    WELCOME TO 2014!

December and January got off to a slow, cold start but festive Holidayparties and family celebrations dominated our time. Then, we werecaught in the grip of an Polar Vortex resulting in record breaking low

temperatures throughout Middle Tennessee. Even under theseconditions we still performed some surface patrols during the monthof January. We also had a great Change of Watch in December with somany members receiving awards for their special efforts during 2013.

The theme for this short article is goals, Im challenging all of theFlotilla Commanders to set goals for your flotilla in 2014. We all needgoals to insure that we get to where we want to be.

Below are ten goals the Vice Commander and I have set for Division11 in 2014, please read them so that we're allon the same page.

We have entered a New Year and transitioned into ournew leadership roles. Your re-elected DivisionCommander (DCDR) Jack Wood has taken the helm fora second term and is eager to get things started.

The first item on his to-do list was to set theDirection for the Division, also known as goal setting.

The goals you set for yourself and the members youlead have the potential to dramatically impact themorale, direction, and accomplishments of your flotilla. They may set your flotilla steaming hard on a coursethat will last far into the future.

Prior to attending the Flotilla Leadership Course(FLC) aimed at Flotilla Commanders (FCs) and FlotillaVice Commanders (VFCs) and set for February 22nd,you may use the Coast GuardsSMART Method of goalsettingto establish five to ten specific goals you want to

accomplish this year. FCs will discuss your goals duringthe upcoming Flotilla Leadership Course.

Please remember that you are not alone in your newposition. Utilize your Flotilla Staff Officers (FSOs),Division Staff Officers (SOs) and your elected chain ofleadership (see list on PAGE 9) for help and guidancealong the way. DCDR Jack Wood, Division ViceCommander (VDCR) Jimmy Helton as well as ourDistrict Captain - South (DCAPT) Randy Ventress arealways an email or phone call away and will doanything they can to make your term as an elected orappointed leader a most successful one.

Another item on the Commanders to-do list is tostress how important it is to prepare yourself beforeattending the upcoming Flotilla Leadership Course.FLC co-instructor Randy Ventress suggests to get acopy of the Flotilla Procedures Manual to review that.He also suggests going online and completing theAuxiliary Administrative Procedures Course (APC).

Passing the APC, prior to nomination for an electedoffice, is one of the requirements to hold that position inthe Flotilla.

Access to the online course is available at the CoastGuard Auxiliary - Online Classroom. After reviewing

the course you will need to visit theNational TestingCenterto take the Administrative Procedures Course(APC) exam online.

I cannot place enough emphasis on knowing all aperson can know about the organization to be asuccessful leader, without this knowledge they cannotbe effective.- Randy Ventress, District Captain-South.

As a newly elected VFC, I am truly thankful theFLC is being made available early in the year and lookforward to attending. by Timm Meunier, 11-04

There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of

power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are

messengers of overwhelming grief...and unspeakable love.

The glass is invertedthey cannottoast with us tonight

    The Biblerepresents the strength gained

through faith to sustain us as weremember and never forget their

    dedicated presence

A slice of lemonon the plate is to remind usof the bitter fate of those missing and that we

should be forever appreciative of their serviceand friendship.

    The tablecloth is white

symbolizing the purity of theirmotives when asked to serve in anycapacity.

The table is roundto show oureverlasting concern for ourmissing members and friends.

The single red rose, displayed in a

vase, reminds us of the life of each ofour missing members who kept thefaith by their dedication, educationand service.

The vaseis tied with a red ribbon, symbolof our continued determination to always

NEW YEAR, NEW NEWSLETTER, NEW EDITOR, NEW GOALS...

The first section of Chapter 1 Publication Officers Guide 2008Edition 2 states the following:

It is no easy task to produce a printed and/or electronic publication thatis both informative and interesting.

But many Auxiliary unit Publications Officers achieve this goal. AllPublications Officers labor under the restraints of limited resources little orno budget, inadequate access to duplication, too little time, limited help, anda want of timely, well-written articles for publication.

The successful Publications Officer finds ways to overcome theselimitations. A good editor is one who makes editing of a publication apersonal learning experience; one who experiments; who learns frommistakes; who is always looking for new ways of presenting material; who

likes their volunteer job; and who believes that job can be done better.

Amid another Polar Vortex and record low temperaturesthroughout Middle Tennessee, the 27th AnnualNashville Boat and Sportshow saw a huge increase atthe gate and steady foot traffic through the entire four-day show that wrapped on Sunday January 26th. Withattendance up 23 percent from 2013, it was the bestattended Nashville Boat Show in history.

This years show attracted 22,662 attendees. This year we had the highest attendance in the showshistory and we are thrilled the show produced heavytraffic and more importantly, buyers for our exhibitors. We hope the boat show results are a positive sign forMiddle Tennessee recreational boating and theindustry, said Kim Muncy, the show manager.

Returning to the show was Paddlefest, hosted by Canoe

Kentucky, providing attendees a chance to try outkayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards in a large on-site pool. It has become one of the most populardemonstrations at the show as interest in those sportshas increased in recent years. Kim also added: BecauseMiddle Tennessee is full of small rivers and waterwaysthat are ideal for paddle boats, coupled with an active-lifestyle population, as expected Paddlefest drew a lotof attention again this year,

New Boat Sales Are Up Sharply. Our dealers reported more than 100 major sales andalmost $5 million in product sold, Patrick Deal VP -

Sales and Marketing said in a statement. Dealers sawmany buyers coming back for a second or third lookand then purchase, indicating a change in their current

For a lot of flotillas, the monthlynewsletter is the grown-upequivalent of "busy work" that wegot from substitute teachers in our

school days. Flotilla Commandershave a vague sense that thenewsletter is something they need, although they aren't exactly surewhy, or what it's really meant toaccomplish.

A flotilla newsletter can be agreat resource or a huge waste oftime and energy. The differenceusually isn't about the type ofmissions you completed, or yourbudget, but the mindset you bring toregular communications with your

members and to the public at large.

TO HELP YOU GET STARTED,HERE ARE THREE GOODGOALS FOR YOUR FLOTILLANEWSLETTER:

    1. TO ACTUALLY SHARENEWS AND PROGRESS.

What's happening in yourFlotilla? Who has been appointed? What new programs and initiativeshave been launched? What new

goals have been set for the future? These are all things that matter tothe people who give you their time, energy, money and attention so don'tbe shy about sharing importantdetails with them. The mostimportant part of the newsletter is"news," and your Flotilla probablyhas lots to talk about.

    2. TO INSPIRE MEMBERINVOLVEMENT.

Next to actual events anddevelopments, the second most

important ingredient in your flotillanewsletter is a subtle invitation toget involved. If you can showmembers and our Program Partnershow others have had fun, or madeprogress for an important cause, bygiving a little of their time andmoney, then others will want tofollow the example. Thesesuggestions don't have to be overt;you just want to let readers knowthat what they give to you time orotherwise makes a huge

    difference.

    3. TO STAY ON THE MINDS OFYOUR MEMBERS &PARTNERS.

There is definitely some truth tothe idea that the "squeaky wheelgets the grease." In other words, being in touch with members everymonth, and including a very shortappeal for volunteerism, isn't a badidea. That's especially true these

days, when there are moreorganizations than ever vying for thesame pieces of a shrinking pie. Yournewsletter can be a positivemotivator for your members andProgram Partners -Timm Meunier,11-04

    THE BLIND SIDE

The movie, The Blind Side, byDirector: John Lee Hancock hasbeen enjoyed by massiveaudiences around the world anddeservingly so with itsinspirational portrait of footballstar Michael Oher (played by

Quinton Aaron) and the Oscarwinning performance of SandraBullock, playing his adoptivemother Leigh Anne Tuohy.

If you havent yet seen thismovie, see it as soon as you can. Itis an outstanding movie all roundand especially for leaders, it is animportant reminder to watch theirown blind side too. Often for aFlotilla Commander (FC) their blindside is missing the understanding of

their individual members. The challenge of understanding

your members isnt an isolatedexample like with with MichaelOhers college coach. Instead, misunderstanding is often the normfor an FC and my own researchshows that this is the number onechallenge for a new FC. Having a

deep level understanding of yourmembers is what differentiates thegreat FCs. These FCs invest timeand resources to ensure they have adeep understanding of each of their

    members.

    Most Significant Scene:

The movie is the true story offootball star Michael Ohers life andwith the help of his adoptive familyhow he overcame great odds tograduate from college and play inthe NFL. It is a story of inspiration, resiliency, determination, naturaltalent, and the impact that caringcan make.

One of the most striking scenesin the movie is when SandraBullocks character (Michaelsadoptive mother, Leigh AnneTuohy) intervenes during footballpractice. Michael is being coachedabout his role on the team and hisblocking technique. If youve seenthe movie, Im sure youll know thescene. It is where Michaels coach, with the very best of intentions, isyelling at him, stepping inside hispersonal space, being highly

directive and very aggressive. Thecoachs message is not gettingthrough and only causing confusionin Michael. Without beingdisrespectful to the coach, it appearshis strategy to deal with Michael isto say the exact same thing again, only louder.

Leigh Anne Tuohy (played bySandra Bullock) intervenes. Sheunderstands football, she knowswhat Michaels role is on the teamand most importantly, she knowsMichael. She walks past the coachto Michael on the field. She explainsto him how his role on the team is toprotect the quarterback in the sameway he protects his family.

She creates the link. Michaelsfamily on the field is his team.Essentially, she puts the message in

a language and context Michael canunderstand. Its the turning point inthe movie and the final exchange inthis scene is between the coach andLeigh Anne Tuohy, when she says,

Coach, you need to get to knowyour players.

Understanding your membersgives you a window into how tocommunicate, build an effectiveenvironment for them, assist them tobuild on their strengths andovercome their weaknesses. MostFCs already do this to some extent. The best FCs do this to the deepestlevel.

I will end this article with a

question for each of Division 11sFlotilla Commanders:Do you knowyour members?- Timm Meunier,11-04

In the Coast Guard Auxiliary, the phrase chain of leadership and management

describes a system of communication and responsibility providing for an effective and

efficient path for relaying information through all organizational levels. The process is best

    USCG AUXILIARY DIVISION 11, DISTRICT 8ER - NASHVILLE, TN JANUARY 31, 2014

    LOUD HAILER - JANUARY 2014 PAGE 10

I didnt go into my first flotilla meeting of 2014expecting to be an amazing instructor right aftercompleting the Instructor Development Course.

I went in understanding that not every instructor is

perfect because perfection is impossible, and that everyinstructor gets better with every class they teach. I knewthat I was probably going to make a mistake or six, butthat each mistake would make me a better instructor. Iwas okay with knowing that I might mess up thesequence that I had planned, and that I might mix upmy PowerPoint slides (I did). I was actually okay withshowing my vulnerability to these people I didnt know, because it takes a considerable amount of courage tostand up in front of a class and pour your heart and soulinto a class. I knew that showing this side of me wouldpossibly allow me to connect with members on a deeperlevel, (it did) and thats what I really wanted. I didntexpect to make a huge impact on every single person Iinstruct, just to someone who might have needed it themost.

    Overcoming the Butterflies

All that being said, I was still a nervous wreck allday knowing that I was going to stand in front of agroup of people that I respect and ask them toparticipate in Member Training with me. And eventhough I tried my hardest not to put this pressure onmyself, thats definitely easier said than done. Itsterrifying to stand in front of people and try to connectwith them on a mental level. Add to that the preparation

work necessary to teach a class and its no wonder whyyou truly have to be passionate and knowledgable aboutyour material to be an effective instructor. You need tocreate a class that flows in a logical order, propertheme-ing, controlling your voice, making sure theclassroom is comfortable, creating a a tempo thatmatches the hard points of your class material, ensuringthat youre coaching students properly in the rightareas, drawing your students in, accommodating thevarious levels of knowledge in your class, demonstrating while trying to talk at the same timethe list goes on and on!

Im really not trying to make this sound like thehardest task ever. Instructing just happens to be anorganic and sometimes overwhelming process. There isSO much more to instructing than standing in front of a

class, asking students questions or to participate insomething that now comes naturally to me.

Especially when youre so emotionally invested inthe material, instructing is not something that you takelightly. I never realized how much went behind a classuntil I attended training but now my mind has beenblown with how much time and effort goes behind aclass. When your instructor stands in front of you, sheor he is pouring their heart out to you with somethingtheyre so passionate about. Remember AuxiliaryInstructors are not getting paid money for what they do.

    Overcoming The Curve Balls:

After preparing everything, I arrived to find ourregular meeting room completely empty, no tables, andfew chairs? This was also my first night as the newlyelected Flotilla Vice Commander (so no pressure). We (18 members and guests) were forced to meet in a15 X 25 conference room with little ventilation and nooptions for the projector I needed for my PowerPointslides. Luckily, I had printed off 12 handouts foreveryone and adjusted my instruction to fit the needs ofthe small class space. I am proud to report that weachieved 100% student participation by instructorinitiated questions, student lead reading activities and agroup feedback session.

I closed the class by asking students based on whatI have presented you with here tonight, where are WEas a flotilla? The answers were outstanding with 60%of the members responding without reservation thatFlotilla 11-04 was PERFORMING while 40% could notdecide between PERFORMING and NORMING. New11-04 member Michael Simpson added, "I heard thiswas a flotilla of performers and thats why I joined."

So thats how my first block of instruction went! After all of the heartache, intensive training, and thisexhilarating experience of instructing for the first time,I am now on my way to becoming a US Coast Guard

Auxiliary Qualified Instructor. I was a glass case ofemotions that night but it still ended up being anexperience of pure thrill for me, thank you for theopportunity. - Timm Meunier, 11-04

Im going to coin the phrase; Enablingthe Success of Others as my Instructors

    Mantra. Timm Meunier

I WAS A GLASS CASE OF EMOTIONS THAT NIGHT BUT IT STILL ENDED UP BEING ANEXPERIENCE OF PURE THRILL FOR ME.
