The Light Retreat Season 2018—2019

“You are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14 Bringing the Light of Christ to a Broken World

OUR LADY OF FLORIDA SPIRITUAL CENTER

For centuries church bells have been pealing forth to

welcome home the faithful and to reconnect and

rediscover the call to prayer and holiness. The bells

remind us that we are Christians and most importantly

we believe in life, transformation, joy and the

resurrection.

"Do not be afraid of holiness. It will take away none of your energy, vitality or joy," writes Pope Francis in

"Rejoice and Be Glad" his apostolic exhortation on "the

call to holiness in today's world." God calls all of us to be

saints and not plastic statues of saints, but real people,

who make time for prayer and who show loving care for

others.

Retreats offer us a time for quiet, rest and spiritual

growth. During a retreat one will experience mass and

sacraments, there also are meaningful discussions and

thought-provoking presentations and workshops on our

theme.

Pope Francis encourages us to find balance in prayer

time and "discernment," which is a gift of the Holy

Spirit. This is developed through prayer, reflection on

scripture and seeking counsel from a trusted spiritual

guide.

Come explore all that Our Lady of Florida Spiritual Center

has to offer. It is known throughout Florida for its

peaceful setting and gracious hospitality.

RETREAT THEME 2018~2019

Your Call to Holiness

Consider who you might invite to join you on a retreat

this year.

We look forward to welcoming you and your friends

with open arms here at the Spiritual Center.

Now is the time to deepen your faith, so that your faith

can be strengthened for the journey.

From the Director Florida is well known for its beautiful beaches and abundant

sunshine. Yet there are many things in Florida that people don’t

know about until a friend shows it to them. I often say this to you

when you visit here: One of the best kept secrets in Florida is Our

Lady of Florida Spiritual Center.

Unfortunately, many people don’t know about this Spiritual Center

and what we can do to enhance their lives. People come to Florida to

be refreshed physically, but the most important aspect of their lives - the refreshment of

the “SOUL” – goes unfulfilled. I need you to be Disciples of Jesus, and help change that.

Please invite one new person to join you on retreat. View this as your apostolic mission to

help bring another person closer to Christ. As I pray every morning, “Lord, let me be an

instrument to help people come to know you today, and not an obstacle that keeps people

from you.” By inviting that new person, you can be their instrument to know Christ more

fully.

I truly believe the Holy Spirit is alive and active because of the theme that we establish

each year. This year is no different; our theme is “Your Call to Holiness.” Each and every

human person feels that tug in their hearts, a tug to know God, to grow in holiness and to

become a saint.

At our Provincial Chapter in May, two of our younger Passionists renewed their temporary

vows, and God willing will make their Perpetual Vows next year. We met some of our

brothers from Puerto Rico and Haiti, which was very inspiring. But most exciting of all was

the election of our new Provincial and his council. Fr. Jim O’Shea, C.P. is our new

Provincial, Fr. Enzo Del Brocco, C.P. is 1st Consultor, Fr. Jim Price, C.P. 2nd Consultor, Fr. Bill

Murphy, C.P. is 3rd Consultor and Fr. Hugo Esparza is the 4th Consultor.

I look forward to seeing you on retreat, along with the friend you bring in response to “Your

Call to Holiness.”

Fr. Paul , C.P.

May the Passion of Jesus Christ be Always in our Hearts

Gratitude for Benefactors! Our Lady of Florida could not continue its ministry without

the generosity of you, our donors.

Some donors give for specific and practical needs, like the

installation of projection and sound equipment for the

back conference room or upgrading the main conference

room. Other donors help to add to the beauty people find

here by the installation of the marble floor in the main

chapel’s sanctuary or the addition of the St. Joseph statue

on the grounds.

Most of you donate so that we are able to pay our bills,

keep the doors open, retain good employees and manage

the upkeep of the buildings and grounds.

Some of the projects undertaken this year include repainting retreat rooms and other areas of the

Spiritual Center using high-quality paint which costs about $50 per gallon.

Insurance covered the expense of some repairs and replacement of doors and windows after Hurricane

Irma, but it was realized that other doors needed replacement before the start of hurricane season.

Your donations allowed us to make these needed upgrades.

By your specific monetary gifts, some of you make it possible for us to offer the Young Adult and the

Spanish Retreats to those in need, for whom attending would be financially

impossible.

Every time you add a little extra to the requested retreat fee, or respond

generously to our annual appeal and Gala event, you allow the Spiritual Center

to remain available to all.

Every time you remember a loved one with an additional donation, we are able to

make an unexpected repair, or add something special, like the words “Welcome

Home” to the lobby, so that everyone may experience hospitality and peace in

this place.

This is holy ground because of all who come here. This is holy ground because

you, our benefactors, make it possible for the Passionists to keep this ministry

alive in South Florida.

Thank YOU!!

Saying Goodbye & Welcoming Home!

Farewell Fr. Emmanuel Gardon, C.P. August 2017, the Passionist community, staff and friends of the

Spiritual Center celebrated the life of Fr. Em. Knowing him is to know

his love for all the dogs he had, for his good humor and his great

preaching. He brought the compassion of Christ to all he met.

Joining in the wake and Mass services were men and women from

North Palm Beach Fire, Rescue & Police departments. He served as

their chaplain for many years. For the Mass those fire fighters on duty

came with their Truck and in full gear in order to be ready if they were

called out. They wanted to say farewell.

Introductions & Transitions!

Welcoming Passionists to the Community

Returning to the Spiritual Center after completing

his assignment at the Passionist Parish in Paris,

France is Fr. Francis Finnigan, C.P. Many will

remember him as the former Director here.

Also assigned to Our Lady of Florida is Fr. Edward

Wolanski, C. P. His most recent assignment was

Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh, NC.

Fr. Francis will arrive in September and Fr. Edward

will be here in July.

Introductions & Transitions

After 13 years at OLFSC, Maggie Albee departed for the

state of New York where her longing for all the seasons

of the year will be realized. We celebrated her presence

among us and miss her.

Fortunately, for the last few years Linn Brown has both

volunteered and worked part time assisting Maggie in

the work of the retreat coordinator office.

While Linn knows there still much to learn in her new

role, she brings her skills, compassion and friendly

presence to this important work.

Jesus meets His mother, Mary

Introduction: At Our Lady of Florida there are many crosses and

crucifixes. There are also several Stations of the Cross. Frequently

during a retreat individuals or groups will walk the outdoor stations and

take the time to meditate at each one.

When long-time retreatant, Marciano Miclat, MD, from St. Peter Parish

(PBG) made last year’s retreat (By His Wounds You are Healed) he

found himself lingering at the fourth station: Jesus meets His Mother.

He wrote the following reflection and with his permission it is shared

here.

I meditated on the Stations of the Cross in the garden early Saturday morning when the sun was just

beginning to rise.

When I reached the Fourth Station, I began to wonder what conversation must have transpired between

Jesus & His Mother when they met. Mother Mary must have been mortified when she saw her son’s

bloodied appearance. She must have asked her Son:

“What happened? What have they done to You? Why did

they do this to You? What have You done to deserve

this?”

Looking at His Mother with a tender gaze, Jesus may have

replied: “Not to worry my dear Mother, My Father in

Heaven will take care of Me & He will make everything

NEW!”

Did this signal to Mary His resurrection & that’s why she

was not at the tomb on the third day because she

believed?

(Lord, forgive my unbelief.)

As I concluded my reflection on this station, I looked through the sculpture to the west and saw a fading

full moon painted against a cerulean blue sky. Behind me was the majestic sun rising from the east.

What a sight to behold!

2019 Spiritus Dei Gala at

Lost Tree Club

Our Lady of Florida will hold our 46th

Annual “Spiritus Dei Gala” at the beautiful

Lost Tree Club in 2018.

It is never too early to mark your calendars:

Sunday Evening

March 31, 2019

Fr. Paul and the Gala committee are already

making plans for the next event. Lost Tree

has proved to be a wonderful venue so we

are returning there again.

Details of the event will be sent to everyone

later.

Meet Courtnee Hughes

Courtnee grew up spending time between the US and

the Bahamas where at an early age she became a

“foodie,” that is, interested is how food is made, how to

season it and ways to be creative with what is available.

While she enjoys cooking for family and friends, when

she came to Our Lady of Florida in the Fall of 2017, she

found a place where creativity is welcomed and her

fellow employees are “amazing.”

Her love of travel is connected with her sense of

adventure when it comes to food. She has taken a

course in Brussels, traveled to Europe, the Islands, as well as Central America looking for out of the way

places to eat and learn the local culture and customs of

the foods people prepare and eat.

Some people are born cooks with a love, care and

respect for the food of the earth and the creativity of

others. Courtnee is one of those people

Page 7 Retreat Season 2018—2019

Our Lady of Florida is deeply grateful to the “Fishermen” listed on the table to the left who have brought at least one new retreatant with them on their retreat from July, 2017 to June, 2018.

Please consider joining their ranks in our new retreat season.
