Lotto NRFL 2015 Welcome

With the latest round of the Chatham Cup out of the way and the dust having settled on the FIFA U-20 World Cup, we now finally have a full schedule of Lotto NRFL action to look forward to with complete rounds taking place in all four divisions. The business end of the season is rapidly approaching so the play is sure to be fiercely contested this weekend as the jostle for promotion and battle to avoid the drop continues. There are many stand out matches in store, such as defending champions Forrest Hill-Milford heading to fellow title contenders Glenfield Rovers in the Women’s Premier and a pair of local derbies in the men’s Premier League with Bay Olympic hosting Waitakere City and East Coast Bays making the short trip to Glenfield. In the other divisions, there are some real six-pointers in the relegation fight as Manurewa and Waiuku face off in Division One while Claudelands Rovers meet Papatoetoe in Division Two. In the programme this week, we preview these games and all others, as well as featuring photos from Phototek of two recent matches. In the spotlight were Fencibles United’s 2-1 win over Te Atatu in Division Two and Glenfield Rovers’ 3-0 success against Western Springs in the Women’s Premier. As always, we also have all the up-to-date tables, team progress graphs, golden boot charts and squads so there is a wealth of info at your fingertips! Our Lotto NRFL social media platforms continue to be the place to go for all score updates, results, goal details and other news - be sure to tag us @LottoNRFL with your updates from the sideline! Programme 2015

Central United vs Hamilton Wanderers

Kiwitea Street | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Fisher Assistant Referees: James Ashford, Tony Wall

Central coach José Figueira received some good news this week when he was appointed coach of the Auckland City youth team and will hope to put the icing on the cake with a victory on Saturday. Hamilton are one of the title favourites though and a win here could put them back on the top of the table so fourth-placed Central are in for a real test.

Three Kings United vs Onehunga Sports Keith Hay Park | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Bruce Horrox Assistant Referees: Rajesh Kumar, Pat Barrett

These sides experienced contrasting fortunes in the Chatham Cup last weekend, Onehunga being knocked out by Central while Three Kings went on the goal rampage with a 6-2 success over Division Two Oratia. Top scorer Allan Pearce is now back in action for Three Kings after being unavailable during the U-20 World Cup – he was the New Zealand team’s physio – and scored a hat-trick in the cup, as did Dylan Manickum.

Eastern Suburbs vs Western Springs Madills Farm | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Cory Mills Assistant Referees: Bruce McGrath, Faiyaz Ali

Springs will have a fresh set of legs after sitting out last weekend while Suburbs will be on a high after a 4-1 win over Division One title chasers North Shore in the cup. The hosts will be favourites as they are sharing first place with Glenfield but Springs are in outstanding form after stringing together five wins on the trot so an upset is very much a realistic outcome.

Glenfield Rovers vs East Coast Bays McFetridge Park | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Martin Neale Assistant Referees: John McCoskrie, Chris Farnell

Glenfield were involved in the only Premier match to take place last weekend and took full advantage with a 2-1 win over Bay Olympic. That result took them back to the top but only by the slimmest of margins (they’ve scored one more goal than Eastern Suburbs). With Hamilton just a point behind, Rovers therefore need to keep winning and games like this against bottom-half sides must be three-pointers. The form book often goes on the window in derbies though.

Bay Olympic vs Waitakere City Olympic Park | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Owens Assistant Referees: Ravi Prasad, Dominic Hopkirk

The best in the west are set to do battle here with local pride on the line. There’s every chance there won’t be a western derby in the top flight next season as Waitakere are looking odds on for relegation and there are no teams from the area in the Division One promotion hunt. This could therefore be Bay Olympic’s last chance to make an impact on a local rival for a while and they will want to do better than the point they picked up at Fred Taylor Park earlier in the season.

Birkenhead United vs Melville United Shepherds Park | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Hayden Tutbury Assistant Referees: Chris Casey, Khalid El Gana

Birkenhead have a real fight on their hands to repeat last season’s runners-up placing and certainly cannot afford to slip up against a side propping up the table. Melville received another blow to their confidence with a loss at home to Division One Tauranga in the cup last weekend while Birkenhead received a welcome boost after beating neighbours Forrest Hill-Milford 3-1.

Papatoetoe vs Fencibles United

Murdoch Park | Friday 3 July | Kick-off: 7pm | Referee: Mark Fleming Assistant Referees: Faiyaz Ali, Brandon Day

This battle of the bottom pits together two sides desperate to start salvaging something from their seasons after enduring horrific runs of form. The pair have just three wins to show between them and suffered further punishment last weekend, Papatoetoe falling 4-1 to Norwest while Fencibles were handed an 8-0 thumping by Glenfield. If Fencibles do not claim the points in this one then it seems they can all but kiss their NRFL status goodbye.

Three Kings United vs Norwest United Keith Hay Park | Sunday 5 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Neil Tobin Assistant Referees: Allan Tobin, Dave Doidge

These sides will both be in good spirits after posting pleasing results in the previous round, Three Kings picking up a point at leaders Claudelands while Norwest earned that comprehensive win over Papatoetoe with Nicole Cooper scoring twice. Samantha Waru has been a stand out for Norwest all season and now has six goals to her name. Three Kings are seven points off the top four and need to win to avoid that gap blowing out.

Lynn-Avon United vs Claudelands Rovers

Ken Maunder Park | Sunday 5 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Wendy McNeely Assistant Referees: Reza Al Rabea, Fernando Karam

Remarkably, Claudelands’ sharing of the points with Three Kings was their first draw of the season and they will be keen to prove that was just a blip. With two of their closest rivals – Glenfield and Forrest Hill – playing each other, this is an excellent opportunity for the leaders to open up some ground on at least one of the chasers so they need to make sure they take full advantage. The last time Lynn-Avon won was back in the eighth round.

Glenfield Rovers vs Forrest Hill-Milford United

McFetridge Park | Sunday 5 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Chris Farnell Assistant Referees: Kristian Klette, Charles Nothnagel

This is without doubt the game of the round and could have big ramifications in the race for the title. With four teams genuinely in the running, this is the closest and most exciting title chase in the women’s game for years and there will be a string of other tense encounters as the finale approaches. With Claudelands likely to beat Lynn-Avon, each of these sides will be in great need of the points so the action is sure to be fiercely fought.

Western Springs vs Eastern Suburbs

Seddon Fields | Sunday 5 July | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Chris McDermott Assistant Referees: Hilary Osborne, Tanvir Bhamji

Of the four title contenders, Springs are the dark horses and will be looking to climb above the loser of the key Glenfield-Forrest Hill clash with a victory here. There is likely to be plenty of feeling in this one as there are strong links between the teams, the majority of last season’s Suburbs squad having followed coach Rico Wilson to Western Springs. The Suburbs players will be keen to reverse the outcome of the earlier meeting between the pair, which resulted in a 1-0 win to Springs.

50 Years of Local Pride

Programme 2015

Metro vs Ellerslie

Phyllis Street | Friday 3 July | Kick-off: 7.30pm | Referee: Rajesh Kumar Assistant Referees: Ben Hill, Wandyk Freitas

Both sides will be raring to go after putting their feet up last weekend so this encounter should start at a hectic pace. With a clear top two now having emerged, third-placed Ellerslie are facing an uphill battle to haul themselves into the promotion reckoning and securing a win here is therefore vital. It appears the best Metro can hope for is upper mid-table.

Forrest Hill-Milford United vs Ngaruawahia United Becroft Park | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Allan Wilson Assistant Referees: Peter Lamb, Steve Merriman

After being turfed out of the cup by Birkenhead, Forrest Hill can now focus their full attentions on earning promotion. But the same can also be said of title rivals North Shore so there is not much of a silver lining to the cup defeat. With Shore facing a tricky-looking trip to Hibiscus Coast, Forrest Hill have a chance to leap frog the leaders so must make sure they dispose of cellar dwellers Ngaruwahia.

Manurewa vs Waiuku Memorial Park | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Ben Norman Assistant Referees: Michael Dale, Eric Yu

This southern derby is vital to both sides’ prospects of staying in the division as they are each dangerously close to the drop zone. Manurewa’s loss to Mt Albert last Friday was made much worse when second-from-bottom Takapuna earned a win the next day, leaving the south Auckland outfit just one point ahead. Waiuku are on the same number of points as Manurewa but have a game in hand so a win here would be of huge significance.

Hibiscus Coast vs North Shore United Stanmore Bay Park | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Vaughan Couillault Assistant Referees: Richard Middleton, Johanna O’Connor

North Shore have become accustomed to winning – they have lost only twice and somehow recorded no draws so far – so the cup defeat to Eastern Suburbs will have stung them. The manner of the 4-1 loss will also have concerned coach Paul Temple as Shore pride themselves on their defending and have conceded fewer goals than any other men’s team in the entire NRFL. They will need to go back to their miserly ways against a side that has little trouble finding the net.

Mangere United vs Takapuna Centre Park | Sunday 5 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: James Ashford Assistant Referees: Thomas Lee, Charlie Tseng

Mangere would expect to beat a team battling against relegation but received a stark reminder that league positioning can count for little in the cup last weekend, needing extra time and a double from Sanni Issa to get past Conference side Waitemata. Takapuna will have their tails up after earning just their second win of the season, albeit

over bottom-placed Ngaruawahia, but the quality of the likes of Issa should get Mangere home.

Tauranga City United vs Mt Albert-Ponsonby Links Avenue | Sunday 5 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andrew Lamberth Assistant Referees: Paul Shakes, Brett Willis

Tauranga’s pleasing season continued with an upset win over Premier League Melville in the cup but they must be careful not to let those knockout exploits distract them from the task at hand in the league. With North Shore and Forrest Hill opening up a gap at the top, it’s going to be difficult for any other side to break into the promotion spots and Tauranga will need to embark on a great run of form to do so.

Lotto NRFL Division 1 Preview Round 14

Claudelands Rovers vs Papatoetoe

Galloway Park | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andy Holdsworth Assistant Referees: Sean Coon, Alastair Turner

Papatoetoe suffered a major blow in their fight against relegation with a 2-1 loss at home to fellow strugglers Onehunga-Mangere in the previous round and are now precariously positioned with only Lynn-Avon below them. They are therefore in real need of the points here and will take heart from Claudelands’ last performance at home, which resulted in a 5-0 humbling at the hands of North Force.

Lynn-Avon United vs Oratia United Ken Maunder Park | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Gordon Campbell Assistant Referees: Peter Caffell, Neil Tobin

With time starting to run out, it’s getting harder to see Lynn-Avon finding a way to maintain their NRFL status but mathematically they still have every chance as Papatoetoe are only two points ahead. Fellow westies Oratia are just as hungry for a win but for more positive reasons – three points could lift them into second place.

Onehunga-Mangere United vs Papakura City

Mangere Domain | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Aiden Moffatt Assistant Referees: Steve Peeters, Morgan Breuer

Things are looking up for Onehunga-Mangere after that vital victory over Papatoetoe and the new coaching combination of Nick Russo and Warren Parke will hope that can be the spring board for a run that makes their place in the division secure. Papakura are hardly the ideal team to begin that quest against however as they are flying high in the league and are still alive in the cup.

Te Atatu vs AFC Fury

Te Atatu Peninsula Park | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Carl Watkins Assistant Referees: Wendy McNeely, Riki Enosa

Maintaining their NRFL status will have been the main goal for both these sides after promotion from the local leagues so they will be pleased to be sitting safely in mid-table, seemingly free of any relegation woes and with a chance of pushing for the top four. Te Atatu made light of the lengthy trek with a 2-1 win in the corresponding fixture and Fury will be hoping to do the same to them this time.

Manukau City vs Fencibles United

Walter Massey Park | Saturday 4 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Wolken Assistant Referees: Anthony Barnes, Chris Scott

Manukau emerged on the wrong end of an epic Chatham Cup showdown against Papakura last weekend, eventually falling 4-3 in extra time. They must bounce back quickly from that heart-breaking defeat though as they are fighting for promotion with at least four other sides. Fencibles are one of those teams so this is a real six-pointer.

North Force vs Albany United

Kamo Sports Park | Sunday 5 July | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Ben Hill Assistant Referees: Michael Badham, Torres Chang

It’s been an outstanding couple of weeks for North Force, who have notched 5-0 wins in successive games – over Claudelands and Lynn-Avon respectively – and are now in second place. Their recent net-busting antics are sure to have the Albany defence worried, although the visitors are in decent form themselves after also notching back-to-back wins.
