    From 1 May the BBC Big Screens in Birminghams Victoria Square

    and Coventrys Millennium Place, will be transformed into LiveSites with seating, bunting and marquees making them the placeto go to gather and watch live coverage of the London 2012Olympic and Paralympic Games.

    Each Live Site will follow the Olympic Torch live as it works its waythrough the Midlands towards the Olympic Park, with big localcelebrations at the Birmingham Live Site on 30 June and early on1 July, and at Coventry, where it stays overnight on 1 July, followed

    by another early start on 2 July.

    The Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be among the highlightsand throughout the Olympic fortnight the Live Sites will show livesport from 7am to 11pm every day.

    The Live Sites will also show a range of arts events andperformances inspired by the Games. Events will include threelive relays from the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, theQueens Diamond Jubilee concert, Radio 1s Hackney Weekend

    2012, The Big Lunch, Boys Dancing, and The Voyage 2124 June.

    Childrens Lives is an exhibition examining the lives ofchildren from the 18th century to the present day.Photographs, archive documents, costumes, artworkand objects will bring to life more than 300 yearsof history, providing a fascinating insight intoBirminghams history, as well as shedding light

    The following day, 29 July, she will be the focal point of the GodivaCarnival in Coventry; a magnicent celebration for all the familywhere she will board her Cyclopedia for the rst time.     Stockhausen was a revolutionarygure in 20th century music. Hisinnovation moved compositioninto new territory embracing

    the new technology of electronicmusic and breaking the barriersbetween musical genres. Hehas inuenced pop, rock andelectronic music and his appeal

    to a very broad young audiencesells out the Royal Albert Halland the Barbican as well as largeconcert halls in Europe, America

    and the Pacic Rim.

    Of his monumental achievementLicht, (Light) a cycle of 7 operas,

    one for each day of the week,Mittwoch (Wednesday) is theonly part of the cycle he neversaw staged.

    Even 5 years after his death

    the challenge and scale of thepiece, in six parts includingthe Helicopter String Quartetand featuring two choirs, solo

    instrumentalists, live electronicand acoustic music and adancing camel, means thepiece still awaits its premiere.

    In August 2012 Mittwoch ausLicht/Wednesday from Light

    nally hits the stage or rathera former chemical works in themiddle of Birmingham.

    Internationally acclaimedopera director Graham Vickhas assembled an outstandingartistic team with his uniqueBirmingham Opera Company

    featuring some 150 performers.Under the musical direction ofStockhausens long-timecollaborator, Kathinka Pasveer

    the line-up includes BirminghamsEx Cathedra and London Voiceswith an array of virtuosoorchestral soloists as well

    as local performers recruitedand trained through thecompanys award-winningparticipation programme.

    Inspired by and featuring the

    central gures of Eve, Luciferand Michael, Licht (Light)explores a spiritual world ofworld peace and global harmony.

    Its powerful vision of harmonybetween humans and theuniverse offers a ttingcultural equivalent to theinternationalism and the

    values of the Olympic Gamesand London 2012.

    Using the latest digital technologies, Mandalawill see Birmingham Town Hall spectacularly

    illuminated in colour and light and brought tolife by 3D moving projections and breathtakingvisual effects, presented by Sampad.

    The projections will capture the beautiful forms of

    South Asian dance and reect live performancesfrom leading acts including Devika Rao and AakashOdedra, mixed in with specially recorded footage.

    The accompanying soundtrack will sizzle with thecontemporary energy of British Asian music andincorporate the music of world-class artists such asAnoushka Shankar, Zakir Hussain and Talvin Singh.
