FRoM thE DiRECtoRsI am not yours, not lost in you, Not lost, although I long to be Lost as a candle lit at noon,

Lost as a snowflake in the sea.

You love me, and I find you still A spirit beautiful and bright,

Yet I am I, who long to be Lost as a light is lost in light.

Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)

Dear Listeners,

Welcome to the Conspirare Youth Choirs winter concert, “Lost in Light”. Inspired by the passionate words of Sara Teasdale, this concert breathes with that common hope of belonging to something beyond us.

In the CYC, one of our principal goals is to inspire young artists. More than the binding of vocal technique to music literacy, it is the sharing of words and poetry, guided by the composer’s hand and revealed by the singer, that is the center of a choral artist. We hope that as we build the foundations of their technique, our singers begin to share in the singular desire to communicate the emotion and energy behind the piece, that ‘something beyond us’. As their voices intertwine with this beautiful music, we know you will be transformed during our time together this evening.

Thank you again for your presence tonight, and thank you for your support of the Conspirare Youth Choirs.

See his star shining brightIn the sky this Christmas Night!Follow me joyfully;Hurry to Bethlehem and see the son of Mary!

Angels bright, come from heaven’s highest glory,Bear the news with its message of good cheer:“Sing, rejoice, for a King is come to save us,Hurry to Bethlehem and see the son of Mary!”

See, he lies in his mother’s tender keeping;Jesus Christ in her loving arms asleep.Shepherds poor, come to worship and adore him,Offer their humble gifts before the son of Mary.

Let us all pay our homage at the manger,Sing his praise on this joyful Christmas Night;Christ is come, bringing promise of salvation;Hurry to Bethlehem and see the son of Mary!

O snow, which falls so slow,Dear earth quite warm below;O heart, so keep thy glow,Beneath the snow.

The snow must melt, must go,Fast as water flow. Not thus, my soul, O sowThy gifts to fade like snow.

2009-2010 ConsPiR ARE Youth ChoiRs highLights

The Conspirare Youth Choirs are excited to be celebrating their fifth anniversary in 2009-2010. With its largest enrollment to date of 102 singers, the CYC are proud to continue their mission of finding and inspiring talented young singers from throughout the greater Austin area.

In August, the CYC launched their season activities with a Kick-Off Clinic at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church. This three-day event was a time for returning and new singers to meet and expand their musical skills, while developing their ensemble sound. At the conclusion of Kick-Off, the CYC had their annual Family Dinner Night at the home of Ms. Revering.

During the summer, the CYC also received an exciting invitation from the Austin Lyric Opera to be invited collaborators in their 2009-2010 productions of Puccini’s “La Boheme” in the fall and Humperdink’s “Hansel and Gretel” to take place in the spring of 2010. Both productions require a children’s ensemble, and the CYC were excited to begin rehearsals and auditions for these ensembles. The selected singer for “La Boheme” had a wonderful time stepping into the world of the professional artist. Highlights of their experience included interacting with professional soloists, adult opera chorus members, stage production team, and orchestra members. They also had a fantastic experience with being fitted for costumes, developing their acting skills, and performing in the world-class Dell Hall of The Long Center.

Throughout the semester, the CYC also began preparations for their summer tour to Hawaii and the Pacific Rim Festival. The Pacific Rim Festival is an exciting nine-day festival based on the island of Oahu and is led by world-renowned music educator and Indianapolis Children’s Choir director, Henry Leck. A multi-dimensional artistic experience, singers (and their parents!) will perform native Polynesian music, learn native Polynesian dances and instrumental music, and have stimulating musical dialogue with young singers from across the United States.

Rehearsals began in September at First Presbyterian Church and both choirs have spent the semester developing high level choral skills of listening, shaping artistic phrases, and working on the essential fundamentals of pitch and rhythm.

October was filled with the inspiring outpouring of support for our CYC singers during their annual fall fundraiser.

In November, The CYC held their third “Fall into Harmony” workshop which was a Saturday filled with music-making and a fun social time for the singers. In addition to focused ensemble rehearsal time, the choirs rehearsed blocking and transitions for the winter concerts.

In December, the CYC are performing in two sold-out performances at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church. The winter concert theme and title, “Lost in Light”, was inspired by the beautiful words of the poet Sara Teasdale. They will conclude the winter season with their annual CYC Singer Appreciation Dinner at Threadgills and Nutcracker performance at The Long Center.

Looking forward to next semester, the CYC will be participating in the following events: •Aselectchildren’schorusperformanceinALO’s“HanselandGretel” •2010-2011CYCauditionstobegininspring,2010 •ACCCmusicalofferingatFirstPresbyterianChurchonMarch7,2010 •AKantoreiperformanceattheAustinMuseumofArtonMay8,2010 •TwospringconcertperformancesatSt.Martin’sLutheranChurch

AuDitioning FoR thE ConsPiR ARE Youth ChoiRsThe Conspirare Youth Choir is seeking the greater Austin area’s most talented young singers from ages 9-16. We will be auditioning for the 2010-2011 season from March-June, 2010. To schedule an audition, please visit our website at www.conspirare.org/CYC to submit an online audition request form. Additional information regarding audition materials and expectations can also be found on our website. shining stAR sChoLARshiP PRogR AMthE sChoLARshiP PRogR AM:The Conspirare Youth Choirs is fully committed to finding and training young musicians with a deep focus and love for choral singing, regardless of the obstacles that may prevent their participation. In 2006-2007, the CYC created the Shining Star Scholarship Program to support singers in the CYC. With generous donations, the CYC is currently supporting full tuition and uniform costs for three singers.

During the spring, singers who are interested in being considered for this scholarship will complete an application and participate in an audition with the Conspirare Youth Choirs. Following the audition, a scholarship committee will review the applications and audition results and select the singers who best meet the criteria of the scholarship fund based upon skill, teacher recommendations, prior musical experience, and financial need.

suPPoRt A shining stAR:Currently, we are seeking donations of $750, which will provide tuition fees, transportation costs, uniform costs, music, and rehearsal supplies for one singer for the entire 2010-2011 season (August 2010 to May 2011). We hope you will consider “adopting” a singer through the Shining Star Scholarship Program. Your tax-deductible $750 contribution to Conspirare will be a life-changing gift for one young singer who would not have this opportunity without your generosity. If a full donation of $750 is not possible for your family at the present time, we are always pleased to accept any donation amount you make to this fund.

Conspirare has the privilege of performing in a variety of beautiful venues. We seek out acoustical and aesthetic environments that can best enhance choral performances and we are deeply grateful to our hosts. While our performing venues may represent specific traditions and the texts of some of our repertoire may also be representative of specific traditions, it is in no way intended to be exclusive of any individual whose experience or set of beliefs is not represented.

Conspirare respects and celebrates the great diversity of religious, artistic, and human experiences represented among our singers and audience members. Our shared musical experiences are intended to bring us together as we all seek to be inspired by the power of great choral music. The audience creates the space in which the music is held.

CONGRATULATIONS!
