Dear ResidentsWelcome to the November 2014 issue of LO Neighbors and a very Happy Thanksgiving. Autumn in Lake Oswego brings the surprise of sunny days and crisp evenings. Forests and parks will become a festival of color, and there’s no end of ways to enjoy the season.

This month I want you to meet Syd and Sherry Dorn. You may not know them, personally, but odds are you have experienced some of their work in the community. For 30 years they have been working behind the scenes in the community.

This magazine belongs to the people of Lake Oswego. If there is anything you would like to share, please share it with us! The one amazing thing which keeps Lake Oswego, “The Best Place to Live in the World”, is the individual people and families who live here. Each of your stories are our stories so please share them.

Cordially,

fitness at the Providence Health and Fitness Center for the past 20 years.

The Dorns have traveled extensively throughout the US, including Hawaii, Canada and Europe. Including the children on their travels, whenever possible, was a priority. Favorite family trips are, yearly, to Sun River and to the Oregon Coast …always a family affair. “Our children and grandchildren bring us great joy and are what make us smile each day!”

Both are active in the community and in their home church, South Lake, where they have volunteered to help in the “Roosevelt High School Project” and other activities. South Lake Church has partnered with Roosevelt High School and the St. John’s community to assist and serve the community by providing support and resources for the school. This support saved the school from shutdown and has turned it into a model school for the area.

Syd serves as a board member on the LO Chamber of Commerce and is an active member of Lake Oswego Rotary. Sherry served on the neighborhood association board for many years and still attends meetings whenever she can.

“We love the warmth and friendliness of our Lake Oswego friends and neighbors. Also, all the wonderful parks, art, theatre, shopping, awesome restaurants and numerous activities that LO offers. I could go on…Oh yes…lets not forget the lake, the beauty of it still takes my breath away… every time!”

Syd and Sherry are true LO Neighbors. They are here to make the community better and to be better friends and neighbors to everyone.

For the past 30 years, our neighbors, Syd and Sherry Dorn, have made Lake Oswego their home. They simply love living here. In fact, when Sherry heard that we were going to do a magazine for this area, she said, “You need to call it “LO Neighbors” and include the whole village in the magazine! Lake Oswego has such wonderful people who live here. Syd and I can think of no other place we would rather be!”

Syd was a junior at University of Oregon and Sherry was a freshman when they first met. Sherry was on a first date with Syd’s roommate, when she was introduced to Syd and his parents, who were there for “Parents Weekend”. His parents found her delightful and told Syd, “Marry that girl and we won’t disinherit you”. They were kidding of course, but Syd was wise enough to tease Sherry about it and she finally said “yes” to a date. The rest is history and they were happily married two years later, Sherry in her ti-ara and gown and Syd in his Air Force Officers uniform.

As a new second lieutenant they were sent to live north of London in Finchingfield, for the next 3 1/2 years. It was an exciting time for two young people to experience the era of the Stones and the Beatles in full force, and still behave as an officer and gentlemen with his wife. It was also an opportunity of a lifetime, to travel in Europe, eat fish-n-chips wrapped in newsprint, shop for antiques and make life-long friends.

Sherry loved the history of England, the old churches and castles. She began to do Brass Rubbings, which is an art form derived from rubbing charcoal crayons onto paper, that is placed over a brass effigy of Knights, Lords and Ladies, dating from the 13th and 16th centuries. She sold many of these rubbings at William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia; some as tall as 6 feet.

They lived in a thatch roof cottage that was 500 years old and Sherry said “tourists would knock on our door and ask for permission to take pictures.” Pretty remarkable! Syd said “England was so rich in history and the countryside so beautiful, that it will forever hold a place in our hearts”!

Syd reached the rank of Captain in the Air Force, and then left to pursue his true passion - the automobile business. First as a Factory Sales Executive for Chevrolet, Peugeot, and Volkswagen, and then as the owner of “Syd Dorn Chevrolet” in Portland. Now in his 12th year as owner of Vehicle Buyer’s Service, Syd Dorn, Auto Broker is Your ‘Personal’ Car Shopper for all vehicles, new or used, throughout the United States (including Hawaii) and parts of Canada.

Sherry engaged in a career as a model and fashion expert. For years she was a spokesperson and fashion expert for “AM Northwest” on KATU and also with “Good Day Oregon” at Channel 12. She is also a coordinator and commentator of fashion events and is sought after as a personal shopper. She has authored the book, “Sassy Shopper” which is a resource guide for women who “love to shop and especially for those who don’t!” As a fashion model, she walked many a runway for designers and stores such as Nordstrom and has appeared in print ads for numerous clients on both coasts.

She enjoyed being a model because it “allowed me to be able to choose which jobs to do and be able to work part-time. This was important because I wanted to be, first and foremost, a mother.”

Residents for 30 years, Syd and Sherry built their home in the Westridge Neighborhood in 1984. Their children, Jason and Shana, grew up attending Westridge Elementary, Waluga Junior High, and both Lake Oswego High and Lakeridge High School. Both children enjoyed sports programs and volunteering at numerous charities and school functions. Shana even lettered for four years in Girls Fast Pitch Softball. This was not an easy feat for anyone! Now Shana works with Special Education kids and spends time with her husband Jake and their four children, Sydney 14, Mathew 12, Nicholas 10 and Whitney age 9, in Kelso, Washington. Jason is the owner of JB Event Productions and lives in West Hartford, Connecticut with his spouse, Brian, who is the Regional Fleet Manager at Pratt & Whitney. They also have a delightful 9-year-old “Shih-Ka-Peke,” Harlee, who thinks she is more of a human than a dog.

Syd and Sherry love to ride bikes on the many adventurous trails in the area. Their favorite is the “Spring Water Trail” which starts at the Sellwood Bridge and hugs the Willamette River into the Pearl District, where they have lunch in the Pearl before their trek back home. They love this trail because it showcases “the natural beauty of Oregon, with the birds, the wetlands and life on the water.”

They both love to keep active. Syd has been a member of the Lake Oswego Trainers Club for many years and Sherry has maintained her

IYou let mechanics fix your car. You let electricians fix your lighting. You let your travel agent book your tickets. So, why not let interior designers make your home functional and comfortable, tailored to you?

It is no mystery that your stress level is amplified when you and your family finally make the decision to build or remodel your home. Aside from the cost, there are endless surface, hardware and furniture selections that need to be made in a timely manner. What makes the whole process even more nerve-racking is the pressure of making the right decision. A wrong decision in the design process can be costly, time consuming, can lead to another project, or can be something you regret for years to come.

Recently, a young family of four called upon interior design experts, Garrison Hullinger Interior Design (GHID), after they had already started framing their home for a new build. The family enlisted GHID for their expertise in helping bring ideas into a cohesive and functional reality. Together, GHID and the family worked hand-in-hand finalizing surfaces, materials, color schemes, and furniture selections. They landed on a monochromatic color palette, natural hard surfaces, and rustic furniture pieces, which worked together to give the home a comfortable feel and timeless look.

Imagine ten, fifteen, or even 20 years from now. You are just coming down off the excitement of your pre-retirement party. Your co-workers, friends, and family have left. The helium balloons are hovering half-way between the floor and ceiling, while confetti and silly string create a nightmare for the cleaning crew.

Then it hits you. In a few short months, you will be on a fixed retirement income. Yet, you still have ten or fifteen years left on your 30-year mortgage. Years ago when you obtained this mortgage, you had a hazy goal of having no mortgage when you retired.

Now, you’re scrambling with your financial planner to determine how long your retirement “nest egg” will last since you must withdraw more each month than originally planned due to the still-existing mortgage payment.

How does this happen? Simple. Your mortgage and your mortgage repayment plan wasn’t a key part of your retirement planning.

SO THE qUESTIONS YOU NOW HAVE ARE:

• Should I refinance my mortgage to a shorter term that matches my retirement age goal?

• Do I figure out how much extra to pay each month to ensure my current mortgage is paid off in time for retirement?

• Is using my extra cash flow to pay down my mortgage the best financial decision in the long-run?

We focus on estate planning and administration, taxation, business, elder and personal injury law and litigation

Your Mortgage and

• Should I ramp up my investing and savings to then be able to pay off the mortgage all at once when I retire?

• What about some of my other debts like the auto loan, or student loans, or that credit card balance for last year’s vacation?

• How does this mortgage repayment impact the rest of my financial goals, such as saving for college and retirement?

These questions all center on Liability Management. Years ago I came to the realization that while financial planners around the country were focused on managing assets for their clients, nobody was truly helping people manage the other side of the balance sheet...the liabilities.

The truth is, how we manage our monthly cash flow, and a lifetime of borrowing and repayment of debts, plays a critical role in your ability to retire when you want and how you want. Through better management and planning on the mortgage and liability side, you can be debt free sooner and increase your net worth faster and easier. To fill this void, I created The RepaySMART ReviewTM, an exclusive planning process at my company to help homeowners.

10th Anniversary of Rotary SoundsBy Art Scevola

October 1st 2014, Lake Oswego’s Kruseway Rotary celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Rotary Sounds Concert at Lakewood Center for the Arts. Originated in 2004 as a benefit for Thailand’s tsunami relief, proceeds from past concerts have helped with projects ranging from Hurricane Katrina refugee relief to financial aid for local military families To date, the total dollars raised are more than $100,000. Beginning in 2013, the club has dedicated the net results to provide funding for the annual Christmas party for cancer stricken children and their families under the care and support of the Candle lighters organization. This year the theme was “Kids helping Kids” which also included local high school scholarships and support for hungry children in Uganda.

The entire concert consisted of Individual performances by amazingly talented singers and one incredible 15 year-old virtuoso violinist. The show began with a tribute to the Beatles, with 9 individual selections performed by the young singers from the Lakewood Rising Artist Workshop as led by LO’s Andrew Paul Woodworth, backed up by his band. The audience was on their feet and clapping for the finale, “Hey Jude”, which included all the singers on stage and the band at its best.

Following a brief break to roll out the piano, Kruseway Rotarian, Ed Popkin, drew 3 names for gifts of Oregon wines. Following that, we were mesmerized by two marvelous protégés of Michael Allen Harrison performing two numbers with voice and piano skills beyond their years. No doubt, lots of tears welled up when the sisters brought down the house with their duet rendition of Martina McBrides, “Do it Anyway”.

Last and certainly not least, concert violinist Aaron Meyer provided us with the 15 year-old virtuoso violinist, Kiarra, who performed a flawless “Carmen Fantasie” by Franz Waxman She and Aaron closed out the evening with their own violin duet performed over a recorded track of the well known “Kashmir”. Both Aaron and Michael will be including their students at their respective Holiday Concerts in Portland this December. I for one can’t wait to hear these talented musicians again.

This was truly a magical evening for the sold out crowd, the musicians, and for Rotarians who came out to support kids and who left with their hearts filled with music and gladness for a chance to help bring some joy into the lives of others.

Oswego heritage council

Facts and recollections: These are the very things history is made of. A fact, important in recording history, is a fact. Recollections are memory and they shimmer in our minds. Recollections can make us smile or cry, fret or sigh with contentment.

Imagine a collection of facts and recollections: Voila! - the Board of Directors of the Oswego Heritage Council. While we are all aligned in our dedication and focus to preserve our community’s history, the individual recollections we bring to the Board, along with the facts that we have collected throughout our lives, are an invaluable collection.

Many of us on OHC’s Board grew up here. Allow me to speak for myself, please. My family moved to Oswego (not yet called Lake Oswego) in 1951. My uncle grew up on the farm that is now Oswego Hills Winery. Perhaps that is one of the reasons we moved to Oswego…we already had history here. We lived down the street from Trista and across the street from Kent and Kay. Forest Hills school gymnasium was not attached to the classroom building like it is now. We had to go outside to get into the gym. This fact sticks in my recollection.

If I recollect correctly, Country Club Road was not yet paved when we moved into Oswego, I recall my brother’s Boy Scout Troop #12 planted those trees you see along side the golf course. I think I have my facts right but perhaps my history recollection has faded.

In the 1950s and 1960s Oswego was a bit different than it is now. I always thank our founding fathers for their vision in making A Avenue Oswego’s main street. At the top of A Avenue stands the Oswego Heritage House, once home to Paul Murphy’s business and Dr. Cane’s medical office and residence. The businesses along our main street in the 1950s and 1960s have changed. Back then I remember a hardware store, a wonderful children’s store, JC Penney’s, City Hall, Oswego Food Center, and others. Today, well, you know, which businesses are on A Avenue.

Just for fun, let me share another recollection. Halloween in Oswego in the 1960s was always fun. Groups of friends used to walk from their homes and meet in downtown Oswego after dark. In addition to leaving rolls of TP carefully placed along the street, we would write silly sayings on the windows of the businesses on A Avenue. Nothing nasty, just silly. Then, of course, we would cover each other with shaving cream all the while screaming and laughing. The fact is that those businesses would wash their windows in the morning and go on about their business. As I said, Oswego was different back then.

As a kid growing up in Lake Oswego, I took for granted the great community I lived in. In elementary school I had great teachers and learning opportunities, and no shortage of enrichment activities: choir, strings, field trips, and PE. In junior high and high school, the academic expectations grew along with the options for extracurricular clubs and sports. My free time was spent exploring Iron Mountain, riding bikes around town, and hanging out at Lake Grove Swim Park in the summers. It was a good life.

A couple of decades, a few different cities, and a family of my own later, there was little doubt about where to settle down. So we ended up back in the neighborhood where I grew up, and the life is definitely still good here. My daughters thrive in our schools, and we’re surrounded by remarkable people and a wonderful community.

Some things are different though. After our older daughter started in grade school, I heard about the Lake Oswego Schools Foundation and wanted to know more. I learned that the old way of funding public schools in Oregon had been turned upside down. Instead of the bulk of funding coming from local property taxes, the vast majority now comes from the state general fund, and is distributed, essentially, evenly throughout the state, on a per-student basis. A local property tax option is allowed, but it has a cap still leaving a gap in funding. Great schools and a great community don’t just happen; it takes investment. I learned that if we want to keep our schools at the top, we must supplement the state funding with local investment, through the local option and the Foundation.

My wife and I realized that supporting the Foundation was a no brainer. We figured that for the cost of one or two pre-school tuition payments, we can help put an additional 20 teachers in our district. We also knew the Foundation needed more than just donations. It needed volunteers to help it succeed.

We continue to support the Foundation because there’s a tangible benefit: more teachers in our public schools. That means smaller class ratios than we would otherwise have, and it means more elective and academic offerings at the middle school and high school level. We love being a part of this community, and we love the education our daughters are receiving. If we can help keep it that way, we know it’s the best educational investment we’ll ever make.

LLife threatening emergencies that affect you and your family in Lake Oswego are pretty rare. We don’t have issues with tornados, hurricanes or draught like so many areas of the country. What we do have, however, are potentially disastrous events that occur once in a decade, once in a century and even once every 300 years. These events include ice storms, flooding and the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake, in that order.

The key to keeping your family safe is to develop an Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP). The EPP would detail, among other things, emergency shelter, food, water, communications, power, fuel, security and much more. It should focus on the event that you are most concerned about. For example, if a magnitude 8 or 9 earthquake hits Lake Oswego, the entire Portland Metro region will be affected. Little or no professional emergency responders will be coming to your aid. Local police, fire and other emergency responders must focus on the major infrastructures and other critical issues. There’s a high probability that roads and bridges will be impassable, electrical power will be out and grocery stores will run out of food.

Planning for Emergencies and Being PreparedBy Rick Eilers

How will your family fare for those

first 30 days?Developing a plan will give you the opportunity to review how prepared you are, what emergency food supplies you have, which first aid kits need replenishing, what training you need to get and more. The

Lake Oswego Fire Department offers two free CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) classes each year, one in the spring and one in the fall.

Consider your emergency preparedness plan to be as valuable as car, home and life insurance. It’s another piece of insurance to protect your family should something unforeseen occur.

resident featuresGet to know your neighbors and community one resident at a time. We enjoy featuring residents from all walks of life and highlighting community events close to you. Make the magazine your own by submitting your own nominations of families, individuals, groups, clubs and other organizations that you’d like to see highlighted. Or use this feature as a way to share your own funny anecdotes, experiences or hobbies. See page 6 for one example of a family feature.

share Your snapshotsHave some incredible photos from your latest vacation? Have you captured a winter scene or touching moment that begs to be shared? We’ll publish your photos – and may even pick yours for a cover shot!
