reshape the way we live and imagine our relation-ship with the environment.
Shopping Centres occupy crucial territory in our public domain and must take on the role as the unofficial public plaza from which culture and invention can be cultivated. The historic image of the Shopping Centre as a vast, enclosed concrete fortress surrounded by car parks, has become the symbol of many ills within our culture. The goal of this project was to open up the concrete box, and redefine the territory of the Sunshine Plaza shopping centre.
A new ground level program is envisaged based on effective public space, knitted together by a retail offer based on small scale food stalls. The incubator food stalls will focus on excellence in cuisine and sourcing local produce from urban agriculture. Existing core tenants will be sup-ported and the retail mix re-aligned towards food and health services.
Going up to level one, the development will be made financially viable through the integration of the Brimbank Council offices into one unified and inspiring space. Through overlapping space and visual connections between the levels a culture of transparency will be grown. this will help re-invigorate the institution of local government to become a driver of community growth and innova-tion. The development will be scaled down to fit into its surrounding urban context, and will be capped with a publically accessible green roof that ex-tends over approximately three quarters of the building footprint.
The remainder of the site provides an opportunity for two levels of affordable apartments to be built, that will encourage reduced carbon inten-sive habits and a more socially connected life style. The entire building will then be encapsulat-ed via a green scaffold system that introduces a platform for urban agriculture and also adds to the buildings energy performance and habitability.
Legend of Key Bui lding Parts
Appropriate scale-the 2 storey main street frontage aims at appropriately sizing the ex-pansion to its potential future surroundings. being potential 6 storey apartments.
1
Building as a Propaganda Machine-the face of the building strongly represents a shift in community ideas, and challenges the embedded processes of commercialised space
2
Liberated public space-as much as possible of the entire building perimeter is made more permeable to citizens. the ground plane is given over to democratic activities and community interaction, enhancing the sense of place.
3
Open building concept-using the ideas of the open building concept, the devel-opment incorporates a durable frame, modular design rules and flexible services
5
Rolling development-due to a crisis in capital the community must rely on increas-ing numbers of partnerships between government and private business. this project is a model that makes money for pri-vate investors but also provides infrastructure to the com-munity at a lower risk to governement finances
food and urban agriculture-the sunshine plaza has the opportunity to become a food and entertainment destination in the west. urban agriculture can support a vibrant local food production and job network
7
good public space-working upon the ideas of william whyte. the plaza should incorporate more spaces for people to sit and look at people. space is theatrical.
8 transparency, transitions and mixing space-the local council offices on level one should grasp the opportunity of being closer to the people and mine the richness of local knowl-edge and culture through new communication processes.
9 green exhibition-sustainability technology should be sold to the public through a loud exhibition of its uses and benifits
10

Collaborative consumption-the building indicates through programmatic relation-ships and spacial definitions a modal change towards resource sharing and increased social connectivity

It is all about the street-we have locked ourselves away behind walls for too long. the interaction that occurs on a good street is im-portant to community function. this is brought into the project through the idea of a 3 dimensional street

This costuction project looks at the most economical and sustainable method to host bike storage and related facilities for The University of Melbourne. The design uses engineered Australian Cyprus,in portal frames, componentised framing and cross laminated timber floor modules. The external skin is polycarbonate to enfuse the space with light during the day and show activity at night. All the buildings elements have been componentized for prefabrication purposes and scalability of shed form. Multiple bike parking facilities can be linked in an array.

What can architecture do? This project takes a playful look at the role of architecture in motivating specific movement patterns and modes of spatial occupation. Over time Architecture forces specific adaptations from the human body; from an evolutionary perspective, how should architecture be sculpting our future human form?
The Atavistic House re looks at the priority given to ergonomics in human habitat. Can the spaces we design, propel our minds and bodies into a stronger, fitter and happier future? Working upon the precedents of the Bioscleave House by Arakawa and Gins, and also the work of Claude Parent, how can an architecture against death, promote a more vital relationship between body, architecture and the environment? This project specifically targets hill block sites, as they provide an opportunity to play more expressively with levels and motivate a more vital architecture. In parallel, hill blocks are seen in their economic context as being potentially cheaper to build if the right construction system is designed. Using rehabilitation techniques as initial parameters for form finding, how can a house motivate a moreactive lifestyle and train the body?

The Urban Reef tackles the challenge of spatial segregation and equitable land use in Melbourne, with the aim of facilitating appropriate in fill development, close to services and jobs.
This project takes the opportunity of leveraging a 1.3 ha land parcel, controlled by the Victorian Government. The site is immediately East of the Bolte Bridge on the southern bank of the Yarra. The site is located within a contested and unique edge condition, of industrial land, large road infrastructure, urban regeneration and the water.
The site has been envisaged as a key stepping stone between the CBD, Docklands, the developing Fishermans Bend and the Bay. Its direct interface with multiple transport types, a dense urban population, and a rare large land assembly along the Yarra, makes it pivotal to include life enhancing spaces and to privilege the public realm.
The lack of usable public space along the Yarra, and in the Yarra Edge precinct, is symbolic of the implied spatial boundaries determined by Architectural conditions. This project is an opportunity to re-program the way we think of edge conditions, in particular those bound by the water.
An urban reef is created with a jetty and terraced seating to water height, allowing a tactile relationship and access to the water shuttle service. Housing, shops and a book end hotel work in concert to create protected and livable public space.
The public realm is privileged through raised courtyards with bbq spaces, weather barriers, abundant seating and an expansive aspect. The development allows a free flow of people across the site and towards the water edge.
The Urban Reef is the result of seeing Architecture as responsible for envisioning and delivering social infrastructure, that enhances life through spaces invoking a vibrant depth of stimuli, with fluid interactions between people, uses and space.
