For 20 years the LL.M. International Business Law has offered a unique and valuable experience to law gradu-ates from around the world wishing to pursue an executive LL.M. program. With almost 200 years of experience the Faculty of Law of the University of Zurich is known worldwide for the excellence of its faculty and its legal education programs. The school’s location, Zurich, is the economic capital and most vibrant city of Switzerland and is situated in the heart of Europe which allows students to easily discover other European countries and enjoy Switzerland’s spectacular environment.

The ongoing demand and positive feedback from program graduates reflect the attractiveness and practical ap-plicability of this graduate program. The next course will run from 2017 to 2018. As in the past, the course will entail a highly challenging, practice-related work study program. An international team of lecturers ensures that course subject matter is not limited to national issues, but encompasses a growing volume of international busi-ness law. Academic modules conducted in the USA, as well as in China and Geneva, contribute to the interna- tional nature of the program.

Among the advantages that graduate students find at the University of Zurich are the opportunity to pur-sue a broad course of study, and the possibility to explore their areas of interest in the Specialization Courses. 20 years LL.M. program

Program Overview

“Challenging, practice-oriented, and international!”Prof. Dr. Andreas KellerhalsDirector LL.M. International Business Law

The LL.M. program takes place over one year (8 months of lectures plus thesis) and is con-ducted on a full-time basis. The program includes a General Course (Modules 1–9) and one of the two Specialization Courses, comprising approximately 420 lectures. The program is completed with the submission of a thesis.

General CourseThe General Course builds the foundation for the sub-sequent Specialization Courses. The program starts with an introduction to Swiss law where the students get to know the most important institutions and regulations and acquire overview of Swiss business law. Module 2 familiarizes participants with legal vocabulary. The course also includes prac-tice-oriented work with legal texts and exercises based on practical, everyday situations, such as conducting negotiations or creating legal documents. In Module 3 the class is firstly given a general over-view of the sources and legal nature of international agreements in the field of international economics. Fur-ther, the laws governing the World Trade Organization (WTO) and its effect through the study of important cases will be discussed. Secondly students will gain an understanding of the legal system key international business partners. The law of the European Union affects not only its member states, but all nations with which they engage in trade. Against this background, Module 4 lays the foundation for the entire course. It serves as an intro-duction to European law and provides insight into the sources of law and institutions of the EU. Additio-nally, the lecturers will introduce basic elements of the competition law of the European community, such as state and private limitations on competition, market-dominant companies, mergers, regulatory group ex-emptions and effects on third states. Thanks to an increasingly globalized world and a greater mobility, private persons as well as enter-prises now conduct more legal business outside of their home countries. As a result, international pri-vate business laws have gained importance. Module 5 enables participants to stay abreast of these deve-lopments. The second part of Module 5 deals with corporate criminal law such as insider trading, corrup-

tion and money laundering. Although there is no general competence for the EU in the area of taxation, and the power to regulate taxes still lies within the competence of each member state, the EU has attempted to effect a harmonization of user and corporate tax. One of the reason for this is that in international matters questions of taxation play an im-portant role, especially in the area of corporate law.In module 7 participants are actively involved through practical exercises with negotiation strategies and tac-tical approaches in contract negotiation. Knowledge gained through this module should enable participants to optimize results in future negotiation situations.

After the successful completion of the General Course students can choose one of the following specializations:> International Banking, Finance and Insurance Law> International Sports Law

Option: Students who do not seek a specialized LL.M. Title receive the general title “LL.M. International Econo-mic and Business Law”.

LL.M. International Banking, Finance and Insurance LawThe Specialization Course in International Banking, Fi-nance and Insurance Law offers an advanced education in national and international financial markets. It con-sists of two modules:

> Module 1: Institutional framework for banking, investment services and insurance> Module 2: Market participants, products and marketing

Module 1 incorporates the Swiss, European and inter-national financial market framework for banking, invest-ment services and insurance. This module also focuses on international organizations and their regulations, the basis for regulation, and the characteristics of the most important financial markets.

Module 2 consists of an in-depth study of the regulation of market participants, financial services, and the marke-ting of financial products as well as the relevant treaties.

LL.M. International Sports LawThis Specialization Course is intended for professionals who wish to gain an in-depth knowledge of the legal and business aspects of international sports. The course comprises two modules:

> Module 1: Organization and Governance> Module 2: Dispute Resolution: General and Specific Areas

Module 1 provides an economic and legal insight into sports organizations. It analyzes how sport organiza-tions operate and integrate on a national and interna-tional level. Participants will also focus on topics such as sport events, sport contract law and the resolution of sports-related disputes and arbitration.

Module 2 addresses the question of how sporting organ- izations tackle the current challenges of doping, illegal betting, gaming manipulation and corruption, that are endangering the fundamental principles of sporting competition.

Two Areas of Specialization, Study Excursions

Study excursionsA unique and consistently successful part of our LL.M. program are our study excursions provided alongside the regular lectures. Beside a compulsory excursion to the WTO in Geneva, a study trip to the USA and China is offered. In addition, a study trip to Luxembourg/Brussels will be organized if there are enough applicants for the trip. The excursions aim to introduce students to the respective law areas and gain an in-depth insight into various legal systems by attending classes at partner universities. Furthermore, they get to see different law firms and internati-onal companies and, visit courts and parliament members.

Students who are interested in only taking the Specialization Course can be awarded a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS).

Switzerland, Zurich and the University

“The University of Zurich, in the center of Europe, is an ideal location for the successful study of international business law.”Prof. em. Dr. Roger Zäch President LL.M. International Business Law

LocationSwitzerland has a lot to offer in terms of cultural diversity, languages, stunning scenery and, of course, its people. There are approximately 8.1 million people living in Switzerland and the country has four official languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh.

Switzerland has enjoyed economic stability over the past decades. Despite Switzerland lack of natural resources and the fact that the Swiss economy is highly dependent on exports, its GDP per inhabitant is higher than in most other industrialized countries. The Swiss population on the whole enjoys a high standard of living and Switzer-land has a strong reputation for high-quality services in many sectors including health, industry, public trans-port, education, etc.

In the Global Competitiveness Report released by the World Economic Forum in 2015/2016 Switzerland tops the overall ranking. “Brainforce” is also highly valued in Switzerland and this is reflected by Switzerland‘s leading position on the “European Innovation Union Scoreboard 2016”.

Student lifeStudying in Zurich means living in Switzerland’s vibrant and exciting cultural capital. Far more than a busi-ness and finance center, Zurich is also known as the “little big city”. This is because Zurich offers all the benefits of city life and at the same time attractive recreation facilities on its doorstep with its stunningly beautiful lake and nearby mountains.

University of ZurichThe University of Zurich (UZH) with its 26,000 enrolled students is Switzerland’s largest university. Founded in the year 1833, UZH was Europe’s first university to

be established by a democratic political system; today, UZH is one of the foremost universities in the German-speaking world. Made up of seven faculties covering some 100 different subject areas, the University offers a wide variety of Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programs. In addition, UZH’s continuing education programs offer excellent learning opportunities.

Fully integrated into the life of the student body, graduate students can benefit from the University’s infrastructure and use the sports cen-ter, canteen, various libraries, etc. (CAS partici-pants are not enrolled at the University of Zurich).

The Europa Institute at the University of Zurich (EIZ)Additionally, participants in the LL.M. Pro-gram in International Business Law can take advantage of discounted parti- cipation fees for Europa Institute events (conferences and seminars).

AccommodationParticipants are required to organize their own acco-modation. Housing for students is offered by different institutions that are connected with the University, but operate independently (the tuition fee does not cover living costs).

Demand for housing is particular high. As such, it is im-portant to start looking for accommodation in advance and explore a variety of options.

The University of Zurich has an office for international students, which provides the necessary information and help: www.uzh.ch/studies/studentlife/accomodation_ en.html

Living costsLiving expenses depend very much on the individual student. The University can provide an approximate value for international students:www.uzh.ch/studies/studentlife/finances_en.html

Financial assistanceThe LL.M. program does not offer scholarships. In some justified circumstances, LL.M. candidates with superior academic credentials are eligible for the award of partial tuition waiver. Since funds for financial support are unfortunately very restricted and

requests are numerous, we urge you to first and fore-most contact your home institution or private donors for financial support.

If you nevertheless wish to apply for a tuition fee waiver, we request that you send us, in addition to your com-pleted application, a one-page letter explaining your need and proof of other attempts that you have under-taken to obtain a scholarship. Please also note that the smaller your scholarship request is, the higher the chance of obtaining one will be.

VisaDepending on your country of origin, international students may need a visa to study in Switzerland.

Prospective students should apply for a visa as soon as possible at the Swiss Embassy in their home country. Guidelines for students with a visa requirementwww.int.uzh.ch/in/master/details_en.htmlwww.bfm.admin.ch//content/bfm/en/home/themen/einreise.html
