“Our deb ball went off without a hitch last night. Many thanks to everyone who contributed in some way, whether it was supplying, preparing or serving supper, or assisting with the setting up and cleaning of the hall after the ball. Thanks also to the staff for their help and support, it is certainly a great community event to be involved in.”

Hello again Everyone,
In this issue of the Locky News we will revisit the people of this district about a century ago, or a little less, when they were still adjusting to peace after the four-year-long World War. Australian forces had suffered a 65% casualty rate, higher than most of the nations involved, so even smaller communities like ours experienced the loss of young lives, or saw young people return home injured or impaired in some way. It’s hard to imagine the emotions that family and friends might have felt, and I am including here an extract from the Bendigonian’s report of the well-attended “welcome home” tendered on 25 June, 1918, to Lance-Corporal W A McKay, in Mr Rigby’s barn at Wanurp. In part, it reads: -
“The chairman (Rev. H. Plumtree), in a short address, explained the reason of the gathering and the honour which had been conferred upon him in presiding and making the presentation. He was pleased to welcome the guest of the evening, and when he looked at the war-scarred soldier, the wounds made one think seriously what they meant to the individual. The question which came to his mind was—"Are we worthy of these wounded heroes?" Some realised what these wounds meant to them, but there were many who were still living selfish and indifferent lives. If we wanted to make ourselves worthy, then we should, as citizens of Australia, do all in our power to assist the soldiers when they return. In presenting the medal, the chairman said: I have much pleasure in presenting you with this medal as a token of goodwill from the residents of the Wanurp district, and their great thankfulness in your safe return.”
A way to acknowledge their debt to the people who fought on their behalf, and to honour and perpetuate their memory, challenged those who had waited at home. Memorials provided some sort of answer and these began to appear across the country, even while the fighting still continued. Memorial trees were possibly the earliest version in this area. On 9 June, 1917, the Rochester Express noted that “Arbor Day will be celebrated next Friday, when trees will be planted in memory of the boys who have gone to the front from [the Wanurp] district.” It is not known for certain where the people of Wanurp planted their memorial trees, but it might possibly have been at the Pine Grove Recreation Reserve where there are known to have been some. A variety of species went into Memorial plantations; some as simple as peppercorn trees, which were known to be
hardy and able to survive dry periods such as are experienced here from time to time. Those planted at the Pine Grove Reserve include a species of pine tree, said to have originated from the ‘Lone Pine’ at Gallipoli. [I’m hoping that someone among our readers might be able to confirm that story.]
Ballendella residents organised several days of tree-planting, the first being in October, 1917, with others occurring at intervals until well into 1918. When the Warragamba branch of the Farmers’ Union met at
Diggora West, on 5 August, 1918, it was resolved — “That this branch plant trees in the Warragamba station yard in honour of our fallen heroes, who gave their life for their country.” Fifty trees were to be sent for, and a working-bee of the branch, and others who might wish to
participate, would be arranged to commence planting. On 9 August, 1918, the Rochester Express reported that there were about twenty participants at a recent working bee when ground was prepared at the Kotta Railway Station for the planting of 220 native trees to honour Australia’s fallen soldiers. Mrs Johnson, who had been a resident at Pannoobamawm for forty years was to plant the first tree. The photo here was taken at the Kotta Railway Station in the 1920s and shows the notice board describing the tree plantation and its significance.
After the signing of the Armistice in November, 1918, people began to plan and to fund-raise for the erection of many significant and beautiful World War I memorials, right across Australia, in both large and small communities. They took different forms – statues, monuments, churches, halls, schools, hospitals, commemorative gates, seats, etc. There are several in our district, and I will try to find some information about them to pass on to you in coming editions of the Locky News. ‘Bye until next time, Marg O’Brien

Lockington News
Term Two commenced with lots of busy and little people returning to kinder. Many of the rural families farewelled their children, as the began to catch the morning bus. This was an exciting and new experience for many children. The Kinder was also involved in the local Tractor Rally by holding a cake stall. Thank you to those people who baked, helped on the day or purchased the goodies. The money raised will be used to fix and replace outdoor equipment.
A beautiful afternoon tea was held for Mother’s Day on the 9
th May.
Children spoiled their mothers with hand massage, neck rub, necklace, baked goods and a personalised gift. Mothers left feeling special and re-energised for the remainder of the week.
The Echuca Regional Health Dental Service visited the Kinder on Thursday 16
th May. Children had
their teeth checked and were taught about the importance of oral hygiene. Thank you, ladies, for your patience and time.

LOCKINGTON LIONS CLUB The Lockington Lions Club held a Swap meet and Market Day last Sunday and it was a great day. 48 stall holders, great food and beautiful weather all contributed to this success.
Many traders were happy with their day, but it was a shame that not many locals came out to have a look and snap up a bargain. I would like to thank all lion members for their help and enthusiasm to make a successful day.

Fosterville Gold Mine Exploration Activities Notification to Community Members
This notification is to inform local community members about Fosterville Gold Mine’s upcoming regional exploration activities. In recent times, Fosterville Gold Mine (FGM) has experienced record produc-tion and continued growth, with a prosperous outlook for the future. Kirkland Lake Gold, the owner of the Fosterville Gold Mine, is taking this opportunity to increase FGM’s exploration activities within its regional exploration licence (EL006502).
Proposed exploration activities Soil sampling along public road reserves is expected to commence mid-
June 2019. Depending on the results of the soil sampling program, surface drilling
may be undertaken at selected locations within the exploration licence area. Any exploration activities on private land are only undertaken with landholder permission.
What is soil sampling? Soil sampling is used to detect gold indicator anomalies, which can identify sub-surface areas that have the potential for gold mineralisation.
Why use soil sampling? Soil sampling is a fast and low impact method of testing for anomalies over a large area.
What’s involved in soil sampling? An area of approximately 1x1m will be cleared to remove surface de-
bris. A small hole (approximately 40x40 cm) will be dug to a depth of 10-20
cm and the soil sample taken. After sample collection, the hole is backfilled immediately and the
ground condition restored. Each soil sample will be approximately 300g processed by sieving on-
site. Soil samples are typically taken 100 m apart along each sample line. Impacts on private property have been avoided by selecting sample
locations on public road reserves. Sampling is undertaken by 1-4 people on a quad bike or all-terrain-
vehicle.
What is the impact? The impact from soil sampling is low, and holes are backfilled immediately after sampling. The ground is returned to a similar condition prior to sam-pling, with minimal residual impact.
How do I find out more? Please contact the Fosterville Gold Mine Community Team via the general enquiries email and phone details below: Mail: Fosterville Gold Mine

Warm weather and rain a boon for Barber’s pole worm Sheep and goat losses from Barber’s pole worm could be on the horizon with the warm autumn weather following recent rainfalls.
Adult Barber’s pole worms live in the abomasum, the fourth stomach, of sheep and goats.
Agriculture Victoria Goat Health Veterinary Officer Berwyn Squire said this parasite thrives in warm, moist conditions where it can build up to lethal numbers very quickly.
“Barber’s pole worms feed by sucking blood from their host, leading to anaemia and ‘bottle jaw’, but not necessarily weight loss or diarrhoea.”
Dr Squire said the worm gets its name from the worm’s gut, which is full of blood and winds around the worm, giving it a red and white spiral effect similar to the classic barber’s pole.
“The adult female worms are prolific egg producers, leading rapidly to heavy pasture contamination. During warm, moist conditions these eggs hatch into larvae and are eaten by sheep and goats during grazing,” she said.
Consequently, Barber’s pole worm outbreaks can lead to high mortalities in a short space of time.
“Farmers should keep an eye out for early signs of disease such as ill thrift, weakness or bottle jaw.”
As with other internal parasites, drench resistance to Barber’s pole worm is becoming increasingly common. The best way to be sure worm control programs is working is to conduct faecal egg counts, before and after treatment.
For further information on treatment options please contact your local veterinarian, or Agriculture Victoria veterinary or animal health staff by calling 136 186.
Free sheep faecal egg count tests Sheep producers are being urged to submit worm samples for an AWI research trial to validate a more sensitive worm test.
They are asked to collect dung samples from a mob of wormy sheep on the day of drenching, then again 14 days after the drench.
Producers who submit worm samples will receive the results from the traditional faecal egg count (FEC) test for free, saving them hundreds of dollars.
For more information contact [email protected] or call (02) 4655 6464.
Fox and wild dog bounty The Victorian Government’s fox and wild dog bounty has resumed and will continue in the North-West and North-East regions until October.
Eligible participants can submit entire fox scalps for a $10 reward during scheduled collection times.
North-West Victoria (fox only) Bendigo – Corner Midland Hwy and Taylor Street, Epsom Tuesday 11 June, 10.30am – 12 .30pm
For full details on bounty collection go to the Agriculture Victoria website here agriculture.vic.gov.au/bounty or call the Customer Service Centre on 136 186.

Seek financial advice and assistance prior to 30 June Farm business owners are advised to seek assistance from their accountant or professional advisor and /or speak with the Australian Tax Office about preparing their business for the end of the financial year.
Each farmer will have their own individual and business circumstances and it is important to seek advice prior to June 30 to discuss their best options especially in times of drought and dry seasonal conditions.
Service and support are also available from the Rural Financial Counselling Service.
The head office of the Rural Financial Counselling Service (North-West) is in Mildura with counsellors also operating from Bendigo, Donald, Pyramid Hill and Swan Hill.
The general number to call is 1300 769 489 or (03) 5022 0799.
Better balance for private land access and exploration New tools will help rural landholders negotiate with mineral explorers searching for evidence of gold, copper and other valuable metals on private land.
Demand for minerals like gold and copper is increasing as they are key components for technology and renewable energy products.
In Victoria, before an explorer can access privately-owned land and commence exploration activities, the landholder needs to provide consent.
The new land access tools are being trialled to aid negotiations between private landholders and exploration companies.
Templates will help both parties agree on things like access to private property, setting farm biosecurity protocols and managing any impacts on crops, including potential compensation.
These voluntary tools, designed to be tailored for the specific needs and circumstances of the landholder, have been developed in consultation with the exploration industry and the Victorian Farmers Federation.
The trial of the land access tools coincides with a new wave of minerals exploration in western Victoria across an area known in geological terms as the Stavely Arc.
Following last year’s Stavely Ground Release the first of potentially six new Mineral Exploration Licences has been awarded.
Generally, early-stage exploration activities, such as mapping, sampling and rock testing, are the first steps in establishing if minerals are present.
If further development is considered to be economically viable, it takes many years to progress towards mining, including meeting strict regulatory controls.

LOCKINGTON BOWLS CLUB Report May 20: The popular game of Scrounge is beginning to become a weekly turn-out for the seasoned bowlers.
On Wednesday the cream rose to the top as Ray Hanson displayed fine form to tally 50
points and win the rink against Russell Shawcross 47 and Phillip Cunnington on 46.
On rink two the latest Club decorated Life Member Tom Davis, was on song to register 47 points for a comfortable victory over Don Smith 39. Smith is recovering from a recent nasty fall. Ann Lowrie delivered all her good bowls to score a healthy 46 points for a rink win against Dingee visitor Norma Thomas next best on 40 points.
The game of Scrounge is played at 1.00pm on a Wednesday (weather permitting) and all bowlers and non-bowlers are welcome to attend. Flat soled shoes are a pre-requisite and bowls are available for use. Names are to be submitted prior to 12.45pm.
The semi-final of the Presidents trophy 21 Up championship has been decided with Ian Johnson defeating Don Isgro in a high standard performance from both bowlers. Trading ends kept the scores close before Johnson was able to gain a break to win through to the final where he will meet Ray Hanson.
The club will hold the Annual General Meeting on Monday 3rd June at 8.00pm. All welcome to attend and discuss several important items on the agenda.
Bowling enthusiasts enjoyed some spectacular bowling at the prestigious Moama Bowling Club Geo. Lynch Fours held
on the week-end. The event attracted a top field of quality bowlers including several International and State representatives. The final was played out between two composite teams involving the winner rink of Peter Condon, John McCarron, Peter Loe and Matt Flapper (s) up against the unlucky Runners Up team comprising two Moama bowlers, Peter Broom and Jim Hogan combining with Eric Kosloff and Noel Verlinden (s) from Ballarat. The final played over six scoring ends was a close affair until Flapper drove the head to put the jack in the ditch and picked up four shots which enable them to take out the game 6-4.
Report May 27:
It was cool and cloudy conditions that greeted the brave bowlers to the game of Scrounge on Wednesday. However the weather did not deter the evergreen masters from returning high scores on the day. Top of the pack was Alan Kauffman scoring a mammoth 63 points to finish ahead of Jason Belfield. On rink two Tom Davis continued with his brilliant form to tally 58 points and head off club champion Ray Hanson on 45. Rink three produced some immaculate bowling from both Lorraine Appleby and Ann Lowrie, with Appleby winning the rink on 39 points to Lowrie 38.
Scrounge will continue on a Wednesday (weather permitting) starting at 1.00pm.
The final of the Presidents Trophy 21 Up championship is in the pipeline as Ray Hanson will tackle Ian Johnson for the title.
Best of bowling to all local Campaspe Division bowlers heading North to the Australian Open on the Gold Coast.

Report May 26: After the rain, the local men took to the course with great gusto today, but returned scores suitable to the conditions. Winner of the Stableford round was Francis Lee with 39. Runner-up was David Winchcombe, 32,

MILLOO CWA REPORT At our April meeting the Treasurer stated that the clearing sale we had catered for, showed a good profit in spite of the wind springing up and making it very dusty in the afternoon. Catering for the Senior Citizen’s birthday was then finalised and plans started
for the Echuca Group Conference and Milloo Branch 50th Birthday. The conference will be held at 10:00am and the birthday at 1:30pm on August 8 in the Mill Hall. All welcome.
Instead of our May meeting we had a social outing and visited “Pepper Green Farm” in North Bendigo. It is on the site of a Chinese market garden dating back to the mid 1850’s and it basically still is a market garden selling vegetables and plants to the public, now they do catering as well.
After we had a tour of the site we had lunch in the onsite tram with beautiful light fittings and curtains, after lunch when those of us who were purchasing plants etc., we journeyed on to the Joss House Temple which is still used as a place of worship today. It is not meant for the disabled
as the entrance doors into the various sections have a spirit wall to keep the spirits out. It is across the doorway about 30cm high which has to be stepped over or you have to lift your walking frame over. This is the last remaining Joss House Temple in Bendigo, once there were eight.
“Pepper Green Farm” employs some of the intellectually and physically challenged people in our society who work under supervision.
The next meeting of the Milloo CWA will be held at the Milloo Hall on Thursday, June 13 at 10:00am. The competitions will be:
A flower from your Garden Craft – Knitting on Progress (I am sure we all have some of that, maybe it has been in progress for a few years) Cookery – small meat pies Miscellaneous – something made from glass New members welcome. Julie Chappel. 5486 2226
SENIOR CITIZENS INC. The Senior Citizens have for some time enjoyed and prided themselves on a carpet bowls team.
Unfortunately, through no fault of their own, their numbers are diminishing and at times they cannot always muster a full team to play. We are hoping there are some folk, whether beginners or experienced players, young or old, would help us maintain this important activity for our seniors.
It is a fun time; and they meet at 10:00am on Mondays at the Community Hall. Player fee $1.00.
Your interest will be very much appreciated. Enquiries to: Bev Brereton (President) 5486-2381 Norm Bacon (Bowls Facilitator/Treasurer) 5486 2267

Celebrating Bamawm's 50 year Reunion Thanks to Darren Skelton for capturing these fantastic action shots from our Round 5 match celebrating Bamawm's 50 Year Reunion. It was a nail biter of a game with our boys bringing home the win with a 4 point victory. And a big thank you to Liz Mitchell for organising most of the event. The room was transformed into a sea of blue and red and it was so inspiring to see the premiership flags gracing the walls. I'm sorry I didn't get any photos to share with you but those who were there can attest to its magnificence.
LBU Legend - Small McIntyre For those who didn't get to read about our very own Small McIntyre in the Yabba the other week here is his story:
When thinking of someone who sums up what it means to be a Club Legend, Stephen (Small) McIntyre instantly springs to mind.
Spanning over 27 years, Stephen’s football career saw him play in over 380 senior games within 4 different leagues for Lockington and LBU.
He was runners up Best & Fairest in 1992 and again in 2005 for Seniors and in 2009 for Reserves. He was also Assistant Coach for Seniors in 2000 and Reserves in 2010. In 2007 he played his 300th game and received LBU life membership.
His career highlight was in 2009 when he coached the Thirds to win a premiership and then went on to play in a Reserves premiership himself, winning by only 2 points.
These sporting achievements are even more impressive knowing he has had to carefully monitor his Type 1 diabetes for most of his career.
He also played an important supporting role as a runner in our four premiership wins from 2011-2014. Hoping to be the good luck charm, he is back again this year.
To be deserving of the Club Legend title though it takes far more than this long list of accomplishments. Stephen can be found running laps at the footy oval on training nights and helping out where he can. He is a continual support for coaches and players alike. His commitment to our club and its members is second to none.
He also spends many hours throughout the season maintaining the oval and surrounds to help keep them up to standard.
Stephen, his wife Mon and their children, Charlie 9 and Chloe 6, will have many years to look forward to at LBU with Charlie already donning the blue and white hoops in our Under 12s football side.
Thank you Small! You are a deserving Club Legend and we appreciate everything you do!
