An opera by Karlheinz Stockhausen.A new production commissioned forhe London 2012 Festival, producedy Birmingham Opera Company.
We have individual scenes from Mittwoch aus Lichtin very good concert performances. But all attempts tostage Mittwoch aus Licht have not been successful.I do not want the opera performance to be incompleteStockhausen
Stockhausen was a revolutionarygure in 20th century music. Hisinnovation moved compositioninto new territory embracing
the new technology of electronicmusic and breaking the barriersbetween musical genres. Hehas inuenced pop, rock andelectronic music and his appeal
to a very broad young audiencesells out the Royal Albert Halland the Barbican as well as largeconcert halls in Europe, America
and the Pacic Rim.
Of his monumental achievementLicht, (Light) a cycle of 7 operas,
one for each day of the week,Mittwoch (Wednesday) is theonly part of the cycle he neversaw staged.
Even 5 years after his death
the challenge and scale of thepiece, in six parts includingthe Helicopter String Quartetand featuring two choirs, solo
instrumentalists, live electronicand acoustic music and adancing camel, means thepiece still awaits its premiere.
In August 2012 Mittwoch ausLicht/Wednesday from Light
nally hits the stage or rathera former chemical works in themiddle of Birmingham.
Internationally acclaimedopera director Graham Vickhas assembled an outstandingartistic team with his uniqueBirmingham Opera Company
featuring some 150 performers.Under the musical direction ofStockhausens long-timecollaborator, Kathinka Pasveer
the line-up includes BirminghamsEx Cathedra and London Voiceswith an array of virtuosoorchestral soloists as well
as local performers recruitedand trained through thecompanys award-winningparticipation programme.
Inspired by and featuring the
