Dear Friends,
Inspiring hope among our clients can be a challenge considering the obstacles they face, which results in their seeking assistance from Loaves & Fishes. Some have been laid off after decades of employment; others have endured severe health problems that have depleted their savings. Each story is eye-opening when we consider the growth of suburban poverty across the country, and how this has impacted our neighbors. Fortunately, thanks to Loaves & Fishes’ multi-faceted ap-proach to hunger relief, our distressed neighbors are reassured and given the tools to rebuild their finances and their lives.
Take Brian’s story for example. At 66 years old, Brian was ready to retire, but due to medical issues, he was struggling to complete this transition. Brian’s wife, Isabelle, was battling breast cancer, and the couple drained their emergency funds paying for surgery and other medical expenses. By visit-ing Loaves & Fishes, Brian and Isabelle were able to save money by utilizing our grocery assistance program, which benefited Isabelle’s health because they received nutritious foods; plus, Brian par-ticipated in our financial literacy class to learn more about budgeting as he prepares for retirement. Though they arrived at Loaves & Fishes unsure about their future, Brian and Isabelle received the assistance they needed to restore their hope.
The Power of Hope Annual Report, preceded by our Power of Community and Power of Compas-sion Annual Reports, is a demonstration of where Loaves & Fishes has been the past 30 years and what we aspire to achieve in the future. In June, Loaves & Fishes Community Pantry became Loaves & Fishes Community Services to better represent our full-service model that benefits the physi-cal, mental and financial well-being of our clients. This evolution paves the way for programmatic growth and positions Loaves & Fishes as an anti-poverty organization seeking to find sustainable solutions to hunger.
We are excited to begin this new era—Loaves & Fishes 3.0—made possible through the generosity of our supporters and advocates, many of whom are listed in this report. As we look to the future, we anticipate empowering more low-income families toward self-sufficiency. By working together, we can inspire the hope that is necessary to motivate these families to overcome their barriers and achieve their goals.
Sincerely,
Charles P. McLimans Peggy BeataPresident/CEO Chair, Board of Directors

Finding the Courage to Succeed“I am confident now using the computer,” exclaims Sonia, a Loaves & Fishes’ client, “it has made such a difference in my life!”
Sonia, a mother of three, was afraid to learn about computers at first; however, after attend-ing a school meeting where computers and email were being used exclusively by other parents, Sonia felt embarrassed that she did not know how to use one and made it her goal to learn.
After picking up a program brochure at Loaves & Fishes, Sonia enrolled in our computer classes, taught on-site in collaboration with People’s Resource Center. After a couple classes, the in-structor informed Sonia that her English was too limited to be successful in the computer class. “It was hurtful,” Sonia reveals, “but it was true. I didn’t want to drop out of the class, so I enrolled in the English as a Second Language (ESL) class.”
By attending our ESL classes, taught in collabo-ration with College of DuPage, Sonia was able to participate more readily in computer class, and she continued to progress through both programs. Sonia passed Level 5 in ESL, which is the highest level available at Loaves & Fishes, as well as Windows Fundamentals, Excel I and II, and PowerPoint. She is currently enrolled in
Word, and, more importantly, she has set new goals for herself that will help her build a better future for her family.
“I took Level 6 in ESL this summer at COD and will take Level 8 this fall,” Sonia outlines. “If I pass those courses and can pass separate reading and writing exams, I will enroll in the Certified Nursing Assistant program!” As Loaves & Fishes expands programmatic support for clients, it is stories like Sonia’s that illustrate how crucial our anti-poverty services are to low-income families in the community because they promote an optimistic outlook.

Brightening Kids’ Smiles“Milk means a lot to my kids,” confirms Hilda, a Loaves & Fishes client and mother of 4. “It is something that our family really enjoys.”
Loaves & Fishes’ Nutrition Advisory Council (NAC) has been invaluable in guiding us toward better health and wellness for client families. Coupled with motivators like recipes, product sampling, and nutrition classes, we aspire to meet the challenges of food insecurity with real answers for a healthy tomorrow.
In late 2012, an intern from Benedictine Universi-ty performed a nutritional assessment at Loaves & Fishes, and we learned that a family of four with two school age children would be able to meet most of their nutritional requirements for a week; however, a few nutrients, like calcium and Vitamin D, still fell short for these families.
According to NAC member Toni Havala, M.S., R.D., L.D.N., “Low fat dairy alternatives are the primary sources of calcium and Vitamin D in the American child’s diet. They also provide a valuable source of protein. Without these foods, it puts a child at risk for deficiencies and the as-sociated health risks.”
Thanks to funds raised through the Power of Community Campaign, Loaves & Fishes was able to address this deficiency by purchasing
approximately 300 gallons of milk every week. For families like Hilda’s, this addition was crucial to creating well-balanced meals.

Imparting Healthful Peace of Mind“I believe from the bottom of my heart that all individuals are entitled to affordable, accessible and quality healthcare,” explains Margie Tarpey, who led efforts at Loaves & Fishes to assist clients with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) application process.
“Before, our clients, some with chronic conditions, couldn’t get healthcare. Some told me they had to cut their pills in half to make them last because they hadn’t seen a doctor in years. When finishing an application, seeing the anxiety disappear off clients’ faces when they realized they would be receiving healthcare for their families, I found that was the most gratifying.”
In September, Loaves & Fishes partnered with the DuPage County Health Department as part of the Enroll DuPage grant project to assure the enrollment and retention of all residents who were newly eligible for healthcare coverage on January 1, 2014. As one of the largest social ser-vice providers in DuPage County, Loaves & Fishes was an ideal site for ACA enrollment; however, the project required dedicated volunteers to spend extended hours training to become Naviga-tors, educating clients (and themselves) about the Marketplace and enrolling families in the program.
“The training was challenging,” remarks Renee Barron, “but highly rewarding because once I started assisting our clients, it was plain to see their relief and peace now that they’d taken care of themselves. Their burden is lighter; they are able to focus on lifting themselves out of poverty because the emotional and spiritual poverty that once dominated their lives because of chronic illness has been lessened.”
Thanks to Loaves & Fishes volunteers, 469 client families received ACA application assistance; yet, the memories our volunteers created by work-ing alongside our clients speak louder than the statistics. “Part of the process is to select security questions. Most of them focus on childhood – best friend, favorite toy, favorite family vacation spot,” explains Kate Hopkins. “A young man who wanted to sign up for health insurance looked at these questions and said, ‘I don’t have any of those.’ In fact, he hadn’t had much of a childhood at all.
“The mom in me wanted to hug him, but instead I said, ‘the answers don’t have to be real, you just have to remember them,’” Kate describes. “He asked if I knew how to spell Keanu. I didn’t, but we looked it up and that’s how Keanu Reeves became his ‘best friend’ growing up. I helped him apply for health coverage, and he helped me see how much someone can overcome and still make it.”

OperationsMoving Mountains for Hunger “The new truck is a big help,” ex-plains Joe Honn, Loaves & Fishes volunteer. “We can fit six pallets on that truck, which is a lot of food, compared to the old truck where we could fit about four pallets.”
Thanks to a grant from United Parcel Service (UPS) and additional support from donors who contributed to the Truck Club special appeal, a new refrigerated truck is now part of Loaves & Fishes’ food recovery vehicles, and the results have been astounding. In FY 2014, Loaves & Fishes recovered 2,808,400 pounds of food from local grocers, which was a 44% increase over the previous year. Based on this poundage, we estimate that we have rescued $7,975,856 of food from being wasted.
Our refrigerated truck has helped Loaves & Fishes route our food recovery program. Previously, volunteers would drive to one grocery location then drive back to our facility to drop-off items to maintain the temperature of products, and then drive to the next grocery location. Now, volun-teers are able to be more fuel-efficient and visit multiple grocery partners on one trip.
Moreover, this addition has positively impacted Loaves & Fishes’ ability to source more healthy
foods for clients, such as produce, meat and dairy products. This past year, we purchased less meat because we had received an abundant variety from our grocery partners, which allowed Loaves & Fishes to redirect funding toward other essential purchases, such as milk and eggs for low-income families with children.

Its been quite some time since we last spoke, and much has changed. I would like to thank you for all the advice and time you dedicated to help me with my resume last year. All your effort helped me find a job. I am currently working for US Bank full-time. I will always be very thankful and hope you inspire others as you inspired me. Thank you very much.
I am so grateful
to God for
Loaves & Fishes. I w

God bless you
richly.
I had the opportunity to meet with a volunteer in order to complete my income tax returns. Upon entring your offices I was greeted and treated with respect. Not only was the volunteer knowledgeable and proficient, but so pleasant throughout. In fact he noted a tax refund amount that was overlooked by the costly professional I engaged last year! With all said, Thank you for the exceptional work you do at Loaves & Fishes.
To all the volunteers,My family and I want to THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the time and energy you spend helping those in need. After 24 years of marriage and never needing assistance, our circumstances drastically changed. So you don’t know how much we appreciate this Loaves & Fishes. We thank God for you and for all the others who have helped us. We look forward to the time when we will be able to pay it forward and once again help others. Its been a humbling experience being on the other side.We want to say a special thanks to all who have stood outside freezing this winter to help us!
I’m so happy that I can come
here to take English as a Second
Language classes because it’s
so difficult for me to learn by
myself with the books from
the library. And I need to learn
quickly because I need a job. I
want to study so much in these
classes and do my homework
and practice in my house. So
thank you for giving me the
opportunity to come to this
class.
I wish to express my gratitude for coming to my aid at a critical time in our lives. I am the 66 year old pastor who is making a transition to retirement but has struggled with medical issues since we arrived in August. I have been in the hospital six times since that date in August and my wife has had surgery for breast cancer. We have been living off of our emergency fund but obviously came to the point that we needed to be frugal and careful with our limited funds. Being mininstered to by Loaves & Fishes has been a great help and I personally thank you. It has been humbling days but has been rich in blessing from God. Elijah was cared for by the ravens at the Brook Cherith and by a widow in Zeraphath. God’s greatest prophets have often had to deal with impoverished circumstances. I am trying to learn all I can since this happens to be my season. Please accept my gratitude for being God’s provider at this time. John helped me prepare my resume
from an old one that needed work. He motivated me by helping me know what to say at interviews. He also helped increase my confidence. With the help of John and Loaves & Fishes I found a job and am currently employed. This program is exceptional and I hope it helps others as it did for me.

l. I found a job 2 weeks after my Job Search Support appointment. I re-did my resume and cover letter through this appointment, and this seemed to help.
In the money management class I learned to manage and budget money. I’ve learned the difference between consolitations, interest rates, bankruptcies and payday loavs. I now know how to handle all my debt and can make better decisions when it comes to my finances. I am really grateful because my family and I can live a much better life with all the information I have from my classes. I have been uninsured for 15 years plus. These
wonderful people at Loaves & Fishes have been a God send to me. Very helpful, very pleasant, in general, wonderful. They helped me get enrooled for Medicaid and Illinois Health Connect. I am not good on computers and I just did not understand the process I needed to go through. They were very thorough, kind and patient with me. I can’t commend them enough.
Loaves & Fishes has been extremely helpful to me and my family. I come here for food every 2 weeks, with no income that is a blessing. I had assistance with SNAP. I also had job search training with excellent teaching and training and resume assistance.
I’m so happy that I can come here to take English as a Second Language classes because it’s so difficult for me to learn by myself with the books from the library. And I need to learn quickly because I need a job. I want to study so much in these classes and do my homework and practice in my house. So thank you for giving me the opportunity to come to this class.
I’m on a fixed income and I’m disabled. Loaves & Fishes helps me make it through with food, vegetables and other services throughout the month.

I want to thank you for helping our family at a time when we needed it most. My husband lost his job after the first of the year, and we had no idea how we would feed our family. It was so hard to come the first time because we always feel there is someone out there who needs help more than we do, but with four small children ages seven to 2 months, we needed help. Your generosity and kind volunteers made such an impact on us. My husband had to bring our son on one trip, and the volunteers gave him a book that he just adores. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for helping us. He has since found a job, and somehow, some way, we will give back. One never thinks they will ever be in a situation where they are scared of how they are going to feed their family especially in a town like Naperville. Thank you to all the kind and caring and supportive volunteers who treated us so well on our two visits. We will never forget it and it helped us so much! With deep gratitude.
You are such a blessing to my family! I truly
appreciate all that you do to provide food and
other necessities to families like mine. Thank you
for the fresh fruit, veggies, kids snacks, etc. We
are so grateful.
Thank you

Transformation has been a common theme for Loaves & Fishes
throughout our history. The growing need in the western suburbs has
driven our programmatic evolution, and thanks to the responsiveness of
our supporters, we are able to offer the highest quality service
to benefit our community.
As we celebrate 30 years of hope and set goals for the future,
we reflect back to see what we have accomplished so far and
