LOAVES AND FISHES NEWS F ORMER CLIENT GIVES BACK I recently volunteered with Loaves and Fishes in Pittsburg with my current employer during the Corporate Week of Caring. I have a personal reason for volunteering with Loaves and Fishes, it is because when I relocated from Texas to California in 1986 and was living with a friend while looking for a job, after about a month my friend moved away, and I was left tem- porarily homeless. I did not know anyone having just moved to California but Id heard that Loaves and Fishes served meals to those with a need and I definitely had one. On day 1 of my homelessness and my first day eating in the Loaves and Fishes dining room, I met a woman who let me sleep on her couch while I looked for a job. She had five small children and would never let me contribute to her finances, she just wanted me to get on my feet. Thankfully, I found a temporary, part-time position at a very large bank, and shortly afterwards that position turned into a permanent full-time position that lasted for 10 years. During my first few weeks of working part time I had very little money to save for an apartment and continued to eat lunch at the Loaves and Fishes dining room every day for about 30 days. During that time you could not take food out of the dining room but there was a lady that worked there that would always wrap up a small amount of food and give it to me in a brown paper bag as I left the dining room and this would be my dinner. I later got a job at an oil company where I have now worked for 22 years. I always think back on my month using Loaves and Fishes dining room services and am tru- ly thankful Loaves and Fishes was available to help me during the time I needed it! Loaves and Fishes did not just provide me with a meal, but it allowed me to meet many people in different walks of life who offered me lifetime memories and sound advice that carry with me to this day. Working full time I never had the chance to go back and thank the nice lady that would see to it that I had dinner, though I did try one week when I had a vacation but she was no longer there, neither were the nice people that I had met during my month long jour- ney but hopefully my volunteering is a small way of saying, thank you to Loaves and Fishes for helping me get through a difficult time in my life.Forever Thankful, O.H. GIVES BACK

I recently volunteered with Loaves and Fishes in Pittsburg with my current employer during the Corporate Week of Caring. I have a personal reason for volunteering with Loaves and Fishes, it is because when I relocated from Texas to California in 1986 and was living with a friend while looking for a job, after about a month my friend moved away, and I was left tem-porarily homeless. I did not know anyone having just moved to California but I’d heard that Loaves and Fishes served meals to those with a need and I definitely had one. I always think back on my month using Loaves and Fishes dining room services and am tru-ly thankful Loaves and Fishes was available to help me during the time I needed it! Loaves and Fishes did not just provide me with a meal, but it allowed me to meet many people in different walks of life who offered me lifetime memories and sound advice that carry with me to this day. Working full time I never had the chance to go back and thank the nice lady that would see to it that I had dinner, though I did try one week when I had a vacation but she was no longer there, neither were the nice people that I had met during my month long jour-ney but hopefully my volunteering is a small way of saying, “thank you to Loaves and Fishes for helping me get through a difficult time in my life.” Forever Thankful, O.H.

Kelly is the parent of an adult child with Asperger’s Syndrome, who she has raised alone. This has afforded her with the op-portunity to meet, engage and learn from a very broad spectrum of people. It has also blessed her with patience she never dreamed she could have. The past almost 25 years have been an amazing rollercoaster ride of extremely high, highs and desperately low, lows. She began this journey as an employee of USDA, from where she thought she’d retire. After working with the USDA for five years, Kelly had a baby who arrived 13 weeks early and changed her life drastically. Her newborn (Pooh) spent 7 months in the hospital and then her husband left. Now it was just the two of them; Pooh and Kelly. No job. No prospects. Unwilling to leave her sickly little baby with sitters, she had to get on assistance. Even though this is not as she planned, it did enable her to spend time with her son — something she wouldn’t trade for anything. Pooh wasn’t expected to mature past childhood, yet here he is at 24 years old.

Kelly is a singer who cooks! These are two of her greatest passions. Doing these two things lets Kelly touch people, spirit-ually and physically, making them happy and hopefully warming their hearts. Feeding people provides instant gratification for her!

Kelly came to Loaves and Fishes Culinary Training Program after seeing the flyer twice at a county office building but only stopping to take one after she heard a voice in her head telling her to, “go back; go back and look at the fishes.” She turned around and took a flyer home. She was amazed that the class was FREE. She has been wanting to attend culinary school for years and had even applied to Le Cordon Bleu, but cost was always the deciding factor. Kelly feels like her childhood fantasy of opening a restaurant is finally attainable.

Kelly is very thankful to Loaves and Fishes. If it wasn’t for Loaves and Fishes, she believes she wouldn’t have taken the leap of faith to follow her dream. She’s excited to serve others through her passion of feeding people. She believes that just because she’s over 50 it doesn’t mean her life is coming to an end…she believes in new beginnings.

THE BIG LA BOCCE WAS A BIG SUCCESS!On September 22, more than 150 supporters joined us for our annual, The Big La Bocce, ben-efiting Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa and St. Vincent de Paul of Contra Costa County. The 15 courts at Martinez Bocce Federation were full! Together we raised more than $33,500 (gross, a 76% net increase over last year) to help those in need.

The event was a tremendous success because of the hard work by our board of directors, auction chair volunteer, Lisa Allan, auction donors, event volunteers and the wonderful staff at both organizations. A special thank you to our event sponsors for their support.

FRIEND

Thurston Brice October 21, 1945 – October 19, 2018

Thurston passed away after a year battle with AML (acute myeloid leukemia). He spent 15 years with Loaves and Fishes, first as a volunteer, then dining room manager and later as the operations manger overseeing all the

dining rooms.

Thurston celebrated 43 years of marriage with his beauti-ful wife, Florrie, and has two children, Arlene and Ricky

and a grandson, Salvadore. We will miss Thurston’s cheerful spirit and joyful smile.

Jane Silva, 95 years old, passed away in October 2018. She served as the volunteer coordinator for

the St. Catherine's church/school volunteer team in Martinez, and had been a

faithful longtime volunteer with Loaves and Fishes in

Martinez for 26 years. We appreciate and honor her dedication to our mission.

Page 4: LOAVES AND FISHES NE WS...Loaves and Fishes served meals to those with a need and I definitely had one. On day 1 of my homelessness and my first day eating in the Loaves and Fishes

The holiday season is here! It’s time to enjoy our families and friends, have a little holiday cheer and be thankful for who we are, what we have, our family,

our friends, our work, our health and our community. Loaves and Fishes is truly “Nourishing Lives” through our food and culinary programs. This holi-

day season I ask you to consider giving a charitable donation to help us serve our community. We continue to serve 600-700 meals a day and teach valu-

able culinary skills to individuals seeking employment and wanting to work in the culinary industry. We cannot do this without our community’s support.

“What would Contra Costa County look like without Loaves and Fishes in the community? Would more people be hungry, looking for food on the streets, eating at fast food restaurants because it’s cheap, or have no food at all?” There is no reason for anyone to be hungry. Loaves and Fishes is here to help and we are truly making a difference. I often hear from our clients, “Thank you, I love this place. It helps me eat a healthy meal!”

Ways You Can Help

Make a one time donation or better yet… a recurring gift that you don’t need to think about again

We appreciate every donation and volunteer. Loaves and Fishes has made a large impact in the county over the years. Thank you to everyone who is already a generous donor or volunteer who provides support to our community.
