Deuteronomy 22:1 You shall not watch your neighbor’s ox or sheep straying away
and ignore them; you shall take them back to their owner.
Every day we are confronted with choices. Choices about whether to help or turn
and walk away. I find it somewhat frustrating that God knew he was going to need to be
this specific with his chosen people. Can you imagine seeing your neighbors’ livestock
getting away and not doing something to help? It’s sort of the basic tenet of being a good
neighbor. Look out for one another. God challenges us to take care of one another, even
to the point of looking out for the animals of the household.
So, how often are you confronted with this challenge of helping? This is not a
new conversation, and Jesus makes it very clear what the expectation is. In the very
beginning, God asked Cain where his brother is and Cain asks the question “Am I my
brother's keeper?” In contrast at the beginning of His ministry, Jesus is teaching and is
interrupted by His mother and brothers coming. He responds by saying “here are my
brothers!”
For the most part, we can reach out to those we like, and share with those we
know to be family. But the expectation is that we will help everyone. That when we are
confronted by even the most menial task to help a neighbor we are not to turn our back
on it. One of my favorite poems is Robert Frost's “The Mending Wall.” In it, more than
once, Frost asserts that “Good fences make good neighbors.” But it is clearly not the fence
that makes the good neighbor but the time invested in walking the fence together. It is
time spent doing life together. I feel that one of our challenges today is that we get so
busy we forget to do life together.
A part of Paul’s teaching to the church in Corinth is to do life together, even to
the point of waiting for one another to eat. In Christ, we are called to embrace one
another where we are and walk on that path together. Walking with someone through the
darkness is one the most challenging parts of life. But sometimes the only light they have
is the light of Jesus reflected in us. So take care of your neighbors!
Blessings and Peace, Jerry

Birthdays Your Benevolence Team has been working this year to meet the needs of people in our community
who have turned to Asbury for financial assistance due to life circumstances beyond their control.
The following is a report of our community assistance for 2017:
Total Contributions for 2017: $22,672.74
Disbursements from Contributions:
Rent/Mortgage Payments - $15,115.68
Utilities - $6,302.23
Misc. Related Expenses - $212.33
Asbury has assisted 66 individual members of households. With an average of 3.5 people per
household, approximately 231 people have received help from Asbury’s Benevolence Fund in
2017.
The Benevolence Team consists of 13 members of the congregation and our two pastors. Two
team members and one of the pastors meet at 3:00 p.m. each Tuesday with petitioners
requesting assistance from Asbury. However, the team does not meet if there is less than $500
in the Benevolence Fund or if there are no requests for assistance that week.
The Benevolence Team wishes to express our many thanks for your continued contributions and
support throughout the year. Your generosity enables our Team to distribute the blessings of God’s
bounty to those in need. The Team would also like to acknowledge Susan Bowers for her help in
providing updated financial information after donations have been made through the week. We
also value the assistance of the volunteer receptionists in helping us facilitate the application and
appointment scheduling process involved in this ministry.

The United Methodist Women will meet February 15th at 11:30 AM. I call on all women of the church to join us for fun, fellowship and learning about a social issue affecting our church and community. Our hostesses, Becky Yonz, Marjorie Bullen, Caroline Ricker, and Bettye Anne Bewley, are planning an interesting program to celebrate Social Action month. They ask that you bring a bag lunch and drinks will be provided. Debbie Hendrix will have a short pledge service. Come and help plan for this year’s Prom Closet, and learn how this is going to be a church wide mission project. Our mission project for this month will be monetary gifts for Relay for Life. This time of year with extremely cold winter conditions, we have read about a number of house fires in Greene County. Families have been displaced and are in need of everything because many didn’t have insurance or were underinsured. We are currently assisting at least four families that were affected in the last few months, so our inventory is in VERY short supply again. Items like chest of drawers, beds/mattresses, sofas, dinette tables and chairs, cookware, small appliances, end tables, blinds & curtains, pillows are on the top of their list. We are getting low again on towels and washcloths, so if you have any, or know others who may have items to donate, please let us know or drop them off at the church office. Thanks to the UMW for assisting with linens, cookware and other items this month. They are certainly appreciated, and they are being given to families within a few days. We are trying to keep up with the needs for mattresses and box springs, so we purchased almost $1,000 this past month, and those are being distributed quickly. We continue our best to pick up items that people want to donate but have no way to bring them. If you would like to help, please contact someone on the committee. Items that families normally need quickly: • Appliances: Washers, dryers, small appliances. • Bedding: Cash donations to purchase new mattresses, but box springs and bed frames in good condition are welcome. • Furniture: Small dressers and chest of drawers, couches, loveseats, dinette tables & chairs and lamps. • Linens & household items: Twin, full and queen sheet sets, pillows, blankets, bedspreads/comforters, towels, washcloths, dishcloths, window blinds, rugs. • Kitchen: Forks, knives & spoons, cook pots and pans, frying pans, mixing & serving bowls, casserole dishes.

Resurrection was a blast! We had 26 youth attend this event and it would have been simply impossible without the assistance
from parent (and non-parent!) volunteers. Big thanks to our AMAZING chaperones: Linda Fitzpatrick, Steve Crouch, Tom Wright,
the Whitakers, the Berrys, and Kathy Shae! Our speaker, Rev. Rachel Billups, used the theme, “work in progress,” to illustrate how
we are all in need of constant molding by Jesus. We should never have the mindset that we are a finished product. If we stay
hungry to be filled up with the Holy Spirit and motivated to implement Him into our lives, then God will meet us exactly where we
are!
Sunday nights are back! 6-7:30pm in Asbury fellowship hall! Come and enjoy a Bible study, a small snack, and fun games! All are
welcome!!!

The Story of a Hymn
Here I Am, Lord UMH# 593
Words and music: Daniel L. Schutte, 1981
This song of commitment and sending forth is sung in both denominational and ecumenical worshipping communities in the
USA. Schutte’s setting contrasts the Hebrew psalmic transcendent characterizations of God as Lord of sea, sky, snow, rain,
wind, and flame, with compelling prophetic and pietistic themes of the caring God who is intimately involved in the struggles of
the poor and oppressed and is concerned for the well-being of each member of the human family—the witness of the struggle
and concern being those, like Isaiah, who positively respond to the call:
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “ Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”
And I said, “Here am I; send me!” (Isaiah 6:8)
Its lack of Christian rhetoric makes the hymn an ideal song for use in interfaith worshipping communities and similar occasions.
