The Constellation in Section

+++

The project objective is to design a cabinet where a student of architecture could develop all the activities needed to carry out his fi nal project. However, the challenge of this project is much bigger, because the material was defi ned in advance and it was one donated by a wood factory: a limited number of boards of 2x1 meters.

Some self-imposed limitations were imposed: on one hand, use the minimum possible amount of material, and on the other use the minimum quantity of dif-ferent materials.

This forced to a design that will maxi-mize the structural qualities of the boards, which led to a triangular struc-ture in which each of the elements work to support and also they were used in any of the activities proposed. Further-more, the joints between panels had to be designed so that no glue or nails or screws were necessary. To accomplish this piece of furniture, parametric design tools were required and the constraints of the manufacturing processes of the numerical control machine that was available for the manufacture, had to be taken into account.

Diff erent models were developed in a scale of 1:50 to check its spatial and structural qualities, until the fi nal design was reached. Only three materials were

used in the in the 1:1 model that was built: wood, staples and metal mesh and the fi nal amount of board used was 12.

The furniture consisted of two parts, the fi rst was 1 meter wide (the exact width of the given board) where activities such as drawing (could be used by three peo-ple at a time), sitting down to rest, lying down to nap, lying down to sleep, etc., were taking place. The other part was a movable piece 0.50 meters wide (exactly half of the given board) that served to close the cabinet and made it not acces-sible from the outside, and also as a seat for a third person, or a shelf to store the work items, etc.

The Cloud Made of Points

+++

The genesis of the project is seeking an organic system confi gured to respond to organizational laws dependents of program, location, energy and material-ity of the project.

The dictatorship of the sun will not be the trigger for the project, but rather a tool that will be part of the decisions that will improve their ability to adapt to multiple situations that may be appear-ing.

To locate the system and make it physi-cal, a point cloud is determined and its

density, orientation, geometry, location and relationship will need to respond to the necessities and objectives to be achieved in the project.

Natural organizational systems are taken as reference in the proryect that have already been tested and whose expec-tations of adaptability accomplish the objectives.

These systems are defi ned on the one hand, by the elements that determine the borders between the built pieces and are defi ned by VORONOIS, and that the others are determined by the internal triangulations of each of the elements by the DELAUNAYS.

PROGRAM

The program is one of the modifi ers of the cloud made of points. It generates maps of densities that build diff erent spaces depending on conditions of occupancy, equipment needs, facilities, access from the perimeter and the rela-tionships between each of the programs to the rest.

ENERGY

Energy is another modifi er of the cloud made of points, creating or destroy-ing points, locating, directing, produc-ing moving and grouping points and to create maps based on the required minimum distance and relative position between them, and the properties of absorption or emission energy.

OFFICE BUILDING IN CASTELLANA AV. MADRIDfi rst prize

+++

The building poses an alternative to the air-conditioned sealed-envelope energy-certifi ed offi ce environment. First, the glass curtain-wall gives place to a facet-ed ceramic-clad envelope which, through shape, maximizes radiation summer re-fl ection and winter collection. Second, the convective air-conditioning system gives place to a water radiant system which tempers the offi ce space through high-inertia concrete slabs. Thus, struc-ture and performance are integrated by means of its envelope and its environ-mental control systems.

NATIONAL ENERGY MUSEUMselected

+++

All contemporary building must be committed to effi ciency, the technol-ogy of its time, in order to preserve our habitat for future generations. The MNE must make it explicit and exemplary.

Must demonstrate the reduction of its environmental impact, the man-agement and recycling of waste that it is producing, the use of renew-able energy and turn it into learning content. The goal is to achieve the energy effi ciency rating class “A” “ and that requires a proper architec-tural layout and the use of passive bioclimatic technologies, especially for higher consumption systems such as HVAC, supported with active renewable sources. In essence, the building has to minimize the neces-sity of energy through a bioclimatic effi cient design, and to override the

consumption of “dirty” energy usage with the implementation of renewable production sys-tems. The architectonic choice selected is not to generate a large building whose cladding will be thick and heavy, but to create a system of suc-cessive “air cushion”, to ensure that the inertia of the large volume of air inside the exhibition area is maximized. The outdoor area corresponding to motion is less demanding in terms of comfort for the itinerant condition.

The confi guration of the envelope has been raised to use greenhouse technology in so-lar gain and air movement. The solution colour supports and complements this behaviour. The contribution of radiant heat in winter will join the free air movement for renewal in the sum-mer, with minimum natural ventilation openings. In this case, the objective is an unheated build-ing without contribution of the extra equipment, only air fl ows and the control of relative humidity will ensure the contort in the interior.

COLLECTIVE HOUSINGselected

+++

The building resolves the needs of a high-density housing in a very small space by using an intermediary situ-ation between a shared corridor and an interior staircase.

In this manner, a wide variety of household types can be provided combining all of them in each fl oor plan Thus, the appearance of its facades is very dynamic and dual, responding to the lighting needs of each orientation.

The built architectural object should be an eff ective machine for research. Its functionality was the main goal of both the design team and the cus-tomer.

Both researchers, members of man-agement and other employees, had to be able to access their depend-encies in an easy way and without causing interference between each other.

Additionally, the building had to very restrictive respond to sustain-ability standards , so that both the materials and size or position rela-tive to the sun turned out as key de-sign elements.

Inside the building some of the ac-tivities were to take place in a high level of security so that, the accesses should be highly controlled.

Furthermore, its construction had to be executed as quickly as possi-ble. The result is a solid building of large dimensions, which does not become the protagonist of the place but thanks to the simplicity of the design lines of its facades, goes un-noticed in its environment.

Dynamism was the main goal of the project. It sought to create an envi-ronment in which young children could develop both physical and mental activities to develop their motor skills in the best way possi-ble. Besides the materials used were seeking a synchrony between the budget and the needs of the build-ing.
