February 2012

I would like to thank the 34 Principal Race

Officers (PROs) for their help and coopera-

tion in assembling the Race Committee As-

signments for the 2012 Racing Season. We

have 50 days of racing scheduled for the up-

coming Race Season, with 182 members par-

ticipating in Race Committee activity. The

Race/Assignment Schedule presented below

can be found in both the 2012 CYC Hand-

book, soon to be published, and on the CYC

web-site, under the “Racing” tab.

I would encourage Club members, especially

the new members, to familiarize themselves

with Section “K” of the CYC Handbook,

which deals with CYC Race Management.

Here you will find information on Race

Committee Duty and Race Committee In-

structions. For a quick review of some of the

more frequently asked about provisions, I

have included some excerpts from the Race

Committee Duty section of the Handbook.

Conflict with the Assigned RC Duty Date

If you have a conflict with your RC Duty as-

signment, you are permitted to exchange with

another member. Exchanges of dates may be

made freely, but, both members must notify

the two Principal Race Officers (PROs) in-

volved, and the First Vice Commodore. A

PRO may only exchange with another PRO.

All exchanges must be recorded, and initialed

by both members on the back of each work

card before the first exchanged race date.

Once an exchange is made, each member is

responsible for the new race date only, in-

cluding any fee for no-shows.

Work Hour Credits

Assigned RC Duty does not count towards

work hour credits. Additional RC Duty will

be credited as work hours for actual hours

served. Performance of additional RC Duty

hours (credited or otherwise) does not relieve

the member of the responsibility for any fees

resulting from no-shows on their assigned or

exchanged dates.

Race Management Seminars

All Club members, who perform RC Duty,

are encouraged and welcomed to attend a

CYC Race Management Seminar. Seminars

will be announced and conducted prior to the

beginning of the racing season. PROs and

Club members will receive two work hour

credits for completing the seminar, after fully

completing their RC duty assignment.

As a member of CYC, you may be aware that CYC has adopted a “Clean Marina Practice” to promote environmentally responsible marina and boating practices. With the introduction of the new Greenway walking trail, the sewage holding tank, located on CYC grounds and des-ignated for this purpose, went away. This event made it difficult for Club members to comply with the Clean Marina Practice.

A survey of available waste pump-out facilities, available on Lake Loudon, revealed that the nearest facility was located at the International Harbor Marina, on Gallagher Creek. Not only was the travel distance inconvenient, 11.28 miles round trip, but, there was a charge of $15.00 per use. Consequently, the CYC Plan-ning Committee undertook a project designed to allow CYC to reinstate its Clean Marina waste management practice, and provide a convenient facility for member use.

With bit of investigation, it was discovered that the Clean Vessel Act provided Grant funding for projects involving the purchase and installa-tion of marina waste pump-out systems. After a considerable effort in obtaining bid pro-posals, gathering information on products and services, submitting a Grant Application to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and compiling a comprehensive proposal for Board consideration and approval, CYC was success-ful in obtaining a Grant Funding Contract award.

Here are some important facts on the Waste Pump-Out Project:

The State Grant will reimburse the Club for 75% of the project cost, with the Club re-sponsible for 25%.

The Project Budget is: Grant Funding $17,838.00 Club Share of Expense $ 5,946.00 Total Project Cost $23,784.00

There will be no charge for the use of the waste pump-out system.

The system will be available for use during months when CYC provides water to the docks.

The Hose Stand will have several deck adapters, and a potty wand attachment, to handle all pump-out contingencies, and is useable with removable storage tanks.

Installation of the system will take place in the spring/summer timeframe of 2012.

The system pump will be located in the Race Committee building, while the Hose Stand will be located on the East Dock ap-proach, in an area near the UT 420s float-ing dock.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jason Williams and Dwight Guinn for their ef-forts, and help. They were very instrumental in making this a successful project.

The CYC Library, located in the lobby of the

clubhouse, is open every Sunday from 12:15

p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Items may be checked out

for two weeks. To return library items when

the library is not open, place the items in the

book return box under the table near the

phone.

Copies of the current and past Practical Sailor

magazines are available in a 3-ring binder to

the left of the fireplace. They are on the open

shelving and are available to read 24/7. Origi-

nal issues are only available during library

hours. The January issue features – an engine

winterizing funnel, replacing worn deck non-

skid (an excellent article), LED spotlights,

winter reading selections, satellite phones, edi-

tors power tool selection for the toolbox.

Earn one work hour for each library duty

worked. Interested in volunteering for library

duty? Contact Steve Litherland. Slots are still

available for March 11 & 18 and April 15 & 22

for anyone interested in volunteering for the

low water season.

Helpful Tips for Reserving Club Facilities

The days are starting to get longer and

UT Sailing is coming out of hibernation.

We have been competing locally in the

low water series all winter, but in the se-

cond week in February it will be time to

hit the road again.

The South Atlantic Inter-Collegiate Sail-

ing Association is divided into two dis-

tricts, North points and South points.

Every two semesters we alternate who

hosts the first season opener and champi-

onship regatta. For the next two semes-

ters South Points will be hosting these

regattas, so in two weeks we will be hop-

ping in a car and driving all the way to

St. Petersburg, Florida to sail at Eckerd

College in the SAISA Open Regatta. It’s

hard to justify 24 hours in a car in one

weekend for 12 hours of sailing, but we

do have a club member that is Vice Presi-

dent of SAISA and he has already orga-

nized a theme for all of the colleges com-

peting… NASCAR Open!

The following weekend we will be in New

Orleans for the Nelson Roltsche Intersec-

tional Regatta which just so happens to

fall on the Mardi Gras weekend before

Fat Tuesday. After that we will be in

Clemson and the following weekend,

March 10th, we will be hosting our home

regatta at CYC! I can’t wait for the

weather to start warming up and the

fresh spring breeze to start blowing in. I

look forward to seeing you all on the wa-

ter!

Portable electrical equipment (such as heaters, fans, air conditioners, dehumidifiers)

shall not be operated on unattended boats.

Unattended boats may only be connected to shore power with a 30amp #10 AWG cable

using a waterproof adapter, if necessary, only to power equipment permanently in-

stalled on the boat with a total load not exceeding 15amps.

Owners (not CYC) are responsible for adjusting dock lines as necessary resulting from

lake level fluctuations.

Sailboats shall be secured with minimum of two (2) bow lines, two (2) stern lines, and one

(1) spring line. The size (diameter) of the lines depends on the size and weight of the

boat.

Keep your boat from sinking or listing on the dock and other members’ property.

Do not tie your stern or bow line to any cleat on the floating finger pier. Cleats on the

finger pier may be used for spring lines or other secondary lines only. Tie your dock

lines to the piling/s whenever possible. These piling are solid and do not move.

The Keelboat Fleet conducted four (4) races in

January. We squeezed the first race in on Janu-

ary 8th before rain moved in and ended the rac-

ing. The second and third races were conducted

on the 15th in spite of low wind and considerable

river current. The wind blew hard on the 29th and the fleet held the fourth and last race of the month

with a run up to Cox Lighthouse (near Riversound

Subdivision).

As of the 15th, the top three positions in the fleet

were held by “Wind Walker” (Gamey), “B -

Happy” (Ballatin), and San Juan 24 (Mitchell).

There was one new registration in January.

Feb 12th: Ervin Grove (UT Team A)
