This resource guide was developed by the Wicomico and Worcester County (Maryland) Health Departments in cooperation with Healthiest Maryland Businesses, an initiative of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

It is designed as a companion piece to the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) Health ScoreCard (HSC), a needs assessment for businesses, as presented by Maryland’s Healthiest Businesses, which can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/s/HMBHealthScoreCard.

It follows the same sequence as the HSC and provides local, state, and national resources for each section of the HSC.

INTRODUCTION

According to the 2014 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation County Health Rankings, Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore is populated by some of the state’s unhealthiest residents. All jurisdictions in the state were ranked from healthiest (#1) to least healthy (#24). Worcester County ranked 11th, Wicomico County ranked 18th, and Somerset County ranked 20th. (countyhealthrankings.org/app/maryland/2014/rankings/outcomes/overall)

Adult residents of Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties have increased risk for chronic diseases which can impact your businesses bottom line. Recent health data revealed that:

32.5% are obese

41.2% have high cholesterol

34.2% have high blood pressure

11.3% have diabetes

52.8% do not participate in regular physical activity

26.3% have a healthy body weight

Poor employee health leads to direct costs for the business including increased medical costs, pharmaceutical expenditures, short and long term disability claims, and workers compensation. Indirect costs are also incurred. Increased absenteeism and reduced presen-teeism are often consequences of poor employee health. Here are some facts at a glance:

Unscheduled absences cost employers $2,650 per salaried worker and $3,600 per hourly worker. (Shiftwork Practices 2005).

For a single employer, short-term and long-term disability and worker’s compensation account for 5% of the cost per employee and medical costs account for 25% of this cost. What is astounding is that lost productivity due to presentee-ism is 34% and lost productivity due to absenteeism is 36%. (IBI Research Insights 2007).

Investing resources in worksite wellness programs can be beneficial to your business by:

Preventing healthy employees from developing chronic dis-ease can save $350 a year.

Reducing employee health risk can save $153 a year.

The median return on investment (ROI) is $3 for every $1 spent.

(Ron Goetzel, PhD, Johns Hopkins University Institute for Health and Productivity Studies)

The wealth of your business is improved by the health of your em-ployees. Businesses with worksite wellness programs which foster a culture of health and safety at work have healthier, happier employ-ees – and healthier bottom lines, too.

The typical employee spends an average of nine hours a day at work. This provides employers with a unique opportunity to have a posi-tive impact on their employees, and subsequently a positive effect on our community. Together, we can change our employees, which can change our culture, which will change the statistics, which can save dollars and lives!
