What do Chinese people do on the New Year’s Eve?

How do Chinese people celebrate the National Day?

On New Year’s Eve, all the members of families come together to hold feasts. Jiaozi is popular in the North, while southerners favor a sticky sweet glutinous rice pudding called “NianGao”. At midnight on New Year’s Eve, people used to set off fire-crackers to drive away the evil spirits and to greet the arrival of the new year. In an instant whole cities were engulfed in the deafening noise of the firecrackers.

Celebrations usually take the form of parties in amusement parks by day and fireworks and grand TV ensembles during the evening.

Grammar: EllipsisGrammar: Ellipsis 省略 为了避免重复,突出新信息,并使上下文紧密连接,常常省略句子中

的某些成分。英语的句子可以省略各种句子成分,但要以不引起歧义为前提。

例如课文第 1 段第 2 句: The date for this annual celebration is determined by the lunar calendar rather than the Gregorian calendar… 其中 the Gregorian calendar 是 it is determined by the Gregorian calendar 的省略。

在对话中,许多成分可以省略,尤其是在答句中可省略主语、谓语或其它成分。

例如: -- Like a drink? (省略了主语 You ,或 Do/Would you. ) -- Yes. (省略整句 I would like a drink. )

省略还常见于英语表格中,如本单元 Reading B 中即有多处省略。
