IN THE COMMUNITY

KSPS Public Television provides on-air, online and multimedia programs that entertain, engage and educate to enrich all the communities we serve. Here are just a few examples of our initiatives and impact: Education We work closely with Spokane Public Schools on several projects, all designed to increase awareness of the work being done in the area’s largest school system. Spokane Public Schools Now is a monthly program featuring district officials, teachers, and students in an interview and taped segment format – the program is produced and broadcast by KSPS and carried on the District’s own cable and YouTube Channels; Music Education – As a way of showcasing the importance of music education and performance in our schools, we provide streaming for the area high schools’ winter band and orchestra concerts; and for the first time, we broadcast and streamed every High School Graduation, so even those who couldn’t travel were able to share in the experience. Those graduations are housed on the district YouTube site and plans are underway to do the 2017 ceremonies. American Graduate – in 2016, we continued our commitment to this nationwide effort with on-air and online segments highlighting the work done by parents, educators and others in helping to improve the Spokane graduation rates. Aquifer Outreach – in partnership with the Spokane Aquifer Joint Board, we conducted more than 50 workshops at elementary schools and events to highlight the importance of protecting the area’s sole source of drinking water. We’ve added a second educator to our team to increase the outreach opportunities. Health and Wellness Health Matters, the region’s only regularly scheduled health program, tackled a wide range of issues in 2016 – including Heart Health, Diabetes, Stroke, Pain Management and the body’s largest organ – Our Skin. Health Matters works because of the viewers who call and email their questions and the panel of medical experts who are there to answer them. We also stream the program online. Our documentary “Born To Learn – Brain Science and Early Learning” which examines the importance of building brain health in children as soon as possible, was nominated for a regional Emmy Award, and thanks to the Washington State Libraries, is now available statewide in English and Spanish. We had a record setting year for FitKids, as more than 1,000 attended our annual day of play and exercise. This year, Bob the Builder and Daniel Tiger were the featured guests, while children of all ages enjoyed the chance to enjoy the great outdoors with great friends and healthy snacks. News, Public Affairs, Documentaries and History KSPS has a long history of providing opportunities for our viewers to find out more about our issues and elected officials. In a pivotal election season, KSPS produced and/or provided debates on almost every contested race – National (US Senate and 5th Congressional,) statewide (Governor/Lieutenant Governor/Secretary of State, Washington Legislature) and local (Spokane County Commissioner.) These debates were streamed live, and remain available on ksps.org.

Community Engagement

KSPS continues to be a leading community convener. In 2016 we filled a theater with fans for the Downton Abbey finale, hosted more than a thousand children, parents and others for our annual FitKids day, and brought Buddy the Dinosaur to Spokane for a visit. And as part of our documentary Carl Maxey-A Fighting Life, a look back at the life and impact of an iconic African-American attorney and civil rights pioneer, we held a community premiere of the documentary, with Carl Maxey’s family, friends and people throughout the region in attendance. The next day, Gonzaga University Law School hosted a community forum to discuss the impact of Carl Maxey, with our documentary producers as part of the panel.

Civic Education and Engagement

KSPS continues to provide the most comprehensive coverage of local issues, initiatives and candidates:

Spokane County Spotlight – a monthly on-air and on-line program focused on county issues.

Statewide, regional and local candidate debates

Ask The Mayor - a regularly scheduled program providing a forum for the Spokane Mayor and City Council President to answer questions from the viewing audience.

KSPS Kids Forward KSPS Kids Forward is a multi-year, multi-part program that uses on-air spots, online and community events to improve the health and wellness of our community’s children. The Kids Forward segments provide advice for parents and caregivers on all aspects of child development, FitKids segments deal with the importance of diet, exercise and healthy habits, and our documentaries – Our Supersized Kids and most recently Born To Learn, provide an in depth look at key issues and how they can be addressed. The initiative is growing in awareness and scope, with local and statewide partners joining the effort.

STORIES OF IMPACT

Page 4: LOCAL VALUE IMPACTpbs.bento.storage.s3.amazonaws.com/hostedbento... · We work closely with Spokane Public Schools on several projects, all designed to increase awareness of the work

Opening Minds, Creating Experiences KSPS has always been a leader in providing experiences and opportunities - through our programming (from PBS, World, Create and our outstanding local programs and documentaries,) our outreach and finding new ways to be part of all the communities we serve.

KSPS FitKids Day started as an extension of the FitKids program, and has now grown to a much anticipated community–wide event. It’s grown from 500 in 2013 to twice that number in 2016, with Bob the Builder and Daniel Tiger as the featured guests. The entire day is free to the public and kids and from all ages attend. Thanks to our great volunteers -and support from the Spokane County Library District, the Inland Northwest Early Learning Alliance, the Washington Dental Service Foundation, and the City of Spokane Water Department- we’re able to provide plenty of supervision as well as healthy snacks and healthy activities.

This year we also added a character day at Spokane’s River Park Square Mall. Buddy form Dinosaur Train and Nature Cat, spent the day meeting families and making new friends. The Spokane County Library district volunteers were there to lead several STEM related activities.

Northwest Profiles- For more than 30 years, Northwest Profiles has been telling the stories of the people, places and history of the Inland Northwest. From Moses Lake to Montana, Calgary to Coeur d’Alene, and points in between, our team finds the things that make our lives better - or at least more interesting – like chipmunk art…with live chipmunks. These stories are also available online, providing a rich history of the place we call home.

MediaFest – MediaFest is our annual gathering of area high school students, who spend the day with media professionals, finding out about the jobs they do, how they do them, and how the students can someday have those jobs themselves. From print, online, and radio journalists, to television reporters and videographers, to documentary filmmakers- this a great opportunity for these students to have that “real world” experience.

KSPS continues to be a favorite tour stop for Leadership Spokane. This year’s class visited KSPS, spoke to members of the KSPS team and found out more about the role KSPS and public media play in our community.

Evaluating Outcomes, Measuring Impact

KSPS continues to be a welcomed partner, convener and collaborator in the region. We do that through quality programming, a willingness to listen and a desire to help improve the quality of life in all of the communities we serve. Thanks to our viewers, members and partners, we’ve been able to have that positive impact. We look forward

to doing more in the years to come.

Best programming on TV, few commercials, and

it's more progressive than local shows and

programming.

Your programs are a cut above commercial TV.

Great quality programs!! No ads-Very important!!

It's Public TV, good for the community & good for

the world!

Wife and I have been "Friends of Seven" since early

80's; since then choice of cable channels has

increased, but KSPS remains incomparable!
