Lorem aliquam nostrudes ! P EARLS OF DELTA KNOWLEDGE SAVANNAH ALUMNAE CHAPTER JANUARY 2019 Message from the President Each year in the U.S. approximately 13,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and more than 4,000 die as a result. The disease takes an even greater toll globally as the vast majority of cervical cancers occur in low-income countries. In both the U.S. and abroad, cervical cancer is most often found in women living in poverty and who lack access to health care. According to the National Institutes of Health, cervical cancer develops slowly, starting as a precancerous condition known as dysplasia. These abnormal cells are easily detected through a Pap test and can be treated effectively. There is also an HPV test that, when combined with a Pap test in women over age 30, can help identify women at risk for developing cervical cancer. Two tests help prevent cervical cancer or find it early: The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, which are cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately. The human papillomavirus (HPV) test looks for the virus that can cause these cell changes. Spread the word, get involved and get tested! Greetings Sorors of Savannah Alumnae Chapter A new year is upon us and with it, an opportunity to renew our commitment to becoming a better version of ourselves. This month is special to every woman of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. One hundred and six years ago on January 13, 1913, twenty-two dynamic, brave, bold, awe inspiring women decided that a change from the status quo was needed and created an organization dedicated to serving a purpose greater than themselves. During the Rededication Ceremony I could not help but reflect on what that period of time must have felt like for our beloved Founders. The excitement of creating change; the fear of what their friends and families would think; the repercussion of leaving an organization because it was time to do more and the uncertainty of wondering “are we doing the right thing.” My Sorors, we were created from greatness, we were created to make change happen, we were created to push beyond the barriers of racial, gender, and class disparities to be more, create more and pull up our communities and push them forward! The vision of our Founders is kept alive by every woman in Delta Sigma Theta through service to others. As we move through this year, remember “The 22” and their decision to make a difference through committed, unwavering and dedicated service. Let their desire to serve be the voice in you that propels you to continue to serve Savannah Alumnae Chapter and our community. With Love & Devotion to Delta, S Laura N. Wiins, President

Each year in the U.S. approximately 13,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and more than 4,000 die as a result.

Two tests help prevent cervical cancer or find it early: • The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks

for precancers, which are cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately.

• The human papillomavirus (HPV) test looks for the virus that can cause these cell changes.

Spread the word, get involved and get tested!

A new year is upon us and with it, an opportunity to renew our commitment to becoming a better version of ourselves.  This month is special to every woman of D e l t a S i g m a T h e t a Sorority, Inc.

With Love & Devotion to Delta,

Soror Laura N. Wiggins, President
