Here it is again – Thanksgiving has just past and we’re moving on toward the Christmas holiday season. Seems like just a few weeks ago I was wrapping door prizes for the 2011 Mensa Holiday Gala Party … and here I am getting stuff together for the 2012 Holiday Gala. Time really does fly! But, when you’re as busy as Mike and I are, it’s not a big sur- prise. We meet ourselves coming and going sometimes! November’s Mensa activities were once again varied – there was, as usual, some- thing for everybody. Besides the regular events, our Main Monthly Meeting was a session at “Painting with a Twist.” This was really, really fun! When you get there, they have everything set up – your canvas, paints, brushes, and apron – and all you have to do is follow their simple instruc- tions to paint that evening’s art selection. They break it all down into simple steps and very clearly explain the techniques to use to replicate that night’s selected painting. We did the “Twinkly Christmas Tree” and all our paintings turned out great! You can see them posted on the Plains & Peaks Mensa Facebook page – go there and check it out. This was so much fun, I already have two more sessions planned for myself. Also in November – playing Buzztime Trivia at TGI Fridays for our Trivial Pursuits activi- ty – our group once again left its mark! Out of the 9 players that night at that location, we took the top 5 positions. That TGI Friday location scored 24 th nationwide and Al Ack- erson ended up in 40 th place nationwide, followed by Jim Hunter in 41 st and me in 42 nd ! Pretty impressive! Coming in December, Give In To Beer Pres- sure and then … our biggest event of the year – our annual Holiday Party! Be sure to RSVP by the 3 rd of December for this gala event. There’s a flyer in this newsletter with the information about the party, as well as the White Elephant Gift Exchange. There are door prizes, lots of fun, a White Ele- phant gift exchange, tons of fun, great din- ner, more fun, visiting with fellow Mensans … and did I mention fun?? And – great news – Connor says our treasury is flush enough to help offset the dinner cost for each Mensan and one guest! Yes!! Also in keeping with the season, Ed Herlik will be hosting a “Christmas Miracles” par- ty! Check out the description on our calen- dar page – and thanks to Ed for hosting this! Looks like a really fun event – combin- ing a little critical thinking with some Christ- mas celebration! Remember, if you have a line on a good guest speaker or want to set up an event or museum visit, let me know and we’ll get it scheduled in our calendar. That’s about all for now … as always, huge thanks and kudos to Betsy, our Editor and Windy, our Webmistress! Thanks also to Connor, who “cooks the books” for us; Jen- ny, our Second VP; Sean, our Gifted Chil- dren’s Coordinator; and Al, past Pres and all -around good guy! I’d also like to add a note of special thanks to Dave Syndergaard and Jennifer Owens, who’ve recently moved to Utah to enjoy retirement. Dave and Jen were active mem- bers in our group for many years – Dave was LocSec at one time and Jen could al- ways be counted on to help out with many of our events. They also hosted Poker Night regularly and held Texas Hold’em several times a year. Dave, Jen … I will really miss both of you! You are not only fellow Men- sans, but great friends of mine. And …keep the guest room ready! And – at this time of year, I’d like to thank all my special Mensa friends who join in events, host events, and make my involve- ment in Mensa well worthwhile: Jenny, Susan C, Susan C, Nancy F, Larry, Matt, Art, Vera, Chris, George, Bill, Steven, Mark, Jan, Sean, Michael, Ed, Stephen, Brian, Wetzel, Ann, Kathie, Deborah, Gary, Tony, Anthony, David, Gary, Steve, Jim, RC, Gia, Kari, Lou, Daniel, Jennie-Jo, Wayne, Eryn and anybody I might have missed … and hugs to all of you… my Mensa friends. NEWS ABOUT DUES A recent extensive survey of our members affirms that those who have a sense of BELONGING enjoy participating in local Mensa events and are getting the most VALUE out of their memberships. That just makes sense, right? Those who choose not to take advantage of the many events, dinners, programs, intelligent conversations, chances to meet new friends, etc. don’t feel as attached to Mensa. With that in mind, because of a 50% increase in the amount of funds American Mensa needs to send to International Mensa, a rate increase is com-ing up. The new rate will still be less than 20¢ per day ($70 per year). Personally, I’ve met my wonderful husband through Mensa and have dear friends that are more like family. The Lifetime membership works for me. My motto is: MENSA: Smart Means Belonging! GIFTED YOUTH COORDINATOR The Board voted unanimously to change the name of Gifted Children Coordinator to Gifted Youth Coordinator, a fittingly descriptive title indeed. WELCOME NEW OFFICERS JANE JOHNSON, Proctor-in-Training for Kansas Sunflower Mensa CRAIG WILSON, Treasurer for Boulder/Front Range Mensa WE HAVE A FACEBOOK PAGE! Log onto your Facebook page and search for “Mensa Region 7” to share ideas, events, etc. or just click on http://www.facebook.com/groups/HeartlandMensaRegion7. We have close to 150 very interesting members and new members every week so far! We’re sharing pho-tos, events, movies, book reviews and more.

    HAVE A WONDERFUL HOLIDAY SEASON!

2012 Plains&Peaks Holiday Party Don’t miss our legendary Plains & Peaks Holiday Party!!

Mark your calendars now: Saturday, December 8th!! We’ll be getting together on Saturday, the 8th of December, to cele-brate the holiday season, our friendships and our unique Mensa ca-maraderie. Our annual gala, featuring dinner, door prizes, White Ele-phant Gift Exchange, and a generally all-around GREAT time will be at the historic Stagecoach Inn in Manitou Springs. We’ll be meeting for cocktails (pay-as-you-go) at 5:00 pm, with dinner at 6:30 pm. See the flyer in this newsletter for other details about the event! Be sure to wear something appropriate to the season. Reindeer ant-lers and Rudolph noses are very acceptable; socks that play Christmas Carols may even be better!! The punishment if you are not appropri-ately attired: you’ll be required to sing a Christmas Carol a cappella. We’ll also be doing a White Elephant Gift Exchange. For those of you not familiar with this type of gift exchange (which is GREAT FUN), read on for the details! WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT EXCHANGE Remember that tacky “gift” you got last year at your office party gift ex-change? What about the unidentifia-ble and utterly artless “sculpture” your cousin presented you with on your anniversary? Here’s your chance to get rid of an unwanted, (White Elephant) item. A White Elephant Gift Exchange works like this. Find something you don’t want any more (valued between $15 and $25 and in working condition). Wrap it up nicely in holiday paper. Bring it to the Plains & Peaks Mensa Holiday Party on December 8th at the Stagecoach Inn (in Manitou Springs) and stack it with all the other gifts.

Easy Cookin’ 101 in November was hosted by Susan Creager and she made crepes! Here’s her Pumpkin Crepe recipe!

Pumpkin Crepes Pumpkin Filling 1 can pumpkin 1 package cream cheese 1 cup powdered sugar (or a little less) ½ teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon nutmeg or allspice if you have it Blend ingredients until smooth. Crepes 2 TBL melted butter 3 eggs ¼ tsp salt 1 tsp sugar 1 cup flour 1 ½ cup milk 1/2 tsp cinnamon Blend all ingredients. Preheat nonstick pan on medium for 15 minutes. Pour ¼ cup of bat-ter. When top of crepe is dry flip and cook other side until lightly brown. Add a couple of tablespoons of pumpkin filling to the center of the crepe and roll up. Top with whipped cream and nutmeg. Yum!!

    Easy Cookin’ 101

Everyone bringing a gift will draw a number. Whoever picks number 1 will be allowed to select one gift from the pile and open that gift. The person who has number 2 can chooses a gift from the pile or take the gift the person with number 1 has. If person number 2 chooses to take the gift from person number 1, then person number 1 gets to choose another gift and open it. Then the person who holds number 3 will choose a gift or exchange that gift with person 1 or 2. Again, if person number 3 chooses to take one of the opened gifts, the person whose gift was taken can choose and open another present. This progresses until the last person has the final choice among all the opened gifts or the last gift on the table. Then, as the final White Ele-phant exchange, the poor person who got number 1 gets to either keep his/her gift or take one of the gifts eligible for grabbing. (A gift can only be exchanged three times. After that, the person who has it is stuck with it!) Participating in the White Elephant Gift Exchange at the Plains & Peaks Mensa Holiday Party is entirely optional. But, keep in mind, it’s a lot of fun – and you never know what you’ll end up with – you might even like what you got! Some of the past years gifts have included: a stuffed toy chicken, an indoor waterfall machine-thing, bottles of wine, puzzles, books, CDs and videos, and lots of other neat (and not so neat!) things! It’s all in the spirit of the holiday – so join in!!

join us for a short ExComm meeting (our monthly business meeting) and dinner at Dat’s Italian, 2514 W. Colorado Ave (in Old Colorado City). For a menu preview, visit www.datsitalian.com. All Mensa mem-bers and guests are invited to this event. Sunday, January 13th, 3 pm: Jack Quinn’s Irish Sessiun. Let’s meet up at Jack Quinn’s and enjoy the traditional Irish music featured during their Sunday Sessiun (Irish Jam Session) before heading around the corner to Kimball’s for the movie. Jack Quinn’s is at 21 South Tejon. AND then at 4:30 pm: Kimball’s Peak Three Movie! Join some of your fellow Mensans at Kimball’s, which is a downtown (Pikes Peak and Tejon) first run movie theater show-ing “the very best of current independent and foreign films.” The plan is to meet at 4:30, have a drink in Kimball’s full service bar, select a movie to attend together, and then afterwards, have another drink and/or dinner and discuss the movie. We’ll be taking a chance on what Kimball’s is showing on this date - but you never know! Could be the best movie you’ve ever seen!! Thursday, January 17th, 8 pm: RSVP for Poker Night. Call Larry and Nancy at 593-9839 to RSVP, direction and other specifics. Friday, January 18th, 5 pm: Mid-Month Happy Hour! Get together for a drink and something to eat at Adam's Apple, a Mensan-owned neighborhood bar at 3302 Austin Bluffs Parkway. See you there!

Saturday, January 19th, 6:00 pm: Poker Night. Larry and Nancy will host a Just-for-fun nickel-dime-quarter poker game at their house, 6964 Granite Peak Drive. Beginners welcome. Snacks and diet sodas will be provided. Bring your own

drinks if you want something else. Adults only, please! Allergy alert – friendly dogs and cats. If we don't have at least 5 players by Thursday evening, we may cancel and go to Cripple Creek instead! Thursday, January 24th, 8 pm: RSVP for Ultimate Saturday Supper. Call Al at 635-4910 or shoot him an e-mail at [email protected] to let him know you’ll be joining us at USS at the Stadium Bar and Grill on Saturday. Saturday, January 26th, 6:30 pm: Ultimate Saturday Supper. Meet us at the Stadium Bar and Grill, 6120 Barnes Road, for some brews (if that's your thing) and a pretty eclectic variety of foods. Try the Gut-buster, a 1/2 pound Angus beef burger topped with Swiss cheese, grilled onions, a pile of pastrami, and smeared with Heidelburg mus-tard. If you're more daring, take the Slaughterhouse Stadium Chal-lenge, where a couple must down 3 half-pound burger patties, with 3 ounces of pastrami, six slices of cheese, beer-battered jalapenos, chipotle mayo, lettuce, tomato, 12 ounces of fries, and 25 ounces of beer in under 20 minutes and thereby win a place of honor on the Wall of Fame, get a t-shirt, and pay nothing (if you can't finish it's $35.99). There's something for everybody on the menu, so come, watch some football on any of the 37 televisions, and sate yourself! Advance Notice: Thursday, February 7th, 6:30 pm: ExComm Meeting and Dinner. Please join us for a short ExComm meeting (our monthly business meeting) and dinner at Duca’s Pizza, 12229 Voyager Parkway #170. This new pizza place touts truly authentic Neapolitan pizza, with handmade crust made daily – and pizzas cooked in an authentic brick wood-fired oven. Check it out at www.ducaspizza.com. All Mensa members and guests are invited to this event.

Monday, December 3rd, 8 pm: RSVP for the Plains & Peaks Mensa Holiday Party! RSVP to Sandy, 528-5483 or [email protected]. Friday, December 7th, 5 pm: Give In To Beer Pressure. Join us for the December “Give In To Beer Pressure” at Phantom Canyon, 2 Pikes Peak Ave. Set on the corner of Pikes Peak and Cascade – this pub is a Colora-do Springs favorite! Visit www.phantomcanyon.com for a look at the menu! We’ll hoist a few, commiserate about our tough week at work

and generally have a good time! (Note – we’ll be visit-ing different establishments each month for this event – so if you’ve heard of a good brew-pub or happy hour bar in the local area, please let Vera know. Vera can be reached at 864-430-0126 or [email protected].) Saturday, December 8th, 5 pm: Plains & Peaks Mensa

Holiday Party! We’re all meeting at the Stagecoach Inn in Manitou Springs for our biggest event of the year – our Holiday Gala Party. Door prizes, White Elephant Gift Exchange, dinner – and lots of good cheer with our fellow Mensans! Look for more information in month’s news-letter. RSVPs are due by Monday, December 3rd. Saturday, December 15th, 6-9 pm: Christmas Miracles! Ed Herlik has a 1945 British Pub in his basement that’s special at Christmas, so he’s hosting a “Christmas Miracles” party! We’ll be gathering with our Men-sa friends to present, debate or just listen to 'academic' research on Christmas miracles: Do you know how reindeer fly? Have you figured out how Santa can get to all those rugrats in one night? Elves at the North Pole? There's no land and they're not dressed for anything but polar bear snacks. Explain that one. Santa passes through chimneys? Can you explain that phenomenon? And, of course, there's the fact

that there are no calories in Christmas cookies. Feel free to explain that if you can. You get the idea ... This has all the makings of a boisterous Holiday gathering – touched with some intellectual discussion! Please let Ed know you’ll be there, RSVP to: [email protected] Friday, January 4th, 5pm: Give In To Beer Pressure. Join us at the Rocky Mountain Brewery at 625 Paonia

Street (near Powers and Platte)! This place, tucked into a warehouse, is an award winner! Duane, the owner, won GOLD for two of his beers at the World Beer Cup this last May – the largest commercial interna-tional beer competition in the world! We’ll hoist a few, commiserate about our tough week at work and generally have a good time! (Note – we’ll be visiting different establishments each month for this event – so if you’ve heard of a good brew-pub or happy hour bar in the local area, please let Vera know. Vera can be reached at 864-430-0126 or [email protected] Tuesday, January 8th, 7:30 pm: Trivial Pursuits. We’re playing Show-down, a 6-stage trivia contest featuring a wide variety of topics at TGIF’s, 7061 Commerce Center Drive (I-25 and Woodman). Plus we’re drinking some adult beverages (if you want to) and noshing on some pretty good food. The game starts at 8, but if you want a game player you probably should get there earlier! Thursday, January 10th, 6:30 pm: ExComm Meeting and Dinner. Please join us for a short ExComm meeting (our monthly business meeting)
