Quick SummaryIn this proposal we will present four opportunities to obtain funding for your organization. This will provide you with multiple options to choose from. We will compare the proposals and present the best opportunity in the recommendation section of this proposal. The factors that are weighed into the decision include the amount awarded, time and effort required, and application deadlines.

The first grant proposed in this document is the Captain Planet Foundation Grant that could award up to $2,500. The deadlines on this grant are February 28 and September 30 for 2013.

The second grant proposed in this document is the Andrews Foundation Grant. In this grant, the foundation asks you to specify the amount you would need. This grant opportunity has no deadline. However, proposals received after September will be reviewed in the following year.

The third grant proposed in this document is the Lubbock Area Foundation that could award up to $5,000. The deadlines to apply to this grant are February 1st, May 1st, August 1st, and October 1st of each year.

The fourth grant proposed in this document is The Brown Foundation, Inc. that could award up to $5,000. This grant has no due date. Proposals are reviewed at the following foundations next monthly meeting.

These grant opportunities were found on an Internet database provided to TTU students. In the next section we go into detail on how to logon the database and how we found these opportunities in the database.

How We Researched Grant OpportunitiesThis section will describe how we researched different foundations that can supply the Lubbock Dream Center with new grant opportunities. It will include the criteria we used to search the grants, how we found them, why we chose four grant opportunities, and what those grants are.

CriteriaTo find the criteria about what types of grants to look for, we went to the Lubbock Dream Center’s website. On the website we found that the Dream Center works through the following ministries and outreaches:

Food Ministry Clothing Ministry Adopt A Block Ministry Beach Club Life Skills Training Adult Literacy Education Computer Education Special Neighborhood Outreaches Community Garden Faith Based Twelve Step Programs Sunday Morning Services Agape to local schools and other agencies Women’s Ministry Men’s Ministry Partnership with Churches and Schools

Finding the GrantTo research funding opportunities for the Lubbock Dream Center, we used the online database that we have access to as Texas Tech students.

At first we tried searching for grants on Google. This provided us with many grant opportunities but few fit the criteria we were looking for. The grants

Page 5: Lubbock Dream Center Proposal:A way to fund your activities file · Web viewIn this proposal we will present four opportunities to obtain funding for your organization. This will

found on Google weren’t the type of grants that would have been helpful to the Lubbock Dream Center.

After this we tried Texas Tech’s database. The database of foundations proved to be very helpful. It was very easy to search for grants with certain criteria. To search the Tech database for grants, a student can log in at www.library.ttu.edu, click on “electronic resources” and find databases. From here, you can search all of the databases Texas Tech has to offer. The database we used to research the grant opportunities is “Foundation Center Online”.

Why We Used Four Different GrantsWe used four different grant options to maximize the amount of money the Dream Center can receive from grants. Four options also increase the chances of getting awarded with a grant. All of these grants can be used toward any of the activities the Lubbock Dream Center is involved in.

The Grants and Their FocusGrant 1- offered by Captain Planet Foundation, focuses on giving the awarded organization or school a head start, to bring environmental awareness to the surrounding community, and to encourage youth to participate in community service.

Grant 2- offered by The Andrew’s Foundation, focuses on child and family welfare, education, international/domestic poverty focused development, physical and mental health, religious and spiritual development.

Grant 3- offered by the Lubbock Area Foundation, focuses on providing organizations with highly needed assistance for programs and operations.

Grant 4- offered by The Brown Foundation, Inc., focuses on primary and secondary education. They are looking to improving public education in the state of Texas.

RecommendationThis section describes why we chose the four grants described in the report. It will also go over the grant that we recommend the Dream Center to apply for. The recommendation will specify the amount awarded, deadlines, and, the application process.

Why These Four GrantsWe found four grant opportunities that would be most beneficial for the Lubbock Dream Center to apply to. The grants focus on four areas that are current to the Dream Center. These areas are education, neighborhood outreaches, community garden, and spiritual growth.

The four grants were also chosen based on the guidelines and criteria the grant foundations are looking for. The application processes for the grants are similar. In general the grants require the organizations to be non-profit under the IRS sec 501 (c) (3) and to fill out and submit an application. The other guidelines vary from submitting a proposal to a final report of how the funds were used. The grants were chosen because we felt that The Lubbock Dream Center meets the requirements and a little more.

The Recommended GrantThe grant recommended for The Lubbock Dream Center is The Lubbock Area Foundation. The foundation is one of the two grants that award up to $5,000. The Foundation is the one that asks for minimal effort through the application process from the two.

The Lubbock Area Foundation grant is a locally based foundation. With the foundation locally based, the chances for The Lubbock Dream Center to receive the grant are higher. This grant awards up to $5,000. There are four application deadlines throughout the year, which is convenient for the applicant. The deadlines to apply for the grant are February 1st, May 1st, August 1st, and October 1st of each year. Along with the standard documentation, they ask that the applicant submit a narrative that describes the project and the need for it within the community, a project budget and

specific use of funds requested, a list of grants received or pending related to the project and plans for additional funding.
