Newham Local Plan – What is it?
• The Local Plan is the key planning document which the Council uses to assess planning applications and to manage growth, regeneration, and development in Newham
• The Plan’s policies address housing, employment, green infrastructure, town centres, design, community facilities, transport, environment (climate change/flood risk), open spaces, and site allocations.
• All Councils are required to have an up-to-date Local Plan.
• Our Local Plan needs to be consistent with national (NPPF) and regional (London Plan) planning policy
A new Local Plan – Why?
• We are refreshing ours so we can plan for the next 15 years and respond to our key challenges
• It will deliver the Council’s priorities of:
• recovering from the impact of Covid-19
• addressing the climate emergency
• tackling racism, inequality and disproportionality
• creating a healthier Newham
Why is this relevant to residents?
The Plan helps the Council make major decisions that affect
residents, such as:
• The types of homes Newham needs and their location
• The look and designation of high streets and shops
• Protecting local heritage, community facilities, and
places of worship
• Improving air quality and greening the borough
A new Local Plan – How?
• The review of the Local Plan will take three years and we are at the first stage in the process
• We are engaging on the Issues & Optionsdocument, which identifies Newham’s needs, challenges, and opportunities, and how they may be addressed through the Local Plan
• This consultation runs from October 18th to December 17th 2021
Engagement Strategy Principles
• Humility and empathy• Accessible and inclusive – to give everyone
equal opportunities, we need to tailor our approach to meet different needs
• Fun and easy - wide range of flexible techniques and technologies.
• Facilitating and extending relevance to broader audiences
• Strengthen and empower young members of the community
• Use and apply residents’ feedback and existing evidence
