“The handcraftsmanship of ourmattresses sets them apart from mass-produced products and provides ‘old-fashioned’ value that our customers can’tsee, but it’s there,” Mike said. “Forexample, instead of using the standardone-and-half pound foam, we use two tofive pound. It’s a difference you reallycan’t see, but it raises the quality of ourmattresses.” Mostly it greatly decreasesbody impressions; and our customerslove that!

Mike said that the biggest trend todayis the no-flip mattress. Sterling however, offers both the newer no-flip and thetraditional two-sided mattresses, socustomers can have their choice.

Murdale True Value

Murdale True Value, located on Carbondale’swest side has only onepublic entrance, butthrough those doors bothprofessionals and do-it-yourselfers can find almostanything for practicallyany project.

The reason, saysMurdale owner GeorgeSheffer, is that the TrueValue store is more thanjust a single entity.

“We really have fourdifferent stores in one,” hesays. “That all adds to thevalue our customersreceive in price, service, selection and quality.”

Sheffer says Murdale is acomplete applianceretailer, a rental company,a hardware store and a fulllock shop with locksmiths. He says that thecombination of the four“stores” give MurdaleTrue Value a differentapproach to servingcustomers.

“If you are wanting tocomplete practically anyproject, here you can getthe expertise to make yourjob easier along with theproducts and equipmentyou’ll need to do the job,”

he explains.Sheffer offers the

example of a homeownerwho wants to paint hishome.

“A lot of places will sellyou paint, but what peoplereally need to know is thatthe job is not just aboutpaint,” he adds. “It goesback to the knowledge ofhow to do the whole jobthe right way. Thepreparation of the surfaceis key. It means using theright products and theright applicators, too.”

To make the task eveneasier, Murdale’s rentaldepartment offerseverything from paintsprayers to motorized lifts.Beyond painting andstaining, the same level ofservice, expertise andeasy-to-use tools areavailable for a countlessnumber of projects.

“We add value for ourcustomers by helpingthem get the end resultsthey want,” Shefferexplains. “People need tounderstand that the truecost of a project can onlybe calculated when theproject is all said anddone.. That’s what sets us

apart. We can help fromstart to finish. With us, theproject is safe, easy anddone.”

He explained that thephilosophy of MurdaleTrue Value is to makethings easier for thecustomer, not forthemselves.

“No matter what area orwhat type of project it is, ifyou go to other placesyou’ll see that they do onething: what they think iseasiest for them. Forexample, when it comes toselling things like nuts andbolts or nails, they want toput them into packagesbecause it is the mostconvenient way for themto ring them up and keeptrack of how many theysell. But is it easier for thecustomer?”

Sheffer points out thatcustomers can try nuts onto a bolt they bring in tothe store to make sure theyget the correct size insteadof having to guess that thenuts in a package will fit. Also, Murdale will sell anynumber of many fastenersand other hardware items.

“If you want to buy justone or two, you can buy

just one or two instead of adozen or more,” he said.“Buy whatever you need. We’re not forcing you intoa package. It’s more of acustomer-delight focusrather than just meetingtheir needs. It goes waybeyond that in a nice way.”

Customer service isplentiful in everydepartment of MurdaleTrue Value. The storeboasts the largest selectionof Weber grills and grillingaccessories in southernIllinois.

“We feel that we aredominant in the grillbusiness,” he says. “Wehave expertise that mostplaces do not have ingetting the most from yourgrill. Plus we’re a Weberwarranty service center, sowe can repair grills shouldthey ever need it.”

The same goes forappliances. Murdale has avast selection of majorhome appliances.

“We offer aggressivepricing on appliances, butour advantages don’t endthere. We don’t have all ofthe other hidden fees thatmany other stores have.”

Murdale does not charge

for delivery or limitdelivery just to the curb.

“We do standardinstallation completelyfree,” Sheffer says. “We’llcome, put in the new unit, take the old one away ifyou wish and do anenvironmentally-friendlydisposal of it. We’ve donethat for years and it’s just aservice we do to take careof our customers.”

Recently Sheffer heardfrom a customer whoasked a Murdale teammember in appliances foradvice in connecting arefrigerator’s ice maker. The customer told Shefferthat the associate not onlyeducated him on how to doit, he went with thecustomer to the plumbingdepartment to make surehe got all of the correctfittings and tools for thejob.

“You come get theproducts you need, sohowever you want to do aproject, we can help you.We have the expertise andthe equipment to do it,”Sheffer says.

Everyone at MurdaleTrue Value is proud of theway they treat their

customers, but they arealso proud of theircommunities. The storefrequently supports localcharitable and civicorganizations includingBig Brothers, Big Sistersand the Boys and GirlsClub of Carbondale.Recently, Murdale wasdesignated as one of thetop five “Youth FriendlyBusinesses” in JacksonCounty by the JacksonCounty Positive YouthDevelopment Coalition.

“We try to be veryinvolved in thecommunity. We care aboutour community,” Shefferexplains. “We live here, wework here and we playhere. This is not a steppingstone to somewhere elsefor us. Our kids go toschool here, we plan onretiring here. That’s whywe try to put a lot backinto the community. Wetry to help outorganizations and we’lleven put on fun days sothe kids can come here andplay for free. It’s all aboutgiving back to thecommunity.”

LOCALLY OWNED BUSINESS

If you were to do a littleresearch, you could easilylearn that Time magazinemade its debut onAmerican newsstands in1923. That same year theNew York Yankeesunveiled a new stadium inthe Bronx called YankeeStadium, also known as“The House that RuthBuilt.” And a guy namedRoy, along with his littlebrother Walt, started alittle company that youmay have heard of. Theycalled it the Walt DisneyCompany.

Fast forward eightyseven years….the oldYankee Stadium has beenreplaced by a newer one,but the team that playsthere is more successfulthan any team in baseball.Time magazine is still arespected source for news, and Walt Disney World isone of the best-knownname brands in the world.

Another company thatgot its start that same yearis right here in our backyard. Yes, it was 1923when Ed Vogler, Sr. startedVogler Motor Company inCarbondale, IL. And likethose other companies,Vogler has stood the test of

time.The New York Yankees

didn’t win 27 World Seriesby accident. They built atradition of winning andexcellence that their fansand players have come toexpect and that they cantake great pride in. Likethe Yankees, Vogler hasspent decades cultivatingan atmosphere of familywith a strong commitmentto excellence as well. Tobe a part of the Voglerteam is a great source ofpride for its employees.

Time magazine didn’tbecome the respectednews source that it is byreporting news that wasn’tbacked up with facts andreported by people withethics. And you can’t selland service cars in thesame town for 87 yearswithout telling people thetruth, and if you don’thave strong ethics wordgets around pretty fast.

A company like Disneycontinues to be a leader incustomer satisfaction bygoing above and beyond tomake their customershappy. If something iswrong, they make it right.People travel from aroundthe globe to visit the

Disney parks. That samephilosophy has propelledVogler to the top when itcomes to customersatisfaction. They standbehind what they sell andpeople come from all overSouthern Illinois andfurther to buy from adealer they know they cantrust.

You don’t last 87 yearswithout a strongcommitment to whateverit is that you are doing. That’s the nuts and boltsof what makes VoglerMotor Company thebusiness that it is today.Vogler has remained trueto its mission statement ofstriving to make sure thatevery customer iscompletely satisfied.

They believe the way toachieve that goal is byculturing an environmentwhere long-termrelationships are thestandard. Since thebeginning in 1923, EdVogler Sr. stressed a familytradition of honesty, trustand integrity.

Those values werehanded down to sons Edand Don, who ran the storeuntil their retirements. When the time came for

them to step down, theylooked within the Voglerorganization for the next‘generation’ to carry it on.Frank Black began hiscareer at Vogler as asalesman on a ‘temporary’basis, working his way tobecome the next owner, and ended up serving thefamily business for over 50years.

Just like the Voglerfamily did with him, Franklooked within for hissuccessors, and that bringsus to where we are today in2010. Dennis Rathjen andBryan Black are thecurrent owners. Both ofthese men ‘cut their teeth’in the automotive businesslearning how to do it theVogler way. Like Frank, they started at entry levelpositions and worked theirway through thedealership until it wastheir turn to pick up thetorch and carry it forward.

So, although there isn’tanyone named Vogler whois involved in the operationof the business, the corevalues have been handeddown from generation togeneration, and areingrained in the minds ofthose who lead Vogler

Motor Company forwardtoday.

“We’re proud of whatthe Vogler family startedand we do our best tohonor that. We believethat it truly is the best wayto operate our business,”said Dennis Rathjen.“Truth, honesty andintegrity is important, especially in thisbusiness.”

Because of theatmosphere andphilosophy of the store, itis very rare for someone toleave Vogler for anotherjob in the auto industry.President and Owner,Dennis Rathjen has beenwith the company since1972. Co-owner BryanBlack started in 1977.That’s 38 and 33 yearsrespectively!

The Vogler sales staff isno different. Of the 14sales staff employees, theaverage tenure with VoglerMotor Company is over 11years. Compare that anyother store and you’ll findthat something different ishappening at Vogler MotorCompany.

New Car Sales Manager,Tim Hirsch has been withthe company for 13+ years.

“It’s really aboutrelationships. Workinghere is like being with yourfamily, and that carriesover to the way we try totreat people who dobusiness with us. They’repart of the Vogler familytoo.”

The business operatessales and service of newFord, Lincoln, Mercuryand Mazda products attheir facility across fromthe University Mall inCarbondale at 1170 EastMain Street. They alsorun a collision center andmajor parts distributioncenter from their otherlocation on 301 NorthIllinois Avenue, wherethey also own and operateone of 4 NAPA Auto Partsstores. The others are inMurphysboro, Herrin andMarion.

Time Magazine, the NewYork Yankees and WaltDisney World each havesomething in commonwith Vogler MotorCompany. The one thingVogler has that the othertop companies don’t……Vogler is locallyowned!

Affordableassistance is available to companies toevaluate current performance gaps, develop recovery plans, and receivetechnical assistance in areas such asquality systems, operating efficiency, andbringing workers up to maximumproductivity levels.

Southern Illinois manufacturerscontinue to face challenges in re-buildingfrom the recession. To stay in business, many companies reduced workforcelevels, deferred maintenance on keyequipment and delayed investments inimproving operational effectiveness.

“Understandably, smallermanufacturers have been focused onensuring their immediate survival,” saidJohn Remsey, an IMEC specialist based atSouthern Illinois University, Carbondale.“But the time is now to make sure thatthey are positioned to take advantage ofopportunities that will come as demandincreases.”

While smaller companies are lessconfident about the prospects for growthin the next year, many are changing their

business models to compete and win.“Manufacturers who once stood apart

simply by being more efficient arescrambling to fill their sales pipelines, even more so because of the downturn,”said Remsey. “Some work fromtraditional customers simply may notcome back. But there is work for thosemanufacturers who can differentiatethemselves, develop valuable productsand services, and re-purpose theiroperations to produce for differentmarkets.”

Services are available to helpcompanies restore business in currentmarkets, win business in emergingmarkets, export their products, anddevelop new products. The RecoveryCenter also focuses on helping firmsaccelerate their ability to meet customerdemand and reach peak efficiency asquickly as possible.

“Companies that take too long toproduce run the risk of losing marketshare, putting in jeopardy their long runviability,” said Remsey.

Become One of the Elite

Lance W. BurtonChief Instructor / Founder

Since opening Hawkstorm Academy in March, Lance Burton has been askedmany times why he decided on Carterville, what he is about and what his goalsare for the school. Those questions and insight as to why the program is bothdifferent from the rest and worth your time and energy will be answered here.Lance is unapologetically a born again Christian so the school for him is aplace where he can continue serving the Lord in a new way after giving all ofhis adult life to serving this great nation. He hopes to impart upon the studentsa heart of service and duty to others that they may cultivate during their timetraining here at the academy and intends to incorporate his experiences as amilitary officer, soldier, and FBI Agent into the programs. Martial arts training has been a passion of Lance’s all his life. He spent his first12 years of training in the traditional arts of Taekwondo, Hapkido, Judo, andOkinawan Karate, but later switched to Muay Thai Kickboxing before incorpo-rating Kenjuitsu, Submission Grappling, Boxing, and some Kali into his set ofskills. He’s had the good fortune of training with some of the best in the busi-ness in each style and have worked year after year at bringing them all togeth-er into one system. He tends to think out of the box and believe in teachingstudents to use any technique that works. However, he has found it beneficialto start all new students with the fundamentals of Muay Thai in order to givethem some practical skills that are easy to pick up and learn before adding inhis own personal flair.Lance is striving to provide world class martial arts instruction in a professionalenvironment. Many developmental programs including the Basic Course,Junior Warrior Course, and Women's Only Kickboxing are available, howeverthe heart of the Hawkstorm Academy is the Warrior Course. The intensity levelin that class is very high with a heavy emphasis on conditioning and developing

elite fighting skills comparable to any in the world. It is also the perfect way toprepare for military service if you feel called to that way of life. You will bepushed past old limitations and continually encouraged to set new goals higherthan the ones before.Choosing Carterville was an easy decision for Lance. His parents both gradu-ated from High School in West Frankfort and currently live in the southernIllinois area. And, now that he has left government service it is the first time in18 years that he is in the position to spend time with his parents while he stillhas the chance. Dad is a retired Illinois State Trooper and helps around thegym. Mom is a Real Estate Broker and helps with his accounting. It's a nicechange being able to occasionally grab breakfast or lunch together with his par-ents more than a couple times a year.

Hawkstorm Academy has classes 5 days a week, primarily in the evenings andis in the process of building a new gym right near the current location that willinclude an even more extensive training area, weight room, commercial gradecardio equipment, and more. Anyone who signs up now will have their mem-bership seemlessly transferred to the new training location at no extra costwhen it is complete. Early fall is the target date to have the new gym ready.

Lance is married to Dr. Stephanie Brown Burton, M.D., of St. Louis. He looksforward to teaching and training with the people of southern Illinois so don't beafraid to drop in and check out what he have to offer - whether you have noexperience at all in the martial arts or are a seasoned professional fighter, youwill find a place where you can build toward achieving any of your personalgoals.

Lance looks forward to seeing you!

Exquisite DesignsIn less than two years, Exquisite

Designs of Herrin has gained a reputationof being a shop that is, well, different.

“Since we’ve been open, I think we’vemade an impact,” says Kirk Ladd, whoco-owns the combination floral shop andantique purveyor. “We’re known to do alot of wild or crazy events.”

For example, for Exquisite Designsopened at midnight for a Christmas openhouse.

“We were open for 22 straight hours,”Ladd explains. “We’ll do anything to getpeople’s attention and that includesmaking the shop look a little differentthan anybody else’s.”

Walk into the shop, and a number ofvignettes, designed to showcase bothfloral designs and antiques. All areavailable for purchase.

“Each vignette has a totally differentlook, yet they all coordinate,” Ladd says.

Some of the sections of the storefeature a particular theme. Othersprovide customers with a way of stepping

back in time.Ladd has been a floral designer for

more than 20 years, as well as an interiordesigner. He uses both skills in the shop, which provides flowers andarrangements for a variety of events.

“We handle all occasions,” Ladd adds.“We handle flowers for weddings, specialevents, memorials and every day florals. We are a full-service florist.”

Ladd says the flowers go well with theantiques. Together, they make formemorable displays both in the shop andin customer’s homes.

“When it comes to the antiques we’realways looking for something different,”he says. “We focus on unique pieces thatwe can sell less expensively than otherantique shops.

He adds that the shop’s staff scourerssouthern Illinois looking for just the rightthings.

“We buy estates and we go all overlooking for pieces of furniture,” he says.

The old advertisingadage “Membership has itsprivileges” could easily beapplied to the SIU CreditUnion. What began morethan 70 years ago as acredit union for peopleaffiliated with SouthernIllinois UniversityCarbondale has evolvedinto a regional financialinstitution serving morethan 26,000 southernIllinoisans throughlocations in Carbondale,Marion and Metropolis.

“We’re very proud of ourSIU roots,” says ChrisSievers, marketing directorfor the SIU Credit Union,“but we’ve expanded withcommunity charters. It’seasy for anyone living orworking in southern

Sievers says that a creditunion functions like abank, with one uniquecharacteristic.

“The difference isownership,” he says.“Banks are owned by otherpeople, but all of ourmembers are owners of thecredit union.”

Membership in the SIUCredit Union is just $5.Because of the member-owners, credit unionsusually have lower feestructures and better rateson savings and loanproducts.

“All of our products andservices are basically thesame as banks, buttypically at a credit union,

members will see lowerfees, better deposit ratesand lower loan rates,” hesays.

Sievers says membersoften also see a differencein service.

“We work for themembers and ourmembers are our owners,”he explains. “We reallydeliver on offeringcompetitive products andgreat services. When youwalk in the door, we’regoing to treat you like anowner because you are anowner.”

Members of the SIUCredit Union have accessto more than 65,000 freeATMs around the country.Sievers says the network islarger than those of some
