DIAMONDS TO ALL…THE HONOR OF THE GIFT OF MEMBERSHIP

Pam Bond, Epsilon State Second Vice President

An exquisitely beautiful present adorned with sparkles, ribbons and bows. You carefully remove the trimmings

to reveal a fabulous uncut diamond bigger than your fist! You are told that it will become faceted and polished

over time with use as you accomplish the most wonderful things. Large chunks of the giant gem break off as

gifts to those you work with to illuminate entire institutes of learning across the world. Over the years your

diamond does indeed become even more exquisite than you ever imagined with the sparkle inside you increasing

as well. The work that created the facets and sparkle was difficult but, oh, the beauty of the inner diamond is

shining so brightly. Those chunks you gave to others have also become faceted and polished. Together, they are

the brightest diamonds ever seen. Even stronger than the diamonds themselves , a bond has been created---the

membership of a group of sisters working together with the goal of including other women to help carry the

sparkle of that original diamond. What more perfect time? During this Christmas season, join me in presenting

diamonds to fellow educators --- the honor of the gift of membership. May you have a wonderfully blessed

Christmas and may our DKG diamonds sparkle ever brighter!

PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE STANDING RULES OF EPSILON STATE Article V.D.3 c. [1] Which now reads:

New c

[2] Be amended by inserting new words or phraseology as follows:

Insert new c. to read c. A First Timer to Southeast Regional Conference or International Convention requesting

reimbursement should attend a majority of conference or convention events and the First

Timers’ Orientation, if there is no conflict.

Original c, d, e, and f will be changed to d, e, f, and g

[3] Which, if adopted would read: (underline the changes):

D. First-Timers’ Fund [2004]

3.Guidelines:

c. A First Timer to Southeast Regional Conference or International Convention requesting

reimbursement should attend a majority of conference or convention events and the First Timers’

Orientation, if there is no conflict.

Rationale:

To our committee's knowledge, this fund has not been misused. Professional educators have exercised good judgment in the use

of these funds. This recommendation clarifies that Epsilon State wants any member receiving money from the First Timers' fund

to use that money so that she can experience the Regional or International meetings and workshops.

Fiscal Impact: The fiscal impact would depend upon the number of First Timers receiving funds. That number would change on an annual basis.

Approximate Annual Cost:

The annual cost would change on an annual basis. Submitted by: First-Timers' Committee

WORDS FROM THE PRESIDENT Donnis Poe, Epsilon State President

Epsilon - What is the season of your chapter?

Is your chapter in the winter season? Indecisive as to what will be our

next step in Delta Kappa Gamma. A high-risk chapter could be defined as

a chapter in the winter season. If this is the case then there would be 11

chapters in our state who are in the winter season (2011 Chapter President

Annual Report). What are potential pitfalls of a chapter in the winter

season: Dissolving, complacency, inability for achievement of a full slate

of officers. Twelve of our chapters fall into this category. How do

chapters survive the winter season? CHANGE. Meeting place, programs,

visit schools, invite former members to meetings. Winter chapters CAN

survive.

Is your chapter in the fall season? Reflecting on your journey, appreciating the achievement of strong spring

and summer seasons without envisioning the need to improve? Waiting for winter to arrive! Why change

something that is or has worked - FOR NOW! Chapters in the fall season may be defined as those who do not

complete the required documents of the IRS and International. Approximately 3 of our chapters fall into this

category (2011 Chapter President Annual Report). How many of our chapters are in the fall season???? Only

time will tell.

Is your chapter in the summer season? Officers are ready to assist and impact change? Programs have been

planned and meetings scheduled. Members have been assigned to committees. Your chapter is reaping the

benefits of spring.

Is your chapter in the spring season? Reports/Applications are complete/articles written to submit for the

various opportunities that our state and international organization offers (52 chapter presidents submitted

annual reports last year). Leadership positions are filled. Travel plans have been made to attend the state,

regional or international conferences. Members are excited about their membership. The chapter is

BLOOMING with new growth and members. Your chapter is REACHing!

Members and chapters cease to exist for many reasons (Death, geographic limitations, and health, financial).

No chapter should strive to be a winter, fall or summer season. Yet, all chapters should be stuck in the spring

season. Our state is strong with chapter memberships ranging from less than ten to 76. We have active

communication venues (Website, Donnis' Dialogue, D&D’s Writings, Red Red Rose Alert, and The Deltion).

State officers are available and visible throughout the state by visiting chapters, assisting in chapter needs.

Epsilon 2012 membership reports 1656 active members, 158 reserve, and 59 initiates who are eager with the

anticipation of bigger and better things to come. As a member in a society which empowers women to design,

embrace and achieve personal and professional endeavors . . . What is the season in your chapter?

In Memoriam….

Strands of “When the Saints Go Marching In” echoed through Granberry Hall at Louisiana College as those

attending the Central District Meeting enjoyed the Louisiana-themed event. The décor, the favors, the food, the

entertainment and the speakers’ words related to the Louisiana Bicentennial.

Following the committee reports, Louisiana came to life. Charles Neal gave an enlightening presentation

entitled “This is Your Flag”. Displaying each of the flags that have flown over Louisiana, Mr. Neal shared

interesting historical events with reference to each flag.

An overview of the festivities for the Bicentennial in the Central District was discussed by Shirley Ingram from

the Alexandria/Pineville Convention Visitors Bureau.

Louisiana fare was enjoyed by all: Catfish Pontchartrain, hush puppies and pecan pie. Buckeye Junior High

School Choir and Alexandria Middle Magnet School Strings finished off the day with several Louisiana songs

for all to enjoy.

Beta Xi members provided an enjoyable and informative meeting for all. Thank you for bringing Louisiana to

life.

Inside your very own Central District:

Alpha Beta (Central District) members take a moment to pose during the

book sale at the Holiday Open House held in Winnfield on November 8,

2012. Members donated books and magazines from their own collections

and sold them for a steal at $1 for paperbacks & bundled magazines and $2

for hard covers. Many members bought new books for themselves too.

Each year, Alpha Beta awards a $500 scholarship to a deserving senior

majoring in education. The profits of the book sale are designated to the

scholarship. Alpha Beta members were delighted to encourage reading in

our community as well as add to our book collections!

Fifty sisters gathered October 6, at the First United Methodist Church in Minden for the Northwest

District Meeting. The theme for the day was “Glimpses into the Past and Future”.

During the general session chapter presidents were presented, state committee reports were given, and

state officers’ reports were given. Three interesting and well received breakout sessions - Book Review with

Jackie Sharp, Born in the Wrong Century with Jane Manning, and Louisiana Bicentennial with Lester Moore

were conducted.

During the luncheon awards were given for Rosebud, Rose-in-Bloom, Golden Roses, and Attendance.

President Donnis Poe encouraged each sister to compare her chapter to the seasons of the year. She encouraged

chapters to bloom with new growth – to REACH – to evaluate the chapter standing and make a commitment to

become an active vibrant chapter.

J. Wallace James Elementary School was buzzing! What was all the buzz about? Why, the 2012

Southwest District meeting, of course. On the morning of Saturday, October 13, 2012 over one hundred

Southwest District members descended upon Lafayette J. Wallace James Elementary School. What excitement!

To the credit of a wonderful group of DKG sisters under the leadership of Alpha president Tammi Reynaud, the

meeting was a total success. Alpha chapter planned a meeting truly ready to “spice-up” any good southwest

Louisiana Delta Kappa Gamma sister’s life.

The program was planned so that each chapter was able to participate. A special effort was made to

make the meeting truly “our” District meeting. In an attempt to mentor new teachers at the district level, each

chapter president brought a new teacher gift which was placed in a huge basket. At the end of the meeting one

chapter was chosen to take home the basket as a gift to a new teacher of their choice. Interesting and

entertaining reports were given by committee members and our state officers. Donnis Poe our state president

addressed members with her wisdom and grace.

Five break-out sessions kept members busy trying to decide which ones to attend. They were excellent

and included Party Yourself into Shape, Visual Thinking Strategies, Introduction to Scrapbooking, Recycle

Books into Journals, and Listen to Your Body When it Talks to You about Your Health. Members also had the

opportunity to tour the beautiful school. Thanks to Principal Dana Schmersahl, who is also a member of Alpha

Chapter, for the use of the beautiful facility.

Members were entertained during lunch by the Northside High School Step Team, a fantastic group of

dancers impressing members with their precise, quick dance movements. Also, during lunch, members were

honored to have State Representative Steven Ortego as the guest speaker. Mr. Ortego won the hearts of

members with his stories and his genuine support for teachers. Because both his mother and grandmother were

teachers he holds a special regard for those in this profession. His late grandmother, Gloria Brignac, was a

former member of Delta Kappa Gamma and president of Alpha Zeta Chapter (Opelousas) of the Southwest

District.

The meeting came to a close leaving members with smiles and hearts full. It was a wonderful day of

friendship, learning and sharing with one another. Delta Kappa Gamma is much more than just an

organization. Its meeting old friends and making new ones, laughing, working, learning together and standing

together as key women educators, reaching our goals as we become healthy chapters empowering one another.

Make plans now to attend next year’s Southwest District meeting in Crowley to be hosted by Xi chapter,

Lisa Stewart, President.

Illuminating Chapters through Kaleidoscopic Seasons

On Saturday October 20th

, the NE District Meeting was held at First Baptist Church in Winnsboro, LA.

Omega Chapter, led by Orene Sharp, provided a glorious atmosphere with refreshments to start the day ranging

from fruits to breakfast sandwiches. Six chapters were represented in the Presidents Processional. They were:

Donna Patton; Eta, Lori Myers, Theta; Orene Sharp, Omega; Dianne Simms, Alpha Alpha; Connie Williams,

Beta Iota; and Linda Edwards, Beta Chi. Forty-eight women attended the meeting which included members

from the NE District, State Officers, and visitors. State Officers and State Committee members gave their

reports and challenges to the NE District. Entertainment was provided by Omega Chapter member, Jana

Thomas and her family in which they sang and played some beautiful Christian songs for all members to enjoy.

Mary Ann Hatfield spoke on Illuminating Leadership, Laughter, and Leisure. For leadership, Mary Ann

encouraged all of the NE District members to be on state committees along with applying for the Bea Davis

State Leadership Conference and the International Golden Gift Leadership Management Seminar. Mary Ann

said, “Stress can't happen when you laugh. Laughing is something that will take stressful moments and turn

them into ease. Also, when everything is coming the wrong way, you are probably in the wrong lane.” The

Leisure portion came with a challenge. Mary Ann wanted members to stop dwelling on the negative points and

dwell on the good points. In order to do that, she encouraged all members to jot three things down that we do

well. She finished by having us ask ourselves the question of “Why am I here at DKG?” We need to jump in

with both feet and utilize the organization for all it is.

After a wonderful roast beef lunch provided by Lea Ann Walley, Pam Bond, 2nd

Vice President, gave

the Rosebud Award to Kristi Carlson, the Rose-in-Bloom to Becky Richard, and the High Attendance Award to

Alpha Alpha Chapter. Alpha Alpha also gave the 2013 District Meeting invitation by singing a song about

aprons and encouraging the NE District to put on their aprons and come to Bastrop next year. Finally, the close

of the meeting came with the singing of the Delta Kappa Gamma song by all. It was an enlightening and

inspiring meeting.

On November 3, 2012, Ruth Autin and the ladies of Alpha Delta chapter hosted the South District Meeting.

Seventy-one members enjoyed a wonderful meeting at The Four Columns in Harvey. A patriotic theme helped

prepare everyone for the Presidential election. Author Patricia Brady entertained everyone with the story of

Andrew and Rachel Jackson. Good food, fun, and fellowship were enjoyed by all in attendance.

WOW!! Eighty seven ladies met on Saturday, October 27, 2012 in the quaint town of Bogalusa for the

Southeast District Meeting. Little did we know that we would have a COLD start to our day with the

temperature dipping down into the low 40’s. However, the cool weather did not stop the ladies of the Southeast

District.

We began our day at the historic Bogalusa City Hall which was an absolutely beautiful building to start our

day. Charles Mizell, Mayor of the City of Bogalusa, was there to give greetings to the fabulous ladies of the SE

District. We then traveled to Cassidy Park to tour both the Pioneer and Indian Culture Museums. Both

museums were fabulous. We then traveled to the Elizabeth Sullivan Memorial United Methodist Church where

we held our General Session and the Fellowship Hall was beautifully decorated with fall colors. While we

enjoyed a delicious meal, DKG members were entertained with beautiful piano music as a delightful pianist

played for us during our meal.

Beta Rho chapter did a wonderful job planning and implementing our 2012 SE District Meeting which was a

huge success. All ladies of the SE District were treated to a memorable experience.
