LocSec Lowdown Volume 31, Issue 11 November 2014 Hello! October just flew by; I can’t believe it’s al- ready nearing the end of the month as I type this up. I have got to get myself more organized – I let a couple of things slip through the cracks this month – and that’s something I rarely do. Either me is speeding up or I’m just gathering up more things to keep track of – which is it? Anyway, I’m geng asked quite a bit about what I have planned aſter I rere (which should be in March) – and I answer what am I not going to do? I have so many irons in the fire and a long, long list of all the stuff I want to do, I’ll have no problem keeping busy during rere- ment! Some of those things I need to keep track of are Mensa events on our November calendar! What’s coming up? Glad you asked! Here’s a teaser before you turn to the calendar page: ExComm Meeng and Dinner (elk chili – yum); GITBP – which, BTW - Art and Vera have started at their new local group in Greenville; CultureQuest Review; and Trivial Pursuits. Ever wondered about CultureQuest? It’s the annual trivia contest that many Mensa groups, including ours, parcipate in every April. Only it’s not your everyday trivia – this is an intense, mind-scouring, 90 minutes of brain-racking terror! Susan’s hosng a “meet up” to review the last year’s quesons (and if me, maybe a previous year). This is a great chance for those who have never parcipated to see what the quesons are like as well as giving those who did aend a chance to see the answers. Check out the details on the calendar page! I’ve also scheduled a Mix & Mingle in November. This is a relaxed, very social event and an excellent one to aend as an ice-breaker. If you’ve not been to a Mensa event in a while (or ever), please join us at the bar in the lobby of the Mining Exchange Hotel – and get to know us! We’ll also be vising the Broadmoor again in No- vember to see the Penrose Heritage Museum (formerly the Carriage Museum). It was closed when we last tried to go there – but I confirmed they’re open now! Speaking of museums, huge “Thanks” to George for arranging the visit to Maguireville in October. What a place! Mr. Maguire has an extensive collecon of … well, just about everything that has to do with life in the mid-1800s to early 1900s. Harnesses, saddles, tools, ice saws, a mule-drawn gravel wagon, a one- horse-drawn hearse, a huge safe from Cripple Creek, and bells! (We got to ring the bells!) Mr. Maguire personally led us around his buildings and told some great stories about several items in his collecon – fascinang! Thanks again, George! Aenon! The MERF Scholarship Essay Contest is well under way. If you have a family member or friend who is enrolled (or will be enrolled) in a degree program in an accredited instuon, let them know about this scholarship opportunity. It’s not a big scholarship prize, but when you’re a stu- dent, as many of you know, you can use any extra dollars that might come along. And, entry into this contest is easy, easy, easy. Just a 550 word essay about your goals and how you’re going to achieve them! Check out the arcle in this newsleer or go on-line. And, both Sean McCormick and I are looking for judges for the MERF Scholarship Essay Contest. If you’re interested in judging at the local or regional level, let us know! Then, coming up in early December – our annual Holiday Gala! Mark your calendar, get that RSVP in to me with your meal choices, and then come to the party to relax and visit with your fellow Men- sans! We’ll have a happy hour to loosen up with some drinks and socializing, then there’s dinner, door prizes and a White Elephant giſt exchange! Too much fun! Don’t miss this event! Just a reminder, our next issue of PlainsPeaking will be the combined December/January issue – so if there’s an event you’d like to try in January or an arcle for the January newsleer, let Betsy and me know early enough to get it into that double news- leer! http://www.plainsandpeaks.us.mensa.org/ The Newsletter of Plains and Peaks Mensa, Southern Colorado In This Issue Trivial Trivia…...……………….....….…...2 Birthdays……………….………........……..2 Cryptogram.…………………....…………..2 Plains and Peaks Officers……...........2 Plains & Peaks Paer....…….............3 White Elephant…………………...……....3 BurgerQuest............………......……….4 Giſted Youth Program.……………...….4 MERF Scholarship Contest………..…..4 Holiday Party…………………...…………..5 Trivia/Cryptogram Answers…….…….6 November Events……………...……......6 November Calendar……..……...........7 Welcome & Farewell......................7 Anniversaries.................................7 (Go directly to arcle by clicking on the tle.) Hello! October just flew by; I can’t believe it’s al-ready nearing the end of the month as I type this up. I have got to get myself more organized – I let a couple of things slip through the cracks this month – and that’s something I rarely do. GAMES NIGHT REPORT! Chris and George Cooper hosted another Games Night on October 11th. A good time was had by Al, Austin, “B” (Al’s friend), Caitlin, Chris, Doug, Ellen, George, Jenny Jo, Linda, Sean, Susan, and Wayne. Home-made ice creams (vanilla, chocolate mocha and peach pecan) were offered with sundae-making ingredients. Al brought potato chips to put on his ice cream and it made a big hit among the group. The salty/sweet flavor was deli-cious. Al, B, Chris and Linda played “Upwords" and OF COURSE Al won. B came in second. Austin, Caitlin, Ellen, George, Sean and Susan played "Beyond Bal-derdash" and Susan won with Ellen coming in second. 2015 will see the next Games Night. Hope to see you there. Happy Holidays! HELP WANTED: MERF JUDGES! Judging MERF essays is easy – and this is an easy way to get involved with Plains & Peaks Mensa! All the entries are on-line and the judging criteria are well defined (based on a 100 point system – very simple). We anticipate around 50 entries for our group and the winner will receive a local scholarship of $300 and be submitted to the Regional level MERF contest. Sean McCormick is the Regional Chair again this year – so if you’d like to judge at that level instead of local, contact Sean!

HELP WANTED! Do you have a Media or Publicity background? Or perhaps it’s something you’d like to try? Consider helping Plains & Peaks Mensa with Admissions Testing publicity! We’re looking to in-crease our testing numbers and really need a hand with the publicity – ideas, contacts, someone to take this particular bull by the horns and wrestle around with it! And, bonus – this would look good on your

resume or annual job appraisal! If you’d be interested in volunteering to be our Publicity person, contact Sandy at [email protected]! JOIN PLAINS & PEAKS MENSA ON FACEBOOK! See photos of recent activities and meetings and get to know some of your fellow Mensans via this popular social site! It’s a “closed” group so you have to ask to join. Search FB for “Plains & Peaks Mensa.” DECIPHER YOUR LABEL! Those of you who get this newsletter via snail mail have a Mensa generated label. The number at the top left is your member number. Next is your current paid membership (either a year or Life). The next numbers refer to our region (07) and group (808). To the far right are letters that tell us how to deliver this newsletter: P (you chose print), P-N (no choice and no email provided), P-EO (you chose electronic version but haven’t sup-plied us with a valid email address). If your label has P-EO, please consider going online and supplying your email address: Mensa will only use it internal-ly. The money our group saves ($1.75 per person) can be put to better use. WORDS WITH FRIENDS AND SCRABBLE® PLAYERS: Can’t get enough Words with Friends or Scrabble®? Look Betsy or Sandy up on Facebook (Betsy Levine Ogan or Sandra Lynn Halby) and start a game! If you have anything (article, poem, photo, puzzle, a link to your blog or web-site, whatever) you’d like to contribute to this newsletter, please forward it to PlainsPeaking Editor Betsy Ogan ([email protected]) for inclusion in Plain-sPeaking! And, don’t forget, you can advertise your business in PlainsPeak-ing. The current rates are: business card size $6, quarter page $10, half page $25 and full page $50.

Intelligent Joke of the Day Pavlov is sitting at a bar, when all of the sudden the phone rings… Pavlov

gasps, “Oh crap, I forgot to feed the dogs.”

Don’t miss our legendary Plains & Peaks Holiday Party!!

Mark your calendars now: Saturday, December 6th!! We’ll be getting together on Saturday, the 6th of December, to celebrate the holiday season, our friendships and our unique Mensa camaraderie. Our annu-al gala, featuring dinner, door prizes, White Elephant Gift Exchange, and a generally all-around GREAT time will be at the historic Stagecoach Inn in Mani-tou Springs. We’ll be meeting for cocktails (pay-as-you-go) at 5:00 pm, with dinner at 6:30 pm. Watch for more details in the November PlainsPeaking newsletter. After checking numerous hotels and venues around town, we decided to keep our Holiday Gala at the Stagecoach Inn once again this year. The price is very reasonable and the service has always been superb. We’ll also be doing a White Elephant Gift Exchange. For those of you not famil-iar with the White Elephant Gift Exchange (which is GREAT FUN), read on for the details!

WHITE ELEPHANT GIFT EXCHANGE Remember that tacky “gift” you got last year at your office party gift exchange? What about the uniden-tifiable and utterly artless “sculpture” your cousin presented you with on your anniversary? Here’s your chance to get rid of an unwanted, or White Elephant, item. A White Elephant Gift Exchange works like this. Find something you

don’t want any more (valued between $15 and $25 and in working condition). Wrap it up nicely in holiday paper. Bring it to the Plains & Peaks Mensa Holi-day Party on December 6th at the Stagecoach Inn (in Manitou Springs) and stack it with all the other gifts. Everyone bringing a gift will draw a number. Whoever picks number 1 will be allowed to select one gift from the pile and open that gift. The person who has number 2 can chooses a gift from the pile or take the gift the person with number 1 has. If person number 2 chooses to take the gift from person num-ber 1, then person number 1 gets to choose another gift and open it. Then the person who holds number 3 will choose a gift or exchange that gift with person 1 or 2. Again, if person number 3 chooses to take one of the opened gifts, the person whose gift was taken can choose and open another present. This pro-gresses until the last person has the final choice among all the opened gifts or the last gift on the table. Then, as the final White Elephant exchange, the poor person who got number 1 gets to either keep his/her gift or take one of the gifts eligible for grabbing. (A gift can only be exchanged three times. After that, the person who has it is stuck with it!) Participating in the White Elephant Gift Exchange at the Plains & Peaks Mensa Holiday Party is entirely optional. But, it’s a lot of fun – and you never know what you’ll end up with – you might even like what you got! Some of the past years gifts have included: a stuffed toy chicken, an indoor waterfall machine-thing, bottles of wine, puzzles, books, CDs and videos, and lots of other neat (and not so neat!) things! It’s all in the spirit of the holiday – so join in!!

Eleven of us headed for the Skirted Heifer, across North Tejon Street from the Uncle Wilber Fountain in downtown COS. We must have arrived just after a movie got out, because the place was jammed (and it is small to start with). Outside seating? Available but we had light rain. Still, Al, Caitlin, Chris B, Chris C , Doug, Ellen, George, Linda, Luke, Sandy, and Sean all found places at a table by the time our orders were filled. By the time we left, the crowd had dissipat-ed and we would have easily found immediate seating. Ratings: Burger 4.0 Service 4.5 Cleanliness 4.0 Accompaniments 3.5 Value for money 4.0 Atmosphere 3.5 Comments: “They have Boylans Soft Drinks (excellent quality) but no diet versions.” “Very small place. Got Skirted Burger and had to remove all of it (the cheese), hard, almost burnt.” “GREAT! Burgers. Fries are just acceptable. Creative and interesting topping choices (Bloody Mary Sauce???)” “Really small, did not have enough room for everybody. Really greasy.” “Hamburgers good but greasy & difficult to eat (mine was skirted)” “Excellent burger, very interesting toppings.” “Needs a liquor license.” “Good burger and toppings. Didn’t much care for the fries. Way too small (the eating area, not the burger).” “Didn’t care for the Sweet Potato Fries, they were different sizes and not cooked consistently. Liked the lemonade.” As you can see, the comments were all over the place, reflecting varying tastes for burgers. The ratings covered quite a range as well. Anyone want the stand-ard deviate to calculate a standard deviation? BurgerQuest Nine (drum roll) will be at Larkburger, 1904 Southgate Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80906, 719-466-6111. The date, as usual, is the second Sunday of the month, November 9th. Exit the interstate at South Nevada, head south half a mile or so, turn left on Southgate Rd, and it’s on your right in less than a quarter mile. WWW.larkburger.com has lots more info. If you’re con-cerned about allergies or special diets, the available gluten-free bun is also diary-free, lettuce wrap is available, no nut products, and for the non-carnivores, the Amy Burger is a vegetarian roasted portabella mushroom. An interesting note, their website menu says prices are subject to change, but it doesn’t list the prices! With the December P&P calendar pretty crowded (our personal ones are crowded as well!), we’ll skip BurgerQuest in December. The January BQ will be a return to whatever turns out to be our favorite 2014 location, as reflected in a poll to be conducted at Larkburger. I’ll have a listing of all the scores of the places we visited this year. See you at Larkburger. Don’t forget to bring the cookie-crumblers, BurgerQuest is a kid-friendly event. (To give equal time to the youthful P&Ps, bring your Old Man and/or Old Lady as well!)

The Plains and Peaks Mensa Gifted Youth Program is a valuable member benefit – for members under 18, as well as members who are parents. For the past four years, it has been one of the most rewarding experienc-es I have ever known, to build and serve the program. The support that the program has, from the local group as well as American Mensa as a whole, means that it will always have the room to be exactly what the members and participants want it to be.

Our local Gifted Youth Program is entering an exciting new chapter now, as Srikant Mantravadi steps up to lead, going forward. I can tell you that Srikant has plenty of energy to spare, and some very good ideas for the program. Beyond that, I will let him introduce himself in a future edition of the news-letter. Continue to watch this space for events and activities, news that is of use to gifted youth and their families, and of course the quarterly American Mensa contests for Young Mensans. The program may go a little quiet as we work the transition, but I am sure Srikant will be back with lots to do, in short order. I will remain always available to Srikant, and to the group. I am continuing my support of Mensa's gifted youth efforts, in as many ways as I can. Again, it has been my great and humble honor to serve you. Sean McCormick

ANNOUNCING THE 2014-2015 MERF COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY CONTEST

Deadline for entries is January 15, 2015

“The Mensa Education & Research Foundation college scholarship program is unique in that its awards are based totally on essays written by the applicants. There is no requirement for applicants to be Mensa members nor is considera-tion given to grades, academic program, or financial need.” (From the MERF Web page at http://www.mensafoundation.org/what-we-do/scholarships/) What could be easier than writing an essay describing your goals and filling out a very simple application? And the applicant requirements are minimal:

The applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the US who

resides in a participating local group's area

The applicant must be enrolled in a degree program in an accredited institution of higher learning during the academic year following the application date

The applicant must submit an application and essay of not more than 550

words explaining their academic and/or vocational goals. So, if you’re in a degree program or about to enter one, check out the MERF Essay Contest. There will be at least one prize of approximately $300 given out for our local area, along with the potential of winning up to $1000 at the national level. And remember, you don’t have to be in Mensa to participate, so if you have a friend or relative who would qualify, direct them to the MERF web-site http://www.mensafoundation.org/what-we-do/scholarships/ for the complete rules and application, or have them contact Sandy Halby, 528-5483, or e-mail [email protected].

Married, single, Gen-X, new member, long time member, Hell’s M, shy, outgoing, whatever – you’re all invited to no-host cocktails and drinks at the Stratton Lobby Bar, located in the Mining Exchange Hotel (8 South Nevada). Good conversation, excellent company, a drink or two – relax and get to know some of your fellow Mensans! If you’ve not been to a Mensa event, this is just the one you need to attend to break the ice! See you there! Sunday, November 16th, 1:15 pm: CultureQuest Party. If you participated in CultureQuest in April and want to know the answers, or if you are curious about what CultureQuest is like without having to actually participate, then this is the party for you! We will be reviewing the answers to this year's Cul-tureQuest and maybe last year's as well. Susan will be making crepes and hot apple cider. Kindly RSVP to her by Thursday, November 13th at [email protected] or 719-548-8065. Sunday, November 16th, 8pm: RSVP for Trivia. Call or e-mail Al (465-3747, [email protected]) to RSVP for Trivia – he needs a good headcount for Tuesday! Tuesday, November 18th, 7:30pm: Trivial Pursuit. We’re playing Showdown, a 6-stage trivia contest featuring a wide variety of topics, at Buffalo Wild Wings, 2905 Geyser Drive (at I-25 and Lake, next to Outback Steaks and Tinseltown) – they claim to have 45 players and Wi-Fi so everybody should be able to play this month! We’re drinking some adult beverages (if you want to) and noshing on wings and Buffalo Wild Wings specialty foods like burgers and sandwiches! The game starts at 8, but if you want a game player you probably should get there earlier! Call or e-mail Al (465-3747, [email protected]) by Sunday,

the 16th of November to RSVP.
