High School Gymnasium

Baccalaureate A special Baccalaureate service has been planned for our 2014 graduates, their families and friends. It will be held on Thursday evening, May 15, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School gymnasium. Local church-es from the L-M school communities are sponsor-ing this evening of music and challenge in honor of the graduating seniors in the district. Seniors will be asked to wear their caps and gowns and will be seated together as a class for this special service. Our speaker this year was a standout basketball player in high school, college and played professional basketball for 10 years. In high school, his team (of which he was captain) too 3rd place at state and he

earned First Team All-State and Converse All-Amer-ican honors. He was a 4 year starter in college where he set many records for free throws, field goals and scored over 1,000 points. He has received hall of Fame honors from college, high school, and the Iowa High School Association. As ministers in your communities, we encourage graduating seniors, their families and friends to plan to attend and enjoy this memorable evening togeth-er. All L-M High school students are invited to the Grandview Community Bible Church “Friendship Center” following the service for pizza, snacks and an opportunity to visit with our special guest.

BLOOD DRIVE RESULTSThe High School Student Council would like to thank everyone that came and donated at the blood drive on March 12th. Eighty-five units of blood were donated, saving 255 lives.

YEARBOOKSThe 2013-2014 High School Yearbook is on sale now for $47. You can purchase the yearbook in the high school office or online at: jostensyearbooks.com 2013-2014 Junior High Yearbooks will go on sale in March. Order forms will be sent home with junior high students at that time. Order forms will need to be returned to the high school office with the payment of $15. Both of the 2013-2014 L-M yearbooks will arrive some-

time in the first two weeks of September 2014.

L-M ATHLETIC BOOSTERS L-M Athletic Boosters would like to thank everyone that helped in the concession stand during the winter sports season. Without volunteers like you we would not be able to run the stand to raise money for the sports programs and our athletes. We would also like to thank all our Booster sponsors. With donations from the membership drive, we helped fund the new cam-era/viewing system at the high school. This system includes 3 cameras in the gym that project

the games onto TVs in the concession stand and lobby and the big screen in the cafeteria. The cafeteria screen is also used for various school announcements, activities and events, such as showing the state wrestling tourna-ment when an L-M athlete was wrestling, videos that L-M students have made, public service announcements and school announcements. Possible future projects might include an ice bath for athletes, new curtain in the gym that could be raised and lowered, replacing the flag in the gym with a roll-up one suspended from the ceil-ing. Without your support, none of this would be possible. Thank you so much for the support and donations!

NURSE NEWS

2nd grade parents: It will be mandatory for all students en-tering 3rd grade for the 2014-2015 school year to have an eye exam completed and documentation on file at school. A letter and the green Student Vision Card was mailed home before winter break. These will need to be completed and returned to the school nurse prior to the 2014-2015 school year. 6th grade parents: It is mandatory for all students entering 7th grade to have proof of a Tdap (tetanus, diptheria, pertussis) vaccine prior to the start of the 2014-2015 school year. Letters were distributed at parent teacher conferences. If you received a letter this vaccine will need to be done and an up to date vaccine record will need to be turned in to the school nurse prior to the 2014-2015 school year. 8th grade parents: It is mandatory for all students entering 9th grade to have proof of a dental screening within the past year. Please watch for the dental letter and screening certificate to arrive in the mail soon. This will need to be completed and returned to the school nurse prior to the 2014-2015 school year.

OPEN ENROLLMENT DEADLINES Pursuant to the laws that govern open enrollment, applications filed after March 1, 2014 for the 2014-2015 school year will not be approved unless the reason for late filing qualifies for “good cause”. “Good cause” means a change in the status of a child’s resident district for any of the reasons listed below. The deadline for kindergarten students is September 1. s Family moved to a new district of residence s Change in the marital status of the student’s parents s Placement of the student into foster care resulting in new resident district s Adoption resulting in new resident district s Participation in a foreign exchange program s Participation in a substance abuse or mental health treatment program resulting in new resident districts Failure of negotiations for reorganization or rejection of proposed reorganization plan

s Failure of negotiations for whole grade sharing or rejection of whole grade sharing s Loss of accreditation or revocation of a charter school contract s Severe health and/or pervasive harassment (If the application is being made in response to an alleged severe health need or pervasive harassment of student, the RESIDENT district will notify the applicant of status. The applicant must provide resident district with status of health concern or history of harassment occurring after March 1 deadline.)

6th GRADE LEADERSHIPThis fall, 6th graders were invited to start participating in leadership groups. Mrs. Feldman, Mr. Casper, and Mrs. Shady orga-nized groups based on skills students would need to develop for junior high. These groups focus on service learning projects, learning from other positive role models, and practicing leadership skills with other students. The positive impact from these leadership groups can be seen throughout the school. The completed service learning projects include: food drive collection for local families, military collection of items sent to servicemen and women overseas, collection of items for the Muscatine Ani-mal Shelter, and most recently a coin collec-tion that raised over $1,300 for Jump Rope for Heart. Sixth graders work to choose, or-ganize, and carry out these service-learning projects from start to finish.

Sixth graders sponsored a Toy and Book Drive at the Elementary school for the month of March. The collected items will be donated back to families in the L-M com-munity at the PTO carnival on April 4th. Students are also hoping to donate items to the UIHC Children’s Hospital. If you have gently used items to donate, you may send them with an elementary student or bring them to the elementary office. Please look for more great things to come!

‘Shop on a Dime’The Letts United

Methodist Church has a ‘Shop on a Dime’

store that offers FREE clothing and other

items. We welcome anyone to come and

browse and if you find something, please to take it. The store is open every morning through the week

from 9:00-11 :00 a.m.

and on Saturdays too. The store is located on the main floor of

the church.

After School Program

on MondaysThe Letts Church has an after school pro-gram for boys and

girls in grades K-5 on Monday afternoons from 2:30 to 5:00

p.m. We will be doing homework, and having snacks and activities as time permits. If

Iowa Core - Myth vs. Fact

bMyth: The federal government developed the Common Core State Standards. bFACT: The federal government did not play a role in developing

the Common Core. For years, states independently developed their own standards. Over time, state leaders recognized that many students were graduating from high school un-prepared for the demands of college and careers. In 2007, state education leaders began discussing the idea of working together to develop a set of rigorous academic expectations for English/language arts and math to ensure all students finish high school prepared for the next step. In 2009, governors and state edu-cation chiefs from 48 states engaged in a bipartisan collaboration toward this goal. The states worked with teachers, parents, content experts and others to develop and release the Common Core. Forty-five states, the District of Columbia and four territories have adopted the Common Core State Standards. bMyth: The Iowa State Board of Education did not have the authority to adopt the Common Core as part of the Iowa Core. bFACT: Iowa, through authority vested in the State Board of Education by the Iowa Leg-islature, adopted the Common Core State Standards in 2010 and blended them with our state standards. State board authority is provided by Iowa Code Chapter 256.7(26). bMyth: Iowa is receiving federal funding to implement the Common Core. bFACT: Iowa receives no federal money to implement the Common Core as part of the Iowa Core. The Iowa Department of Education has a $2 million state appropriation for fiscal year 2014 to support the work of Iowa Core implementation. bMyth: Iowa has adopted a federal curriculum. bFACT: The Common Core State Standards set common, rigorous expectations for what students should know and be able to do, but leave decisions about teaching and lesson plans up to local schools and teachers. bMyth: Implementing the standards requires states to collect and share vast amounts of personally identifiable student information. bFACT: Implementing the standards does not require data collection. The Iowa Depart-ment of Education collects student data and information to learn how schools in Iowa are changing, to follow the academic progress of students from preschool to high school, and to guide efforts to improve our education system. Data help teachers and parents gauge whether students are on track from year to year and whether they graduate ready for success in college and careers. This information is used to detect and report shifts in student populations and demographics and student achievement results, such as high school graduation rates, attendance rates, and state assessment scores. Under No Child Left Behind and other federal laws, data, such as test scores, are provided to the federal government. Students are never identified by name. bMyth: The Common Core prevents teachers from teaching literature. bFACT: The standards do not limit reading to non-fiction, but strike a balance between literature and non-fiction so students build knowledge and broaden their perspectives.
