AN OLD FAMILIAR HANGOUT

Here at Spokane SAVVY we have been through a number of changes since our last issue with new owners, new managers, and a whole new direction for the magazine. It’s important for us to explain what’s happening with the magazine so you, our customers, don’t hear about it from rumors or speculation.

As of December 1st 2010, Spokane SAVVY LLC purchased partial assets from the previous owner of Spokane SAVVY magazine which included the name Spokane SAVVY, the website, and the database of customers and contacts. No other physical assets were purchased from the previous owner and he is no longer involved in the ownership or operation of Spokane SAVVY. With these changes, also comes a new structure of management. Kevin Oliver was named as GM for the magazine and Judi Bailey was promoted to General Sales Manager, both of whom have experience working with previous publications. We recently sat down with the owners and created our vision and mission moving forward.

Vision StatementTo contribute valuable support to the Spokane Community

by developing a partnership through trusted relationships and becoming the premiere local venue to promote and advertise local businesses, writers, artists, and the lifestyles and people of Spokane and the surrounding communities.

Mission StatementSpokane Savvy is a local

magazine supporting and promoting growth in the community by providing the highest level of service and integrity to our clients. Fundamental to SPOKANE SAVVY’S Vision are the following principles that will guide our direction:

• Use uncompromising

standards of excellence in the creation of our content and services

• Utilize high ethical standards• Build strong relationships and promote positive customer service• Keep the focus on our client’s needs and align ourselves with their goals and values

• Participate in and support Community Events and seek to create a positive impact with the people of the Inland Northwest • Grow and profit in line with our community • Give back to our community

If at any time we don’t fulfill this vision and mission, please feel free to contact us and let us know. At Spokane SAVVY, we would like to be considered a trusted partner to our clients and a valuable source of information and entertainment for our readers.

We hope you have a wonderful and prosperous 2011!

The Staff at Spokane SAVVY

Ps: You may be wondering why we have an eagle in the background of this page. Recently, I asked for spiritual guidance to help me with challenges facing the magazine as we were going through these many changes. I met with a friend of mine who is a devout Christian, a spiritual healer, and a shaman.

Amidst the chaos and turmoil of a company and magazine in transition, came the image of an eagle soaring high overhead with an enormous wingspan; a majestic animal in its power and direction. It became one with the magazine to guide and protect it.

Therefore we proudly display our eagle as a guide as we soar along this new journey at Spokane SAVVY magazine for all to see.

You probably see it every day; it stands 5,883-feet tall and is 425 million years old; what is it? It’s Mt. Spokane, the largest Washington State Park and home of Mount Spokane Resort, which has been owned and maintained by local residents for over 100 years.

The variety of attractions the Resort offers is baffling, yet most amazing of all is that Mount Spokane Resort is a non-profit organization and has been for nearly fifteen years! The all-volunteer board of director’s main goal is to give back to this precious State Park, and like the people before them, keep it a local gem. Proximity, affordability, quality of the skiing, riding, teaching, and most importantly guest services is what this Resort’s employment team hangs their hat on. The many heads of the Resort explain that this is a family friendly environment. I understood this concept rather quickly while listening to them refer to the “Mt. Spokane Family.” What is the Mt. Spokane Family you ask? That is how the management team and employees refer to one another, but most importantly their guests. The immense number of people who take pride in caring for this Resort connect with each guest face-to-face and with a smile while welcoming them into the Mt. Spokane family. Without a doubt, the most essential, and inspiring aspect of this Resort are the people who have helped maintain and given back to the mountain they so adore. But as you will see, Mount Spokane’s history and attractions are nothing to bat an eye at.

Mount Spokane holds arguably more historical value than any other single geographical monument throughout Washington. The ‘Father of the Mountain’ Francis H. Cook, a local Spokanite, was one of the original owners of property on Mount Spokane. Over the course of a hundred years since Cook, this mountain has been blessed with people who’ve cared for it through and through. Mount Spokane became a regional state park in 1922, and

later then a National State Park. The uncommon round-dome shaped features, and natural rolling slopes were seemingly ‘created’ to ski on; which is exactly what people of Spokane have been doing on them for nearly a hundred years! Mount Spokane’s rich history of skiing benefited from the world’s first double chairlift, as well as the beautiful Vista House, which still stands today. This former lodge and banquet house is made from native granite stone and seems to blossom out from the mountain side. Truly a majestic site is seeing this historic monument crystallized beneath the snow during the winter months. The Vista House alone is something to awe at, but it can’t go without mentioning the view from the mountain which gives site to the entirety of Spokane, North Idaho lakes, the Pend Oreille River, and even peaks in Canada.

Even though this land area is the second oldest in Washington, it has been no slouch over the years keeping up with technological advances. This now modern resort which covers over 14,000 acres offers top of the line skiing slopes for every skier and snowboarder, novices or avid professionals alike. Keeping in touch with the mountain’s roots while still giving the Resort a modern feel was a plan in the 2002 renovations and this was achieved. Even modernizing the Resort’s ancestral architecture, the Vista House now includes: hot beverages, soups, chilies, and wraps, all of which are located conveniently next to a roaring fireplace. Great people, a family feel, winter recreation, comfortable lodging, hiking and biking trails in the warmer months, historic prestige, top of the line skiing and tubing hills, and of course the scenic view… Mount Spokane Resort has it all.

Every pregnant woman wants the best possible outcome in giving birth to a healthy baby. Physical fitness and a conditioned, well-toned body can contribute significantly to a woman’s experience with childbirth and post-partum recovery. Local Spokane resident Elizabeth Jones-Boswell, M.Ed. is a nationally recognized Master Pilates Teacher and author who specializes in prenatal and postpartum conditioning as well as injury prevention and rehabilitation. She created a book and DVD entitled "Exercise for Pregnancy and Beyond: A Pilates-based Approach for Women".

“Incorporating exercise into your daily activities when pregnant should include both the cardiovascular system and the muscular system for strength and flexibility”, says Jones-Boswell. “ Pelvic and abdominal toning can be achieved with Pilates and can provide a variety of benefits including a greater sense of well being of body, mind and spirit, a quicker and easier childbirth and better postpartum shape”.

Elizabeth Jones-Boswell’s personal story is unique. Her professional career began as a dancer and after a serious back injury and two back surgeries, she was told that it would be very difficult for her to dance again or endure pregnancy and childbirth. She began her training with Alan Herdman in London and she has trained and worked with Pilate’s masters, Eve Gentry, Ron Fletcher and Corola Trier. Through a Pilates-based system of exercise that she modified to advance her own rehabilitation, she developed a gentle, low-impact exercise therapy that has helped to condition pregnant women and physically rehabilitate thousands of injured men and women.

According to millions of Gallup poll* participants:

• Only 29 % of employees are engaged at work

• 54 % are not engaged in their job

• 17 % are actively disengaged

Statistics like these may make you wonder what you can do to get your people actively engaged and realizing their full potential. With labor being the largest operational expense, it’s essential to tap into your most valuable asset – your people. Here are six key questions people need answers to get them in the boat rowing the same direction:

1) What is this organization all about? Whether you have a

formal Vision, Mission and Values or a more informal method for communicating where your organization needs to be and what it stands for and believes in, the answer to this question will help build employee, customer and vendor understanding. It also sets the tone for getting everyone in the boat rowing the same direction.

2) Where is the organization going, and how is it going to get there? Typically less than 5% of people know what the organizational strategy is. Once the vision, mission and values are clarified, it is time to identify and communicate the critical few organizational priorities for the next 3-5 years, their respective goals, and the current year objectives that will successfully support achievement of those goals.

3) How and where do I fit? Employees need a line-of-site to understand how what they do contributes to the overall success of the organization. By communicating answers to the first two questions, departments and teams can begin developing and implementing plans and actions that support attainment of organizational goals. Be sure to have a method to measure progress and success, and regularly share performance with your employees.

4) What’s expected of me? People want to do a good job. In order for them to be successful, everyone needs to understand

their role and what they are being paid to accomplish. It begins with setting clear expectations and sharing how employee performance will be evaluated on an ongoing basis. It ends with everyone understanding how their contributions support individual, team, department and organizational achievement. Organizational commitment to a performance management process that develops employees to be the best they can be is of utmost importance.

5) How can I make a difference? People want to be part of a winning organization. In addition to understanding what is expected of them, it is important to encourage employees to find new and innovative ways to continuously improve how things are done and how performance is achieved. Tapping into their knowledge and creativity will lead to highly engaged people challenging themselves to contribute even more.

6) How am I doing? Employees need to know they are valued, and recognized for what they do, contributes to the success of the organization. Regular coaching and feedback are essential to people performing consistently well. A formal review process that lets people know how they are performing against expectations, or if course corrections are needed is essential to having an engaged workforce that delivers results and celebrates organizational success.

How effectively does your organization provide answers to these key questions?

If you’re like 45% of all Americans you have a New Year’s resolution. However, the statistics show the majority of people will abandon their goals after a short while. Only 8% of people are always successful in achieving their resolutions. 24% (one in four people) NEVER succeed and have failed on every resolution every year. Summarizing; approximately 3 out of 4 people will not succeed. (Survey-Opinion Corporation of Princeton, NJ, The survey has a margin of error of 3 %.)

If you truly desire real long-term change however, there is hope. Instead of making a resolution which you will most likely abandon after awhile; for real change you need a mission and vision statement for your life as well as your business.

Begin With the End in Mind

When you begin with the end in mind you are living purposely and the results often are better than imagined. You are no longer just focused on one thing, such as a resolution to lose weight, but you realize that what you are really seeking is to be healthy and vibrant; losing weight is just one facet of the big picture. Having a bigger purpose makes it much more likely you will follow through.

In order to know what you would like your end result to be, one must understand the "bigger picture". Having a mission and vision for your life and/or business is like having the model for the "bigger picture." Picture a compass or road map giving you directions. In his classic book and signature program, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”, Stephen Covey talks about how important it is to create a personal mission statement. A personal mission statement is like a constitution by which you make all the decisions of your life.

Some Benefits of a Personal Mission Statement:

• Provides focus

• Clarifies what is important to you

• Helps you create the life you want instead of seeing things "just happen"

• Guides your daily actions

• Gives you a greater sense of meaning and purpose

Where to Begin:

For Real Change Try

A PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT

Page 11: Spokane SAVVY - February

11February 2011 SpokaneSavvy.com

Dreams and Change

Start by answering these questions:

1) If money and time was no object what would I choose to do with my life?

2) What are three important goals I wish to accomplish in my lifetime?

3) What do I really love to do when I’m working?

4) I want others to remember me as a person who….

5) My gifts and natural strengths are…..

6) What do I want to contribute in the future for the betterment of others?

7) What am I most passionate about? ((When I’m doing this I am always happy)

Realize this is a process, so give yourself the time to really think about your responses.

Congratulations, you’ve started a very important process! You've taken steps towards getting clarity on your mission and vision. You are much more likely to follow through with this big picture. You will often see common themes as you continue to explore the possibilities and move towards a greater potential for your life/business.

Check-in TimeBE HONEST WITH YOURSELF

Right now, as you are reading this, take a quick moment to

check in with yourself. Take a deep relaxing breath. Maybe one or two more, and focus on your body. After a moment, shift your focus on your life, right now in this moment. Choose a word or short phrase to describe one or both, your body and your life. Is all at ease? Perhaps you choose such examples as content, compassion, gratitude, peace, happy, satisfied, all is right, light, strong, empowered. Or maybe you are in touch with stressed, chaotic, fragmented, angry, depressed, resentful, heavy, numb, tense, in pain, or something else that truly resonates with you. If using a scale of one to ten is easier, that's okay. The first words are one and the second set of words rest at five or greater --ten is in-your-face-boiling.

What is happening in our lives and how we feel and respond to them affect our bodies, and our bodies can only take so much. Think of the less desirable feelings as signals that something needs healing. The stronger more intense the signal, the more urgent is the message trying to get our attention.

Radical Forgiveness is the bridge to your empowerment and the peace you yearn for. It is a simple, quick self-help process that is life transforming and easy to learn. It's not counseling, but it is therapeutic.

So, check-in. Listen. Be honest with yourself. Get the message. Is it less than desirable? Act upon it now. Peace and empowerment await you!

The Symphony Within

TRANSFORM THE CHATTER IN YOUR BODY

Your body is quite the chatterbox! Body parts, organs, and systems are in constant communication, playing a symphony within. The question is how does that symphony sound? Every day stresses, injuries, traumas, and memories all contribute to communication breakdowns, creating imbalances in your body, mind, and spirit. Reconnecting these lines of communication enables the body's internal mechanisms to function at optimal levels, producing a pleasing symphony within.

The BodyTalk system is a revolutionary approach to integrative mind/body medicine that restores communication between every single cell, atom, and system within the body-mind complex. It can be used as a stand-alone system or combined with other therapies such as massage, physical therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic, etc.

The beauty of BodyTalk is that it works with the innate wisdom of the body. Our bodies know how to heal but occasionally need to be reminded of that. The BodyTalk practitioner identifies what is ready to be healed by discovering communication links within the body-mind complex that are ready to be re-synched.

That is the goal of BodyTalk: to transform the chatter into a pleasing symphony.

Are you among the 45% of American adults that will make one or more resolutions this year, only to let them slip away before they even get Browne’s Addition plowed?

Considering the fact that 30.6% of adults are overweight (according to the Center for Disease Control) with numbers climbing, weight loss and exercise are among the top New Year’s resolutions made. Sadly 90% of those who join health and fitness clubs will stop going within the first 90 days. So how can you get in better shape and maybe lose a few pounds in a more enjoyable way, while not feeling like you wasted your entire resolution? Better yet, how do you achieve weight loss and exercise goals when the icy temperatures dip and the snow gods send their loyal crew of snowflake makers all over the Spokane area?

Find the hat, gloves and long underwear and consider trekking through the woods to see what is on Mother Nature’s menu! How about awakening the adventurist spirit and try snowshoeing along the Fish Lake Trail? Or grab the poles for some Nordic walking in Riverside State Park, or even cross country skiing at Mt. Spokane.

Originating in Central Asia, snowshoes date back about 6,000 years. While the invention of snowshoes made winter travel more manageable, today, about 1.4 million people enjoy this sport. Not only is it fun but it packs a whopping “calorie burn” especially if you pick up the pace. A study from the University of Wisconsin looked at calorie burn and how much it increases when picking up the pace. The study found a calorie expenditure of 500 to 1000 calories in 60 minute intervals, depending on your pace.

Nordic walking is another great outdoor activity. It mirrors cross country skiing without skis. This is a total body workout; legs, core, back and upper body come into play. Special Nordic poles help propel the body forward while walking which stabilizes the core muscles and you engage your upper body more. There is less impact on the hip, knee and foot. The ideal pole length should be about 65% of your body height. There are some beautiful areas to walk in winter around here, especially along the Centennial Trail or even as close as Riverside State Park at the Bowl and Pitcher.

Ever tried cross country skiing? This is a total body workout and can be a very intense cardiovascular exercise. The forward motion uses about 40% of the upper body and depending on the technique, skating or classic, the motion also engages the quads, glutes and hip flexors. This sport is growing rapidly and encourages all types of athletic abilities to experience this great outdoor activity.

So, when the weather outside is frightful, think about these outdoor activities to get you moving. Remember, movement

requires energy and that burns calories. Calories in, versus calories burned, is the very simple solution to weight loss. Finding an activity you like, will make burning those calories a goal you can achieve.

Have you ever wondered what makes a person want to abuse their body to the extreme limits in an endurance race? At Spokane SAVVY, we wondered that same thing, and asked, “What type of person does this and what makes a person want to do this?” We then realized one of our own staff members was crazy enough to do it. So we asked him to chronicle his progress in our magazine. Here’s his story:

My name is Jeremiah Keevy, and I am dedicated to finish the Ironman triathlon in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on June 26, 2011. My trek to the finish line can be followed though this monthly column where I will explain my training practices and express my hardships in hopes that my trials and tribulations will inspire people to reach their full potential through dedication and practice.

The Ironman is considered by experts to be the “toughest one-day event in the world.” It consists of a 2.4 mile swim in Lake Coeur d’Alene, a 112 mile bike ride that starts in downtown Coeur d’Alene and loops around surrounding suburbs, and a 26.2 mile run starting downtown and spanning along the scenic Centennial Trail.

Participants of the race are given a strict 17 hour time limit which starts at 7:00AM and ends at midnight.

People ask me all the time, “Why are you doing it?!” with a sort of intense anticipation waiting for some sort of philosophical explanation for my lifestyle. “Because I can.” I promptly return.

What an intense challenge! This is the ultimate test of physical endurance. It demands much commitment and discipline, this is more than an event, it’s a lifestyle. I am doing this for myself, to prove that I have what it takes and with dedication I can do anything. My endurance training is not only for my body, it’s also for my mind as I teach myself that nothing is impossible.

My physical health before I registered for the race last summer was poor at best. My diet consisted of microwavable frozen meals, cigarettes, and cheap beer. For exercise I would suffer through a few miles running once every week as my lungs couldn’t handle much more. Years ago when I was attending college and even in high school, fitness was a priority to me, my diet was good and the gym was a second home. I replaced this priority with past

time activities like watching television, going to the bar, and binge drinking on the weekends.

My co-worker Molly Maloney asked me to join her in the Ironman event last year, the day before the 2010 race; of course I denied thinking there was no possible way I could be in that sort of shape in only a year. Internalizing the thought that I was defeated so easily by the idea of a full day of exercise my mind changed. “This will be good for me.” I said, “I’m doing it!” Registration paid and last cigarette smoked, I was on my way to becoming an Ironman, and I haven’t ever been more excited.

How do you “freestyle” swim? Am I really supposed to breath out of my nose and mouth with my head submerged while my arms pull my body through the water? Running and biking is one thing, a concept I can grasp, but swimming has never sparked an interest to me and I have never swam any given distance in my life. Luckily I have many friends in the fitness industry and I was referred to Dee Frazer at the Salvation Army’s Kroc Center in Coeur d’Alene. I explained my situation and she replied, “We will believe in you until you believe in yourself.” I began taking multisport endurance

swimming classes at the Kroc center last September, and can say I am now really starting to understand why so many people love the water.

With the purchase of a cheap used road-bike on EBay and new running shoes my training has commenced spectacularly. So much so, I know that after I cross the finish line in downtown Coeur d’Alene it will only start my life as an athlete. I now understand my body more, I know its limits and am learning how to push it to great lengths in order to build something that I can use to compete with others in similar mind sets. Through long days of running on the trail or biking to Spokane, the fatigue felt deep in my muscles makes getting out of bed that much easier, doing things that I once complained about a breeze because my body is conditioned to something so much more intense. I am in a sort of metamorphosis, forcing myself to transform from a soft malleable unhealthy mass to solid iron, the finish line isn’t far ahead!

Standard Print has been a fixture in Spokane as far back as 1909 according to the city directory. Their phone suffix 2985 has been the same since phones were available. Eugene DeSmeth, a Belgian Civil Engineer bought the business sometime around 1920 and ran the business from the Hyde Building in downtown Spokane. His son John continued to operate the business from that location. Standard Blue Print as the business was called then, did a majority of the printing for Farragut Navel Station during WWII.

In 1960 the business was moved to Sprague Avenue in the City Ramp Garage complex. John’s daughter Kathy started working afternoons in the family business in high school, and after she got married, John asked her husband Steven Lunderg to join the business in 1977. John DeSmeth passed away unexpectedly in October 1978, leaving the business to his daughter and son-in-law.

The business moved again in 1989 to its present location at 256 West Riverside, what was once the Old National Bank (ONB) branch building. Following the family tradition, Krista Lundberg started working part time after high school, and when she got married, her husband Leon Davis joined the business. After 30

years Steven and Kathy are transitioning the business to the fourth generation in this family owned business.

Standard Digital Print had a number of “firsts” when it came to printing. They were the first to produce blueprints and the last to offer blueprints with the Diazo process in Spokane. They were also the first company in the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene area to offer color copies. Standard Digital now has the capacity to print in color up to 56 inches wide by any length, and can scan in color up to 54 inches wide by any reasonable length and thickness. They even have the capability to mount and laminate up to 60 inches wide by any length.

No longer is Standard Digital just a small blueprint shop in downtown Spokane. They have evolved into a high production digital print company offering everything from blueprints to vehicle graphics, outdoor signage, wall graphics, floor graphics, window graphics and custom contour cut decals or vinyl lettering for almost any application. They also sell, service, and provide supplies for large format printing.

Standard Digital Print strives to produce the highest quality prints for the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene area, and have done so now for over 100 years.

Exceptional People!

On behalf of the real estate community, Happy New Year! With all of the doom and gloom portrayed in the media, one wonders why I might be so excited to think 2011 will be a happy new year for the real estate industry. Lately, I’ve met many individuals who are discouraged. Although it’s understandable, I remain positive and excited about what 2011 holds. I do want to give you some real encouragement.

I don’t know of a better opportunity for buyers, and believe-it-or-not, sellers right now; especially those sellers who are also buyers. We could see one of the nation’s largest redistributions of wealth due to the current opportunities being presented in real estate right now. It seems a contradiction in terms to say that there are opportunities

in hard times. Those experiencing these hard times I trust will be taken care of when it is all said and done. Good investment advice has been to, “Sell high and buy low”. There has never been a better time to buy low than now. If you are not only a seller, but simultaneously a buyer, this especially holds true. You may not be afforded the opportunity to sell your house at the higher marks we saw in 2004-2007 in Spokane, but if you have a well-maintained product that will provide you fair market price, the opportunities out there for what you can buy are extraordinary.

Let me leave you with a story to illustrate. I sold a home in 2007 to a family who has now outgrown that home. When I presented them with a market analysis, they realized they would be taking a loss as sellers. However, when we went “shopping” as buyers, what they learned is that houses that were listed at one point for $650,000-$695,000, are now in their price range below $400,000. They are moving forward; taking a loss on the one side, but experiencing a substantial gain on the other. This is the opportunity of this market.

I’m excited that I am now receiving offers on my listings, acquiring new listings, and representing new buyers. Other Realtors I have talked to in the last week have said the same thing. We're all quite blown away by this sudden “busy-ness”; we can't think that we're the only ones. Please hang in there. I'm optimistic. As someone who believes in the power of marketing, my marketing efforts will NOT slow down. Additionally, with interest rates on a slow climb, I urge you to make sure that you, your family, and friends don’t miss out on the opportunity to invest NOW in real estate.

Nosey Parker is a sleuth and is always on the hunt for the best local shopping and services in the Inland Northwest. The Nosey Parker Experience includes a blog, social media, a guidebook and in January 2011, the Inland Northwest’s first shopping and service smart phone application on the iPhone, Droid, Blackberry and as a web application. The Nosey Parker Experience launched the first guidebook in September 2008 featuring local boutiques and services. Women bought the guidebook and signed up on the website to receive newsletters and participate in social media to stay “in the know”. Weekly blog posts also keep women informed of new stores, product launches, sales and parties. Nosey Parker is also used as an endorsement tool for businesses that are looking to market to a niche demographic of women. So who is Nosey Parker? After a long search, Nosey Parker has been found! Samantha Tolley, a resident of Liberty Lake, has accepted the position of Principal Fashionista for the Inland Northwest market of Nosey Parker. “I have followed Nosey Parker Inland Northwest for a long time. I enjoyed it so much, the next step for me was to be Nosey Parker everyday!”Samantha Tolley, as Nosey Parker, will also help launch this column for Spokane Savvy Magazine “Ask Nosey Parker”, questions from fans and advice from Nosey Parker regarding fashion and services.

Q: Women in the Inland Northwest wear a lot of ski vests as fashion in the winter. Is this okay and if so, what kind looks the best?

A: I agree. I see a lot of North Face vests this time of year with henley's and jeans. There is nothing wrong with this look however, it is very easy to look like the Michellin Man. Go for vests that define your waist. I've included a picture to show the difference.

GOT A QUESTION?Ask Nosey Parker on

Spokane SAVVY’sFacebook page!

Q: Is it possible to look fabulous while skiing without spending a lot of money?

- Diane P., Spokane Valley

A: Absolutely! Fresh powder requires a Winter-fresh look! The key to saving

money is to buy jackets, hats and gloves that can convert to everyday wear as well. Bold parkas like red and cobalt

blue will stand out from the blacks and browns littering the slopes. By the way, pink is overdone, so avoid. Throw on some hip sunglasses and really that is all you need to go with what you may

already have in your “winter ski closet”. For an even hipper style, wear insulated,

water proof ski leggings tucked into quilted snow boots for looking “oh so

chic” drinking hot chocolate after a run. You can wear this look all winter too! By the way, take care of your skin! Protect your skin on the slopes from cold, dry

or windy climates by using a great moisturizer with SPF.

Load up the kids and try the fastest snow tubing hill in the

Pacific Northwest! It’s an incredible ride...

24817 N. Mt. Spokane Park Drive Mead , WA 99021• 509-238-9114

The perfect place to “stay and play”, year-round, is waiting just for you at the entrance to Mt. Spokane State Park. This is the vision Sam and Karen Deal had almost ten years ago.

The Deal’s met at college in North Carolina then moved to Utah, where Sam and Karen raised their two children, George and Michelle. After living there for twenty years and a short time in Las Vegas, they were ready for a change. Sam had been to Spokane a few years earlier on a business trip and thought it would be a great place to take a family vacation. While here, they visited Bear Creek Lodge and fell in love with the area and the resort. The previous owner made the Deal’s an offer they couldn’t resist and in November 2002, they became the new owners.

Bear Creek Lodge is a rustic, “mini resort” perfect for a weekend getaway, wedding, family reunion, corporate meeting, retreat or private party. This resort has tons to offer with campsites and activities ranging from hiking and mountain biking to snowmobiling and snow tubing. In fact, Bear Creek Lodge is home to the fastest snow tubing hill in the Pacific Northwest. The tubing hill is now faster and longer than ever before! George has prepared and reshaped the tubing hill and with new tubes and plenty of snow, you can’t beat this for family fun. The lodge also has the closest overnight accommodations to Mt. Spokane Ski Resort and offers several winter and summer packages.

Sam and Karen, along with their children, have made many renovations and improvements over the years. The restaurant and lounge give the feeling of a cozy, mountain cabin. The rooms are

spacious and decorated with log furniture and beautiful quilted bedding. The lodge has a lounge and a great restaurant where Karen and George create hearty, American meals that can satisfy any appetite.

The Deal family has been working tirelessly to make this “the place to go” in Spokane. In 2003, they added a large outdoor garden area, making this the perfect place for an outdoor wedding, reception, reunion, private party, or small concert. Bear Creek Lodge has something to offer everyone and the Deals are waiting to make your special event unforgettable.

Incomparable. Ever-entertaining. Genius. Just some of the words that have been used to describe Reed McColm, the Artistic Director for Interplayers Professional Theatre in Spokane. When asked if he agrees with these descriptors, in his typical self-deprecating manner, Reed replies “inevitably, ‘genius’ gets followed by the word ‘but’… so I’d rather not be called these things.” But his résumé speaks for itself, proclaiming such accomplishments in

writing and acting as the theatrical production of his play Together Again for the First Time, which eventually was released on the Lifetime Movie Network.

An old hand at theater, Reed has worked for such prestigious institutions as the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, and Sundance Playwright Institute in Utah. Reed came to Spokane in 2003, like so many others new to the city, to be closer to family. Working for 15 years in Los Angeles writing for television and film, he became increasingly disenchanted with the treadmill of the production machine that defines L.A., where not a moment was spent living in

the moment, but always looking toward ‘the next big thing’. That’s why when Reed stepped into Spokane and began getting involved with local theater groups, he found something “refreshing to his soul.”

He has been involved in various capacities at Spokane Civic Theater, Centerstage and Actors Repertory Theater before taking on the role of Artistic Director with Interplayers. His vision for the theatre is for “our fiction to illuminate their reality – I want to bring plays to Spokane that engage patrons, and encourage them to find a connection to the product on stage, improving their understanding of their own lives. Opus may teach you how a string quartet works, but ultimately it is about relationships, how and why they fall apart over time. Privilege relates to money problems – something everyone understands. Our hope is that we find something each audience member can relate to. Everything we do is about relatable emotions, plights and plots.”

Reed is working hard to earn the trust of theater-goers in Spokane – his goal is to have every patron telling their friends “you should see this, you will find this interesting – you’re going to find this worth your time.” Reed feels an obligation to theater patrons in Spokane to bring them the newest, most meaningful plays he can, while working simultaneously to create an excellent workplace for professional actors. He believes working with him at Interplayers is a chance to block out all of the worries of “how am I going to make a living at this and make it a place where everyone laughs every day, everyone feels safe to do their work.”

Reed loves the enthusiasm of the people who live in Spokane – he is impressed by the level of commitment to make the city a better place to live for residents and their families. “People are friendly, here – polite and kind – there is such a small town feel, without actually being a small town. I’m so glad I’m here!” We are too!

When Rick Purcell decided to name his new family owned and operated business “The Chill Spot”, he put a lot of pressure on himself. With a name as unique

as this, one can’t help but expect several

attributes of the business to reflect its given name. Well,

I’m happy to announce that this new local frozen yogurt

house is more than living up to said name. The Chill Spot gives you the opportunity to create your own

frozen yogurt masterpiece, supplying you with eight different flavors of yogurt and over twenty different toppings from M&Ms to low fat granola. Not to mention their lunch menu which holds their signature paninis and soups. Quite possibly more important than all of that, the Chill Spot is, exactly what its name pronounces, just a place to chill.

This new hang out spot is a family friendly environment, having board games on site, flat screen TVs, and even live bands. Not

looking for all that ruckus? Chill by the fireplace and read a book, or finish up that homework all while sipping on your freshly brewed coffee. The most exciting aspect of the Chill Spot is how multi-faceted it truly is. Go and explore for yourself which, if not all of these aspects, makes you fall in love with this new and unique place.

Rick Purcell who grew up in Tri Cities, has been in Spokane for over twenty years and mentions that he truly wants to get involved with the community. The former school teacher at local Grant and Trent Elementary explains that his main goal of this new business is to give back to the community. “I really just wanted to create a place where the youth of this community can come and hang out…” explains Purcell, “…a place where people can feel safe and comfortable.” Not only is Purcell giving the community a new place to hang out, he also has made plans for future fundraising with nearby North Central and Shadle Park High School. “I’ve contacted both schools, and let them know we are more than willing to support and help with any school program fundraising” says Purcell.

Certainly, Rick Purcell with the help of his new ‘Chill Spot’ has all the ingredients needed (including a cherry on top, should you choose) to be a successful business and a great help to the community for years to come; if nothing else… why not just get that sweet tooth under control with the healthy choice, frozen yogurt!

What could be more sexy, low lights, candles, a raging fire and c…h…o…c…o...l…a…t…e. For most of us just a small luscious bite brings happiness. Wrapped up in the language of love it says ‘I love you’, ‘I want you’ it says: Just me, you and well, you know.

Naturally to write about chocolatiers I had to pick up a few pieces from each gourmet. What a journey into a different world one where no diet could ever follow. Since I was on a hunt for the best flavors, looks and presentations, I had to keep myself from purchasing copious amounts of each delightful morsel. And I narrowed it down to several exceptional flavors. I’m not saying any of the other chocolate makes in Spokane aren’t wonderful it’s just these each seem to have that ingredient that can’t be purchased, the love of the process. They don’t make chocolate to sell chocolate, they make chocolate because they love to make chocolate. That is visible in the taste, and the look of each piece. An artwork for the heart.

Whether you want to indulge your own sweet tooth or spoil your lover, chocolate is the first thing to consider. No other candy quite offers the same emotional satisfaction as chocolate. Spokane is fortunate to be the home to a few fantastic chocolatiers. Each with a rich history of slaving over ingredients made for kings. Each has perfected their craft and

offers the food of the divine. From Pixie Dust Chocolates a maker of hard bite sized and molded chocolates that dance across star filled eyes, and DeVerne Augustus, owner of the French Quarter who’s truffles are mouthwatering smoothness, stunning the taste buds with their perfection. How about Bruttles with dark chocolate caramels and cashew sprinkles that fill your senses with a festival

of flavor. Then there is Chocolate Myracles that offers delightful bites full of tantalizing sweetness and beautiful shapes, plus Halletts Chocolates whose assortment of bon-bons can make one swoon. And I tried but I can’t leave out Spokandy, the Joie parfum of peppermint permeates the room as one enters their storefront and the experience is unique for that and its color wheel of mints for every occasion. Each has a unique flavor that offers the memory of a very special gift and no devotee could turn away from bringing home something from one of these chocolate makers. Not quite past my prime I still lick my lips in anticipation since I have hinted to my husband that chocolate from one of these chocolatiers, the best locally made chocolate in town, will get him my best sugar kiss on Valentine’s.

Social MediaIS IT REALLY THAT SOCIAL?

It seems like everyone is on the social media bandwagon these days. I recently heard a story of a teenager and her 80 year-old grandmother wanting to be her BF on Facebook. Has the whole social media gone too far and is it really that social?

I remember a time when you wanted to talk to someone you called them on the phone and actually talked to them. In person. In complete sentences. Now it seems all the younger generation knows how to do is write in hieroglyphics on a little 2 inch screen that is barely the size of a postage stamp. (For all you young kids out there, that was something we used to mail real letters with.)

Yes, I personally jumped on that bandwagon a few years ago, not out of want, but out of necessity. It seemed that my oldest daughter and I were losing touch with each other and finding it harder and harder to communicate. So I decided if she couldn’t, or didn’t want to communicate on my level, I would adapt to hers. Thus, my first attempt at texting and what a mess that was! I quickly learned that if you have large fingers and tired eyes, texting may not be the easiest form of communication. I understand why they outlawed it while driving. I don’t know how many times I was trying to read a paragraph of nonsense words on a screen designed to have no more than a 7 digit phone number on it, to look up and fill my pants because I almost hit a

tree. Thank you lawmakers! Yea, yea, yea, I could have figured that one out on my own, but if it’s legal, why not.

I have learned to text better though my kids still laugh at me. The biggest problem I now have is with the touch screen. I can’t feel the letters so these big ol’ fingers I still have make it even harder to text. The good news is, I do have a better relationship with my kids because I communicate with them on their level.

As for online social media, I have also become quite skilled, at least in my opinion, with Facebook. Personally, I feel that it’s a little too informational with certain topics that most people don’t give a rat’s behind about. However, I have learned more about my kids, and their habits, than I knew I would, good and bad. (Whew, the bad scares me.) And though there is way too much mindless information, there are a lot of ways to make Facebook work for your business as well as just a social avenue. If you don’t have a Facebook page for your business, you may be missing out on business.

So with the hundreds of new friends I now have connected to me in various media, it seems I should be very popular. The reality is, I’m still the same boring guy I was a couple of years ago. Am I more social? Probably not, but I do know how to say words with only one letter or as simple as possible; c u later!

Over the years, we have seen the positive changes going on at the Double Tree Hotel in downtown Spokane. But unless you have stayed or dined there, you have missed the changes going on inside and one of those is Spencer’s Restaurant. Spencer’s is not your ordinary hotel restaurant. It is high end dining at its finest with the best prime beef and the best preparations. Chet Ortman, a Spokane Native, is the General Manager. He has a love for the restaurant and hotel industry. He started his restaurant career back in high school at ”Mr. Steak” on Division.

From there he progressed and worked for years for Restaurant Unlimited at some of the finer restaurants in Seattle and as far south as California. As his kids got older, he chose his home town, Spokane, to settle down in. Because of his reputation as a great chef and manager, when the plans came to bring Spencer’s to the Spokane community, Chet was the choice of hire to help bring the restaurant into existence. “It is not just having the best food product to serve but the preparations must be the best as well. We cook our meat in a way that seals the outer edge so the juices stay within to make the

best tasting steak you will ever have in Spokane,” says Chet. “We also buy our meat locally in Washington and our seasonal foods in Spokane. Supporting local is important to us. “He also expressed that there is hardly a turnaround on the staff because it is a great group of people with the same heart for bringing the best dining experience to the Spokane area. Spencer’s takes pride in that good old fashion service. Jeromy Farnsworth who is the new Executive Chef has been with Spencer’s 12 years. He’s a Spokane native and earned his Culinary Degree at Spokane Falls and is raising his own family here in Spokane. Like I said, Spencer’s is not your ordinary restaurant, it’s an exquisite dining experience so when you want to spoil yourself, go to Spencer’s.

February 16, 1890, is a proud day for members of Calvary Baptist Church, the oldest black church in the entire state of Washington. It has its roots in difficult times; days when Washington was yet a territory and its people lived the hard life of pioneers struggling to build a life for themselves on undeveloped, unfamiliar lands.

The railroads brought many people to Spokane in the 1800’s, in search of a better life. Among them were blacks searching for a niche to call their own that came in search of homes, work and places of worship. They found no shortage of churches in Spokane, but none they could call their own; none that could truly be called “their” church home.

Early in 1890, a small group of citizens gathered “to consider the propriety of organizing a church.” The name Calvary Baptist Church was adopted, and thus was founded the city’s first historically black church.

Its founding transcended race and gender, as the white “brethren,” along with the female pastor, from Spokane’s First Baptist Church provided both meeting place and sermon on that February day. Ten years later, a local author noted that the venture “is requiring many sacrifices on the part of the little band… but they are a heroic, Christ-loving people, and will succeed.” Early pioneer Peter Barrow had helped establish and was pastoring the church at the time. By 1908, Rev. James McPherson had arrived “to work along practical as well as religious [lines] for the betterment of [our] race in this city.”

Emmett Reed served Calvary from 1919-1961, remembered as “a man ahead of his time” in understanding the needs of African American youth. During pre- and early Civil Rights

days, one historian claimed that Calvary “played a tremendous part in the stabilizing process by giving strength to its members so they could cope with the environment [in which] they were living.” The church was also the birthplace of many African American community, fraternal, and civic organizations.

Calvary Baptist was not only a house of worship but a community gathering place for blacks. It was the meeting place for organizations such as the Colored Men’s Business League, the Masonic Lodge, and the local chapter of the NAACP. If a meeting place was needed, Calvary’s doors were open, especially during the time of the equal rights movement in America, when Calvary was the local meeting place for all to discuss these important issues.

Under the guidance of Rev. Leon T. Garcia in the early ‘70’s Calvary Baptist Church also opened its doors for the first Head Start program in Spokane, a program which is still very active today.

Over the years, many heroes of unselfish devotion have passed through Calvary’s doors. Because of them, this church

still stands, survives and thrives. In 2010, Calvary celebrated its 120th anniversary.

Laura is a Post Falls residence and graduated from NIC in Fine Arts in 2009. Because of her natural creativity, she began her career as a graphic designer well before she graduated and has been designing magazine content for over 3 years. Her

involvement in local modeling has also added to her experience in design and fashion. You may have recognized some of modeling work in our past issues as well as other events in the Spokane Community.

Kevin is a Spokane native through and through although not originally born here. His father was stationed at Fairchild when Kevin was going into the 4th grade, “so it’s pretty close to being “from” here.” he explained. As a graduate of Shadle

Park and EWU in Radio-TV, his passion has always been in the media. After working as an award winning Producer/Director for over 12 years, Kevin went into production management at KAYU TV and then KREM TV. Kevin always loved working with clients so when the opportunity to get into sales came along he jumped at it and became the Sales Manager of KREM.com in its infancy and helped launch it to become a top media website in the area. He then worked in publishing

for over 5 years with Lee NW Publishing and Target Media NW where he managed multiple publications in eastern Washington. Currently Kevin is the GM/Chief Bottle Washer of Spokane SAVVY where he has worked since last summer. “We’ve been through a lot of changes this past month, but have come out much stronger and hopefully, smarter”. He added.

The staff thinks he’s a jerk most of the time but they love him none the less.

Jeremiah studied fine art at the University of Idaho with an emphasis in painting. After leaving the University, he moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho where he continued his education at North Idaho College and received a degree in Graphic Design. Recently Jeremiah has done many projects with local businesses helping them establish a presence on the internet via web

design and social networking. With Spokane SAVVY, Jeremiah focuses on creating a dynamic and user friendly website that reflects the company's magazine. He also writes articles and columns, does some photography and designs ads. You can

follow Jeremiah's journey to completing his first Ironman triathlon in the up and coming issues of Spokane SAVVY.

Judi is a Washington Native recently relocated from Puyallup Washington to Spokane. After raising their kids, she and her husband decided to move to a dryer climate and chose Spokane because they had family here. Judi worked

over 8 years for Morgan & Chase Publishing on a series of coffee table books titled “Treasures of Western Washington”, “Treasures of Oregon Coast”, “Washington Community Treasures” and was co- author of “Treasures of Washington & Oregon “ . Although she has done a lot of research and writing, she is known for her wonderful sales ability and

interacting with people. She has a heart for community and business and is looking forward to putting her time and energy into this community magazine and helping connect people together.
