Main switch applicationsSwitch-disconnectors and breakers are typically used in isolating individual sections of the plant or as the main switch for the whole HVAC system, both AC and DC. ABB’s breakers and switches are compact in size, have high ratings, unique safety features and global availability and acceptability. ABB switch-disconnectors range from 16 to 3150 amperes and the breakers from 20 to 2500 amperes in AC-23 switching categories.
Motor starter applicationsOur switch-disconnectors and breakers are used in motor starter applications for switching and isolating. Together with contactors, thermal overload relays and fuselinks they also provide protection against overloads and short circuits.
The circuit breakers are designed for starting, switching and protecting three-phase asynchronous motors. ABB proposes two different solutions for this type of application:– a traditional system, with a circuit breaker for protection
against short circuit, a thermal relay for protection against overload, missing or unbalanced phase and a contactor for motor switching
– a system of integrated protection with the PR222MP trip unit, which ensures both protection against short circuit and overload, as well as against missing or unbalanced phase and against rotor block
ABB’s extensive range of products for the HVAC segment
ABB’s very extensive range of appliances and systems for low voltage power distribution includes a large selection of products for process control, protection and automation. In many countries, for example in the United States, air conditioning accounts for over 40 percent of power consumption and, in general, motors use the most electrical power in starting, running and stopping fans, compressors and pumps.
ABB’s products for air conditioning applications include main switches, drives, components for motor starters and control panels and disconnect switches for isolation. Depending upon the application for which the equipment is to be used, ABB products are compliant with major international standards, in particular those in force in Europe (IEC) and North America (UL).
Isolation applicationsLocal safety switches can be enclosed in plastic or metal enclosures for outdoor use up to protection class IP65. These products are typically used during maintenance to isolate individual sections or the whole system and mechanically secure the switch in open position by using padlocks.

Enclosed switch-disconnectors provide the right solution in the power range 7.5…800 kW/690 V, AC-23AThe enclosed switches are suitable for power distribution in factories and buildings, as local motor isolators or main switches. Each incoming supply shall be provided with a hand operated main switch-disconnector according to the machine directive EN 60204 and isolate the electrical equipment reliably from the supply.
To meet these requirements the enclosures have handles that can be locked with padlocks in the OFF-position.
The wide range of switch-disconnectors are available in plastic, steel sheet, stainless steel sheet and aluminum alloy enclosures from 16 to 1600 amperes.
The most compact disconnect switch solution from 16 to 3150 amperesThe switch-disconnector is largely used as the main switch in low voltage switchgears for distribution of power, starting and stopping motors and isolating loads during maintenance.
The range from 16 to 160 amperes is either base plate or door mounted by snap-on or screw fitting. Front operated 3-, 4-, 6-, 8-pole and change-over types are available as standard.
From 200 up to 3150 amperes the switch-disconnectors are designed as pole modules and they are available as 1- to 4-pole versions, front or side operated and change-over switches.
For fusible short circuit protection switch fuses are available for DIN, BS, NFC, UL and CSA types of fuse links from 16 to 1250 amperes.
Circuit breakers designed for protecting motors from 0.37 kW up to 355 kW in very compact sizes– Two different protection solutions: traditional or integrated– Advanced electronic protection units are available– Exellent coordination with A and AF series ABB contactors
and with ABB thermal release– Wide choice of terminals and accessories

Steel sheet enclosed front operated safety switches, IP65
The safety switch comes complete with a black selector type (OTL16…63) or pistol type (OTL75…90) handle (I-O/ON-OFF),
one NO auxiliary contact and PE terminal. Cable entries from bottom (OTL16...63) or from top and bottom (OTL75...90).
Compression glands and flanges must be ordered separately.

Drives applications
ABB switch-disconnectors and breakers are commonly used as main switch in drives applications. Together with the protection functions embedded in ABB standard drives for HVAC applications they provide protection against several fault situations such as motor short circuit, overvoltage and overcurrent.
In HVAC applications, most of which are pumps and fans, AC drives can cut energy bills by as much as 80 percent. Power savings of up to 50 percent can be reached by reducing the motor speed by 20 percent.
ABB has delivered millions of AC drives worldwide, cutting electricity consumption by about 140 TWh per year. This corresponds to an average reduction in CO2 emissions of over 70 million tonnes every year.
One of the biggest benefits of using ABB standard drives for HVAC applications is the superior energy saving opportunity it creates compared to fixed speed motors or conventional flow control methods. Rather than have an electric motor running continously at full speed, an AC drive allows the user to variably control the motor speed, depending on the demand.
