IMPRESSION EVIDENCELocating and Protecting…

Impression Evidence!Properly preserved impression evidence can

provide a positive match to the SHOESworn by the perpetrator, the TIRES on the getaway vehicle and the TOOLS

that may have been used in the commission of the crime.

Often thought of as a form of evidence nearly as valuable as fingerprints, impression evidence must receive priority handling. Impression evidence may exist in the form of footprints or tire tracks, tool marks and even bite marks.

The obvious place to look for tire and footprint impressions is in the soil at or near the crime scene.

Tool marks are found at the point of entry (or at-tempted points of entry) and bite marks are found on the victim. But all too often, invisible or very dif-ficult to see impressions are also present. This might include dust prints or the impressions made from wet shoes on dry floors.

A visual search is made prior to any attempts to locate and collect other forms of physical evi-dence. When outdoors, protect the area by erect-ing barriers and posting sentries. If tire and footprint evidence is located and the weather is threaten-

ing, it may be necessary to erect a tent or similar shelter in order to protect the evidence.

Many crime scene investigators view impression evidence as second only to fingerprints when con-sidering the relative value of physical evidence.

Just like fingerprints, the various points of com-parison are matched between the crime scene ev-idence and the actual object making the impres-sion. Thus far, no minimum number of points has been established. In other words, if the examiner is convinced that a perfect match exists, it doesn’t matter if there are six or sixty points of comparison.

Shoe print found in mud. Cast made from shoe print. Suspect shoe matches cast.

Casting with HARD-CORE BLUE™ in Standing Water:It is possible to make a cast of an impression that is found under water using the

following procedure:1. Carefully place a restricter/casting frame around the impression. If possible, the

restricter should be wide enough so that it stands above the water's surface.

2. Lightly sprinkle HARD-CORE BLUE™ compound to completely cover the impres-sion to a thickness dependent on the water depth.

3. Mix HARD-CORE BLUE™ with mixing solution and pour the mixture on top of the compound covering the impression. Be certain to break the fall of the mixture with a stick, spoon or spatula.

4. Let cast setup 4. Let cast setup for 30 minutes for 30 minutes and remove. and remove. Allow to dry 24 hours before examining.

Casting with HARD-CORE BLUE™:Use HARD-CORE BLUE™ in the same

manner as casting plaster. Follow these procedures for consistently good casts:1. Remove any debris, twigs or leaves

found lying on top of the impression. DO NOT remove any object embed-ded in the impression. Place a cast-ing frame (No. FCF100) around the im-pression.

2. Prepare the surface by adding several light coatings of Dust & Dirt Hardener (No. 638CA). Allow two to three min-utes of drying time between coatings. Hard soil or clay generally will not re-quire hardening. Apply a light coating of silicone release agent (No. SRA10) to the impression.

3. Pour the required amount of mixing solution into the bag with the HARD-CORE BLUE™ casting material and seal the zip-top bag.

4. Knead the mixture until thorough-ly blended (approximately two min-utes). The entire mixture should be a uniform color.

5. Pour the mixture into the impression, breaking its fall using a stick, spoon or spatula. Begin pouring around edges and allow the mixture to flow over the impression. Generally, the cast should be .5"-.75" (12.7mm-19mm) thick. No reinforcement required.

STEP 1: Remove debris not embedded and place casting frame around the impression.

Due to their size, tire and footprint impressions require a different casting medium than tool marks. For many years, crime scene investigators preferred “Plaster-of-Paris” as their first choice for recovering large impressions. In recent years, investigators have switched to die stone or dental stone materials. Die stone or dental stone forms a verydurable cast, requires no reinforcement and demonstrates no apparent shrinkage.

Tire and Footprint Casting

Dust & Dirt HardenerThe use of Dust & Dirt Harden-

er is an efficient method of pre-paring footprints and tire tracks found in loose or sandy soil.

The 638CA features a quick-drying, clear acrylic formula that adds superior strength to im-pressions—lessening the chance of detail damage due to the weight of the casting material. Use it with Plaster-of-Paris, HARD-CORE, or Shake-N-Cast™ mate-rials. One 15 oz. (425g) aerosol can is enough to make up to 30 full-size adult shoe impression ap-plications.

Snow Impression WaxImpressions found in snow or ice

present unique difficulties for recov-ery. Due to the fact that most gyp-sum-based casting materials gener-ate heat during the curing process, it is necessary to provide an insulat-ing medium. Spray Snow Impression Wax into the impression to prepare the surface for casting. This locks the impression detail to prevent melting when casting medium is applied. Net Wt. 15 oz. (425g) aerosol can.

One of the most overlooked forms of physical evidence at the crime scene is impression evidence. This is largely due to a lack of specific training in the

proper search, collection and preservation of impression evidence, and to the fact that it is often undervalued or simply not understood.

Locating and recovering the obvious kinds of impression evidence—tire tracks and footprints—isn’t the problem. It’s the not so apparent kinds of impressions that are difficult to locate, accidentally damaged or obliterated, and are often missed during the crime scene search. We

are talking about dust print impressions. Many indoor crime scenes that you will investigate contain varying amounts of dust on different surfaces.

That’s where the ESP900 becomes most useful.

ESP900 Electrostatic Dust Print LifterThe ESP900 Electrostatic Dust Print Lifter consists of a high voltage power

supply/control unit, a nickel-plated steel ground plane and a metallized lifting medium. Older electrostatic models required the use of two lifting mats—one positively charged and one negatively charged. Our latest electrostatic lifter uses only one metallized plastic sheet and a metal ground plane. As high volt-age is applied to the lifting mat, it takes on a negative charge and the ground plane becomes positive. Any dust present under the mat will take on a positive charge and will then be attracted to the negatively charged collection mat. A dust print that is transferred to the lifting mat will appear as a precise mirror image of the original print and lifts made from rough-surfaced floor tile or irregular flooring of any kind are facili-tated using this method.

EZID400 Stainfree Footwear Impression SystemUp until now the choices for recording actual shoe print evidence to com-

pare against lifted impressions have been limited. Two of the more popular methods involved rolling fingerprint ink on the sole of the shoe and transfer-ring it to paper or applying black fingerprint powder to the sole, and then transferring it to an adhesive-coated surface. Both methods create quite a mess both before taking the impression and cleaning-up afterward.

After months of research, development and testing a completely for-mulation, SIRCHIE® is proud to introduce the EZID™ Stainfree Footwear ® is proud to introduce the EZID™ Stainfree Footwear ®

System—a system that produces quality impressions without the messy clean-up!

The EZID™ system consists of a pre-impregnated stainfree pad and pre-sensitized impression cards. More than 200 footwear impressions can be taken from a single EZID™ stainfree pad. And since no ink is visible on the surface it is applied to, no cleanup is necessary. Plus, the reverse side of the impression cards are printed with an im-pression evidence report for recording all pertinent information.

The EZID400 kit is the ideal tool for use in the crime laboratory, at the crime scene and is excellent for elimination of prints at crime scenes! It is simple to use and can record even the smallest details of wear and tear found on foot-wear. The most outstanding feature is that there is no messy cleanup after im-pressions are taken.

How PVS100 Works:

Powder developed latent print is lifted from quarter with intricate detail.

Tool mark left behind in wood is cast using the brown compound of PVC100.

An easy-to-use, self-mixing, silicone-based casting kit! Here’s the newest addition to our silicone-based evidence collection ma-

terials. The PVS100 (polyvinyl siloxane) offers a unique method of mixing and applying liquid silicone for the collection of tool marks, bite marks, blood prints and even developed latent fingerprints.

An on-going problem with many silicone recovery methods is proper mix-ing of compound and catalyst. The PVS100 eliminates the mess and the guess-work by automatically mixing the exact proportions needed. Just squeeze the trigger and the two compounds are forced through a mixing tip and are dis-pensed onto the surface.

This incredible formula is the perfect method for lifting powdered latent prints from textured, irregular or curved surfaces. The transparent formula en-ables direct viewing of the print. Opaque formulas produce a reversed im-age. In many instances, transparent prints may be placed directly onto a flat-bed scanner and scanned into bed scanner and scanned into a computer (see coin and tool a computer (see coin and tool mark examples below).

STEP 1: Latent print is devel-oped on a soda can with SB201L Silver/Black Latent Print Powder.

STEP 2: Apply the silicone material to the surface with the Extruder Gun and allow to setup 4-6 minutes.

STEP 3: The resultant lift peeled from the can. Print will not rub off the lift.

SIRCHTRAK™ Tire Tread and Footwear Print-Out System

CAT. NO. DESCRIPTION PRICE

13" x 19" (33cm x 48.3cm)1- STT101 Sheet of Foam Rubber Material

for shoe print impressions, 11" x 17" (27.9cm x 43.2cm)

How SIRCHTRAK™ Works:

STEP 1: Drive the vehicle with the suspect tire tread over a sheet of SIRCHTRAK™ attached to the impres-sion board.

STEP 2: Pressure of the tire under load transfers the carbon carrier to the ad-hesive-coated receiver sheet. Simply peel off carrier and discard.

POINTS OF COMPARISON:1. Overall tread design2. Dimensions between ridges and

sections3. Positions of ridges relative to one

another4. Unusual wear, markings and distinc-

tive features5. Amount and type of wear

An accurate “signature” of suspect tire!To accurately compare tire print evidence, the track left by the

suspect tire should be recorded under the pressure of the vehicle. SIRCHTRAK™ is a new, easy-to-use “drive over” system that gives a permanent record of the tire under load, making comparisons to casts and/or photographs more reliable and eliminating dusting or inking of tires to be examined.

How It Works:Simply lay a sheet of SIRCHTRAK™ on the impression board and

drive the vehicle over it. The pressure of the tire under load causes the interleaved carbon carrier to transfer to the adhesive-coated receiver sheet. Simply peel off the carbon carrier and discard.

System Benefits:Unlike conventional meth-

ods of making test tracks, the tire tread imprints are exact, uniform, high-contrast reproduc-tions which become an accu-rate “signature” of the suspect tire. The SIRCHTRAK™ printout is perfect for comparison purposes and ultimate courtroom presen-tations.
