The experiments, funded by US-based PATH, willbe carried out in the districts that reported the biggestnumbers of dengue cases in the capital city of the stateand in Guarulhos, Sao Paulo’s metropolitan region.

According to the Ministry of Health, Brazil is currentlyexperiencing a dengue fever outbreak. A total of 2,349cases have been confirmed in Sao Paolo city so far this

The Butantan Institute, in charge of the tests, saidFriday that a lab will be ready by December. A plantwill also be built to produce the drug, which is expectedto be available to Brazilians in 2010. The institute willsend a report to participants of the project in order todefine how each of them will take part in theconstruction and purchase of equipment for the plant.

The Butantan Institute’s president, Isaias Raw, saidthat if the vaccine output exceeds domestic demand forthe vaccine, they will “offer it to Africa and othercountries where there are cases of dengue”.

Dagon Bridge that indicates genuine goodwill, hugeinvestments and Myanmar engineers’ skills

Engineer.

Dagon Bridge being seen at night.

Cargo trucks run on the six-lane motorway of Dagon Bridge.

The Dagon Bridge, the 228th among the bridges,180 feet and above long, built by the State, wasinaugurated on 27 October 2007.

Till 1988, Myanmar had only two river-spanningbridges — the Sagaing Bridge over the AyeyawadyRiver and the Sittoung Bridge over the SittoungRiver. Since its assuming of State duties, theTatmadaw government has built a large number ofbridges, large and small, across the nation. Thatreflects its benevolence towards the nation.

Plans are under way to open the 13 newly-constructed bridges including Yadanabon Bridge(Mandalay), Sittoung Bridge (Moppalin), MezaliBridge, Uru Bridge and Bwetkyi Bridge.

Very high is the number of infrastructuresnecessary for national development the governmenthas built with genuine goodwill in the interests of thepeople. In doing so, the government had to investheavily.

Secure and smooth transport is one of thefundamental requirements for economic growth andswift commodity flow that play a pivotal role inbuilding a modern and developed nation. Thegovernment, the Tatmadaw and the people areworking hard together day and night in constructingroads and bridges on self-reliant basis. Now, thepeople are enjoying fruitful results of these transportfacilities.

Yangon, the commercial hub of Myanmar, has apopulation of more than 5.5 million. Since 1988, thegovernment has been upgrading existing roads, building new ones, and constructing many roads andbridges that link Yangon Division and other statesand divisions. So far, it has constructed a largenumber of bridges, large and small, inclusive of 31facilities, 180 feet and above long, such as MahaBandoola, Thanlyin, Bayintnaung, Aungzeya,Shwepyitha, Panhlaing and Twantay bridges.

Dagon Bridge is over the Bago River. The projectwas launched on 2 May 2000. It links Dagon Myothit(Seikkan Township) and Thanlyin Township. The4540 feet long facility’s clearance area is 130 feetwide and 18 feet high. It can withstand 75 tons ofloads.

It has a 72-foot-wide motorway and two six-foot-wide walkways on it. Thanks to the facility, products of Dagon Seikkan Industrial Zone, Dagon(South) Industrial Zone, Dagon (North) IndustrialZone, Dagon (East) Industrial Zone, and HlinethayaIndustrial City on Yangon side can be exported in a

short time through Thilawa International Port Terminalon Thanlyin side.

In addition, the people in Thanlyin, Kyauktan,Kayan and Thongwa townships will enjoy developmentin the economic, trade, education, health, religious, social and transport sectors.

Regarding the Dagon Bridge, an interview wasconducted with Deputy Superintending Engineer U

Tint Lwin of Special Project (Bridge) Group-1 ofPublic Works.Q: The bridge is a splendid one. I would like to know

how much did it cost.

A: It costs more than 18,000 million (18 billion)kyats.

Q: Was all the cost on the project from the Statefunds and was there any foreign assistance?

A: All the cost on the project was from the Statefunds and there was no foreign assistance.

Q: I notice something different. For instance, pillarsof the bridge are different from other bridges’.

A: You are right. The technology used for buildingthis bridge and that for the first Thanlyin Bridgeare not the same. It is an all-concrete bridgewithout any iron beams. It has a lot of strongpoints. For instance, iron-beam bridges needregular checks. Rusty spots of such bridges are tobe removed and such areas are to be paintedagain. We also have to check the bridge to knowif there is a damaged area due to sea water.Concrete bridges do not need such maintenancework.

Q: I would also like to know the purpose of buildingall-concrete bridge and why another facility wasbuilt near the first Thanlyin Bridge.

A: The purpose of building all-concrete bridge is tobe able to withstand heavier loads. So, the facilityconsists of 19 main pillars in the river, 13 pillarsfor the approach structure on Yangon side, and 15pillars for the approach structure on Thanlyinside. Why another facility was built near the firstThanlyin Bridge is to be able to withstand loadsover two times more than the capacity of the firstThanlyin Bridge. Like the Sittoung Bridge andSagaing Bridge, the first Thanlyin Bridge has onerailroad in the middle and a one-way motor roadeach on either side on it. The two motor roads areon the protrusions of the bridge, so it has limitedcapacity to withstand loads. Now, maximumweight allowed to pass on it is 36 tons. In the past, there was no problem because the trucks weresix-wheel vehicles. Now, trucks are 10-wheeland 12-wheel vehicles. So, the Dagon Bridge issuitable for heavy trucks with 40 or 50 tons ofloads each. It has a six-lane motorway on it, sotrucks and container trucks can pass through it at

(from page 8)the same time. If a car breaks down on the firstThanlyin Bridge, there is traffic jam on the bridge.

Q: I learnt that it took a long time to conduct a landsurvey and designate an axis for the bridge. Is itright?

A: Yes, it is. The Bago River is a little narrow. So, thefacility somewhat blocks the current of the river andthat makes the current strong with whirlpools. Wefaced difficulties to drive bore piles for the foundation. We used RCD bore piles for Dagon Bridge.

Q: You also built the Mawlamyine Bridge. So, mayI know the difference between the MawlamyineBridge and the Dagon Bridge?

A: We used different technologies for building thetwo bridges. To build the Mawlamyine Bridge,we first dug holes in the bed of the river and putconcrete into them to construct main pillars. Wehad to pump the water and earth from these holes. We had to overcome a lot of difficulties to completethis stage. We dug holes till reaching the rock

layer. The bridge was also designed to be resistantenough to earthquakes. As you know, the currentof the Thanlyin River is very swift. To build theDagon Bridge, we had to use cantilever to buildpillars so that the maximum length between twopillars is 160 feet. We used 398 105-foot-longRCD piles to build 19 pillars. We also used 240110-foot-long reinforced-concrete beams.

Q: Is the Dagon Bridge the largest one among thereinforced-concrete bridges in Myanmar?

A: Yes, it is. It can withstand 75 tons of a truck inmaximum and has a six-lane motor road on it. ThePathein Bridge also can withstand 75 tons ofloads, but it is a suspension one.

Q: I learnt that the design of the Dagon Bridge wasdrawn by Myanmar engineers. Is it right?

A: Myanmar engineers took all responsibilities fortechnology, scale model and design for the DagonBridge. We didn’t receive any foreign supervision, assistance and funds for the project. Myanmarengineers produced the scale model and built thebridge step by step by themselves.

Q: Then, the Dagon Bridge is the very pride ofMyanmar engineers. Isn’t it?

A: Yes, it is. The government provided funds andconstruction materials, and Myanmar engineerstook responsibilities for technology andinnovations. In fact, the project is due to the visionand guidance of the Head of State.

Q: How many staff and workers were used to completethe project on schedule?

A: More than 100 engineers including experts, morethan 50 permanent staff members and more than1000 night shift workers. Then, I interviewed fisherman U Aye Kyaw, 50,

of Kalarwe village in Thanlyin Township.Q: U Aye Kyaw, were you born here? And what is

your opinion about the bridge?A: Yes, Kalarwe is my native village. I have engaged in

the fishery work since I was 18. I carry marineproducts by boat to Yangon. Yangon is seen fromThanlyin, but we could not get there easily. Now, thegovernment has constructed the Dagon Bridge, soYangon is easily accessible from here in a short time.My products are now marketable. I have neverdreamt such a good opportunity. I have to say thanksto the leaders of the State. Now, the delight of all thepeople in our village for the bridge is beyond words.Next, I interviewed Junior Assistant Teacher DawNu Yee, 49, of Kalarwe village.

Q: Well, Daw Nu Yee, What benefits do you think

your village will enjoy from the Dagon Bridge?A: I am sure, due to the facility, the people in Thanlyin,

Kyauktan, Kayan and Thongwa on Thanlyin sidewill enjoy improvement in the social, education, health, and economic sectors. We are enjoying theresults of the government’s purpose of narrowingthe development gap through the Dagon Bridge. Inthe past, it was difficult for the youths in our regionto get degrees. Unlike in the past, now, we cantravel to Yangon easily due to the bridge. I am veryglad that more and more youths in our region willbe educated persons. The people are proud of and satisfied with the

Dagon Bridge that has emerged thanks to the genuinegoodwill of the government, huge investments andskills of Myanmar engineers.

Study finds organic food more nutritiousLONDON, 29 Oct — A study into organic food has found that it is more

nutritious than ordinary produce and may help to lengthen people’s lives.

Report shows Iranians study Nuclear Physics in BritainLONDON, 29 Oct — The Foreign Office of Britain has cleared dozens of Iranians to enter British universities

to study advanced Nuclear Physics and other subjects, the Sunday Times reported.

An EU-fundedproject that cost 12 millionpounds (some 24 millionUS dollars) showed thatorganic fruit andvegetables contain asmuch as 40 per cent moreantioxidants, which arebelieved to help fend offcancer and heart disease. They also contain morebeneficial minerals suchas iron and zinc, theSunday Times reported.

Researchers grew fruitand vegetables and raisedcattle on adjacent organic

and non-organic sites on a725acre (about 290hectare) farm attached toNewcastle University, andat other sites in Europe. They found that levels ofantioxidants in milk fromorganic herds were up to90 per cent higher thanthose from conventionalherds.

Organic tomatoesfrom Greece were alsofound to have significantlyhigher levels ofantioxidants, includingflavonoids, thought to

reduce coronary heartdisease, said the report.

Professor CarloLeifert, coordinator of thefouryear project, said thedifferences were so markedthat organic produce wouldhelp to increase the nutrientintake of those people noteating the recommendedfive portions a day of fruitand vegetables.

The Food StandardsAgency confirmed over theweekend that it wasreviewing the evidencebefore deciding whether tochange its advice. Britishministers and the agencysaid earlier that there wereno significant differencesbetween organic andordinary produce.

In the past nine months about 60 Iranians have beenadmitted to study postgraduate courses deemed“proliferation-sensitive” by the security services, thereport said. The disciplines range from nuclear physics tosome areas of electrical and chemical engineering andmicrobiology.

Figures showed that 30 Iranians were doingpostgraduate degrees in subjects covering nuclear physicsand nuclear engineering during the year 2005 and 2006.

The Foreign Office said it was reviewing the vettingfor sensitive areas of study and planned to announce anoverhaul within the next few weeks to make proceduresmore rigorous.

Subject areas covered by the government’s vettingoverhaul include some types of metallurgy, molecularbiology, chemistry and nuclear science.

Currently, vetting is done only when a universityvoluntarily informs the government that a candidate fromoutside the EU has been offered a place to study asensitive subject.

Under the new online system monitored by thesecurity services, universities will be obliged to informthe government if any non-European intends to take acourse in such subjects. They will also be required to givedetails about what is included in the course.
