Breast Cancer Awareness Month

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encour-age others to do the same.

o

Start an early detention plan

1 Perform a Breast-Self Exam - Women should perform a self breast-exam each month and any chang-es or abnormalities should be discussed with a doctor or physician

2 Get a Mammogram once a year - A mammo-gram is an x-ray that allows a qualif ied specialist to exam-ine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas. The breast is exposed to a small dose of iodizing radiation that produces an image of the breast tissue.

3 Get a clinical breast exam - A clinical breast exam is performed by a healthcare professional who is trained to recognize many different types of abnormalities and warning signs. This in-off ice exam will most likely be completed by your family physician or gynecologist at your annual exam.

BreastCancer Facts

Yudi is a previvor of breast cancer. This means that she overcame a genetic condition by taking the decision of dealing with this evil disease before having it. At the age of 29 she had both of her breasts extirpated and plans to have a hysterectomy in the future. Many of you may think that this

was a radical decision, but you need to learn her story first to understand what made her do it.

I’mPrevivor

a

Yudi, how did it all start?

Y: Everything started the day that I felt a small lump on my breast and I decid-ed to go to the doctor. I needed to get a sonogram and a mammogram because of my family’s history of cancer. Two of my aunts and my mom died of breast cancer, leaving me with only one aunt who has been struggling with breast cancer for 8 years. The results of the sonogram and mammo-gram showed that I had four cysts and micro calcifications. I had a biopsy to rule out that it was cancer and then my doctors recommended that I take the BRACA test.

What is the BRACA test exactly?

Y: The BRACA test basically determines if a person has a genetic anomaly associated with breast cancer. The results test told me that I had a 85% chance of having breast cancer and 45% of ovary cancer. I did the test at Florida Hospital here in the United States, even though I was living in Dominican Republic at that time.

And from those result you decided to have a mastectomy?

Y: When I had the test results my doctors recommended that I have a

double mastectomy and a breast reconstruction. When I have kids I will have a hysterectomy.

But what made you decide to do it?

Y: My cousins and I grew up without our mothers; we saw how they strug-gled with the disease and then were not able to overcome it. My mom died when she was 34 years old and, even though I was only 4 I remember every-thing. If God is giving me the opportu-nity to save my life; an opportunity that my love ones didn’t have, then why wouldn’t I do it? And yes, I was scared but it was worse to think about having cancer.

Where you worried at all?

Y: At first I had my doubts about the surgery because it is hard to have your breasts removed, I worried about how it was going to look after the surgery. I asked my family and closest friends their opinions and some of them told me to do it and others said not to do it. Some asked me why… It is hard to have your breast removed without having cancer, but I told them that it was going to be harder to have cancer and see the metamorphosis that one suffers. Was it drastic? No. I had valuable information and I had to

take action. My sister and my cousin also have that same gen, and we support each other. We are trying to change our story; we don’t want cancer to claim us.

If the BRACA test had shown a lower probability of getting cancer, would you have done it?

Y: I think I would have, I am scared of cancer. I believe it is an opportunity that science is giving us, that we have to be cautious. It was a relief for me to have both of my breasts removed. I don’t have that fear that I had every-time I had to have a sonogram which is was every six months. I don’t have to wait for cancer to show up in my medi-cal exams.

The BRACA gene test is oered only to people who are likely to

have an inherited mutation, based on personal or family history, or who have specic

types of breast cancer

DID YOU KNOW

e work 40 years of our lives for money. Don’t you think that if it takes us so many years to make money, we should be aware of our spending habits? most people spend a year planning a wedding for an event that is going to last just 4 hours. What about making time for what is going to take 40 years of your life?

Take control of your finances! Developing good discipline on how to manage your cash flow will lead you to FINANCIAL INDEPEN-DENCE. How great does that sound? It is easy and simple. Living within a budget is the most relaxing and joyful way of living there is. This is the 1st PILLAR to start building your wealth. Don’t you want to be wealthy? Let’s do this!!

W

What is a BUDGET?

Total Income - Total Expenses = 0Every dollar must have a name!

Yes ladies, it is possible to buy shoes and purses every month if you stay on budget and your income permits it! Include it as part of the budget but do not forget to be frugal. We are living in a very hectic environment and that is why we need to be efficient with time and know beforehand how we are going to invest our money wisely.

Make it a family matter. At the beginning of each month sit all your family members down and talk about all your household expenses and look for areas where you can adjust expenses. For example, eating out too many times; you can start to take lunch from your house to work.

The Golden Rule is: “Pay yourself first”. SAVE at least 10%, 15% or 20% of your income every month.

Log your expenses every day, so you can go over them and see your spending habits. It is important to do this because it will help you stay on track.

For you to have an idea, your budget should be divided in these main areas:

1st Pillar

5 For those other expenses use the envelope system (using cash money for the amounts established in the budget for groceries, clothing and entertainment). Never use your debit or credit cards for these expenses. When doing groceries, do a 2 week menu. Make a list of the ingredients that you need. Bring a calculator and remember: only take cash!

What was the hardest part?

Learning to adapt. I lost a lot of sensibility and I won’t be able to breast feed my kids in the future. The worst part was when I woke up from surgery and saw my breasts for the first time. They were swollen, it looked like they had no shape and with scars. Thank God now they look great. At first I was depressed most of the time, but now everytime I look at my scars I think “well, these scars are from a battle against cancer that I won and I am proud of having them”. Today I can say that I never had breast cancer and that I will never have it.

A survivor that had her breast and uterus removed once said that she did not know if she was a woman anymore, what would you tell her?

Our breasts do not define us as women; we are so much more than body parts. It is hard to have them removed, but she has to know that not having them doesn’t mean that we are not women anymore, it means that we are survivors.

What message can you leave the readers?

Touch your breast! Examine them often and get a mam-mogram at least once a year. You can prevent breast cancer to appear or to spread further. Know that there is a test that saves lives. You are not alone.
