Located in downtown Pittsburgh, the US Steel Tower has long been the city’s tallest building. 841 feet at its highest point, the rooftop provides the perfect location to attain an unencumbered view of the surroundings that extends to the horizon in all directions. To take advantage of this vantage point, we propose to build a destination center on the roof of the tower that both in- forms and delights visitors through its impressive views and an engaging experience. The project includes an observation deck, a café, a gallery space, and a flexible courtyard space. The design is derived from the tower’s unique triangular form, utilizing views and providing nodes of interest to the visitor. The center is designed to accommodate for a variety of experiences, allowing the visitors to explore Pittsburgh on multiple levels; indoors and out, above and below as well as visually and through digital interface. Information regarding landmarks and upcoming events in the region are projected onto the smart-glass. The first level provides visitors with an indoor experience, while a raised observation deck ramps around and above the structure, providing raised views of downtown and the greater region. Elevated above the rooftop level and other distracting elements, the observation deck allows viewers to attain an unob- structed 360 degree view of the surrounding sights. It is also cantilevered over the North-West corner of the roof, providing visitors with a direct view downwards. In the South corner is a café with both indoor and outdoor seating, while a flexible gallery space is located on the North- East side. Meanwhile, the center of the structure is sheltered from harsh winds and provides makes for a flexible social space, ideal for sitting and relaxing, star-gazing, community gatherings, exhibits and performances and other special occasions or events.
