about Berkeley law
Berkeley Law is one of the top 10 law schools in the
United States, committed to academic excellence,
social engagement, and intellectual diversity.
EDUCATION
Our highly distinguished faculty prepare students
for careers in a world of rapid change, complexity,
and opportunity that requires leaders with multi-
disciplinary training, global perspective, and
adaptable skills. Our curriculum provides a solid
legal foundation, and is enriched by courses in
emerging fields.
ENGAGEMENT
We use our intellectual capital to help solve real-
world problems and to create a more just society.
Our research centers and institutes are incubators
of legal thought and facilitators of informed,
effective action. Our journals expose students to
a rapidly expanding body of law and help them
improve their legal writing and research skills.
And our faculty members collaborate actively
with colleagues across the university and around
the world.
ENVIRONMENT
We are part of UC Berkeley, one of the finest
research universities in the world. And we are
located in the San Francisco Bay Area, known for
its leadership in science, technology, business,
culture, and the arts, plus its entrepreneurial spirit,
multiculturalism, and natural beauty.
At Berkeley Law,
LL.M. candidates
study U.S. law with
internationally renowned
faculty. They build long-
lasting relationships with
legal professionals from
around the globe. And
they live in one of the
world’s most culturally
and intellectually
stimulating regions.

One ll.M. degree — Two Tracks
Berkeley Law provides two paths to the same
LL.M. degree: the traditional track from August to
May and the professional track, which spans two
consecutive summer terms. LL.M. candidates in
both tracks take the same courses, from the same
expert faculty, as our J.D. students. The two tracks
are equal in length and require 21 units to complete.
LL.M. students can earn Certificates of
Specialization in one of several subjects:
8 Business Law (both tracks)
8 Law & Technology (both tracks)
8 Environmental Law (traditional track only)
8 Energy & Clean Technology (traditional track
only)
8 International Law (traditional track only)
TRADITIONAl TRACK
Students in our traditional track choose between
two options: coursework and thesis. In both
cases, the focus is on customization. Traditional
track LL.M. students who seek in-depth training
in a particular area of law can earn Certificates of
Specialization in Business Law, Law & Technology,
Environmental Law, Energy & Clean Technology,
and International Law. With some exceptions,
LL.M. students in this track may choose from any
course offered to J.D. students.
Coursework Option
Each student taking the coursework option develops
a unique curriculum that combines required and
elective classes. Students take required courses
in Fundamentals of U.S. Law and Legal Research
and Writing. They may then select courses within
a single field of study to focus on a particular area
of law, or draw from the full range of law school
offerings to gain a breadth of knowledge.
See the current course list at:
www.law.berkeley.edu/1321.htm
Thesis Option
The thesis option consists of a research project
culminating in a thesis. Working closely with a
faculty adviser, each student completes 13 units of
coursework and eight units of independent study.
This option is appropriate primarily for individuals
pursuing academic or research-focused careers.
PROFESSIONAl TRACK
The professional track enables students to obtain
the same Berkeley Law LL.M. degree over two
consecutive summers. Unique among top-tier law
schools, the professional track is ideal for people
who prefer not to leave their jobs or families for a
single nine-month stretch.
Coursework is more focused than in the traditional
track, and the two terms must be taken in sequence.
Completion of this program allows students to
meet all educational requirements to sit for the
California Bar Exam.
Students in the professional track learn from the
same world-renowned faculty who teach in the
J.D. program during the August-May school year.
LLM Bro7.indd 4-5 4/18/13 1:49 PM
Faculty
Students in both LL.M. tracks learn from the same
accomplished faculty who teach in the J.D. pro-
gram. Our faculty includes founders and directors
of our legal centers, teachers with decades of
experience, real-world practitioners, and interna-
tional experts.
Although our faculty is packed with ultra-high-
achievers, they’re famously approachable, and
accessible too. Most look for ways to engage with
students outside the classroom—whether by col-
laborating on research projects or simply chatting
during office hours.
Andrew T. Guzman, Jack A. Ralston
Professor of Law and Associate Dean,
International and Advanced Degree
Programs (Foreign Investment Law) is a mem-
ber of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration’s
Academic Council and is on the board of several
academic journals.

Gilbert Foundation Professor of Law
and Director, Berkeley Center for Law,
Business, and the Economy (M&A) is a leading
authority on corporate law and law & economics.

(Civil Procedure) is an award-winning
administrative law scholar.
Paul M. Schwartz, Professor of Law and
Co-Director, Berkeley Center for Law &
Technology (Privacy Law) is a leading
international expert on information privacy law.
Professional Track Coursework
Because the full range of J.D. courses are not
offered in the summer, the professional track com-
bines core coursework with a carefully selected
subset of the most popular and frequently utilized
courses.
Courses in this track are intensive, three to six
weeks in duration, and offered in sequence.
Twenty-one units are required for completion
of the LL.M. degree, which allows students to
meet the educational requirements to sit for the
California Bar Examination.

Berkeley law’s Top-ranked Programs
INTEllECTUAl PROPERTy
Berkeley Law is a pioneer in intellectual property,
one of law’s most exciting frontiers. Our program
has been ranked No. 1 for 15 of the last 16 years
by US News. We published the nation’s first IP
law journal. And we are located in the hub
of California’s knowledge-based economy.
Our courses expose students to all facets
of IP law, including stem-cell research,
gene therapies, computer software,
information technology, and the
creative arts. And our seminars
bring in scores of prominent
outside speakers every year.
BUSINESS lAw
Berkeley Law offers a superb
education in both established and
emerging fields of business law.
Internationally recognized experts such
as Eric Talley and Robert Bartlett teach
LL.M. students in both tracks, and the
Berkeley Center for Law, Business
and the Economy offers year-round
academic programming. Business
law as a specialty is not ranked by
US News, but Berkeley’s program is
internationally recognized both for the
depth of its faculty and the breadth of its
interdisciplinary scope.
ENVIRONMENTAl lAw
California leads the U.S. in environmental policy,
and Berkeley Law’s program, ranked third in
the nation, is at the forefront with the deepest
environmental law curriculum, accomplished
faculty, and the top environmental law journal.
Our Center for Law, Energy & the Environment
is a crossroads for some of the field’s most
influential scholars and policy leaders. And our
J.D. and LL.M. environmental law certificate
programs—among only a handful in the
nation—provide a solid career foundation in
this burgeoning field.
INTERNATIONAl lAw
As globalization blurs geopolitical
boundaries, it creates new and
challenging legal issues. Trade and other
business among the Americas, Europe,
and Asia are soaring, and so is the need
for attorneys who can work effectively
within multiple legal systems. Complex
transnational issues include climate
change, international war crimes, global
copyright protection, and deep-ocean
drilling. The extraordinary breadth of our
fifth-ranked program enables students
to focus on specific topics, such as
maritime law, or on individual regions,
such as the Pacific Rim.

and Marta Ligia Garcia.

Students in our traditional track are eligible for up to
one year of Optional Practical Training (OPT) after com-
pletion of their LL.M. degree. Our career programming
for these students includes U.S. and international job
searches.
Students in our professional track are not eligible for
Optional Practical Training (OPT) due to federal guide-
lines. The professional track is designed for working
attorneys who are focused on career opportunities in
their home countries. As such, our career programming
for these students focuses on professional development
and international job search.

Centers and institutes
One of Berkeley Law’s hallmarks is the extraordinary
degree to which faculty and students engage with
the world beyond the school. Much of this work is
conducted through our results-oriented research
centers, which are addressing complex issues that
cluster at the nexus of law and such diverse fields as
business, international affairs, social justice, technol-
ogy, race and diversity, health care, criminal justice,
energy, and the environment.
Berkeley Center for Law, Business and the Economy
is the hub of Berkeley Law’s cutting-edge research
and teaching on the impact of law on business and
on U.S. and global economies.
Berkeley Center for Law & Technology promotes
the understanding and guides the development of
intellectual property and related fields of law and
policy as they intersect with business, science, and
technology.
The Center for Law, Energy & the Environment is a
research center whose mission is to foster interdisci-
plinary environmental law and policy research and to
translate that research into pragmatic solutions.
Thelton E. Henderson Center for Social Justice pro-
duces and fosters creative scholarship that examines
the law through a lens of social justice, and works in
partnership with communities to provide education
to the general public.
The Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Law and
Social Policy produces research, policy prescriptions,
and curricular innovation on civil rights, education,
criminal justice, family and economic security, immi-
gration and healthcare issues facing California and
the nation.
The Human Rights Center promotes international
justice worldwide and trains the next generation of
human rights researchers and advocates.
The Center for the Study of Law and Society fosters
empirical research and theoretical analysis concern-
ing legal institutions, legal processes, legal change,
and the social consequences of law.
The Institute for Legal Research serves as a center for
interdisciplinary research, teaching, and public service.
In recent years, the institute has focused on the fields
of criminal justice, family law, constitutional law and
history, Japanese and comparative law, environmen-
tal law and policy, and ocean law and policy.
Kadish Center for Morality, Law & Public Affairs pro-
motes research and reflection on moral philosophical
issues in law and public life, with special concern for
the substantive aspects of criminal law.
Robert D. Burch Center for Tax Policy and Public
Finance, a collaboration between Berkeley Law and
the UC Berkeley Department of Economics, conducts
thoughtful, objective analysis of tax policy issues.
The Honorable G. William and Ariadna Miller
Institute for Global Challenges and the Law
addresses urgent challenges that demand creative,
global approaches, including promoting the rule of
law, advancing climate and energy justice, and recon-
ceptualizing armed conflict and the use of force.
The Berkeley Institute for Jewish Law and Israeli
Law, Economy and Society develops opportunities
for research, programming, visiting scholars, collo-
quia and classes to strengthen academic inquiry and
discourse related to Jewish and Israeli topics across
the Berkeley campus.

A new model for premier law schools is fast emerging, and Berkeley Law is a leading change agent. Today’s most effective and influential law schools are sources of intellectual capital embedded in research universities—places
where people collaborate across disciplinary lines and international boundaries to tackle the most dif-ficult and complex problems. All law schools have an opportunity to play a leadership role in this evolu-tion. But schools like ours, with a broad public mis-sion, have a singular responsibility to do so.
At Berkeley Law, we’re building professionals capa-ble of integrating law, business, politics, finance, the social sciences, and the humanities. We’re producing high-end lawyers who will have the skills to navigate uncharted territory. The students in our LL.M. programs fully participate in this vibrant, diverse intellectual community.
I came to Berkeley Law in 2004 after 23 years as a professor at Harvard—and stints serving two U.S. presidents. I’ve had the privilege of working with thousands of brilliant students, scholars, and profes-sionals over the years. But nowhere have I found a more electrifying intellectual environment than here.
— Christopher Edley, Jr. William H. Orrick, Jr. Distinguished Professor and Dean
When top students from over 50 countries unite with world-renowned faculty at a law school with a strong public mission, the potential for solving the world’s problems is limitless. That is Berkeley Law. As a Berkeley Law graduate (J.D., 2002), I can tell you that the opportu-nities to learn, be inspired, engage with faculty, and enjoy the vibrant Bay Area culture are abundant. But if you want to hear it from one of our LL.M. students or graduates, contact us and we will introduce you.
— Amelia Miazad Executive Director, Advanced Degree Programs
The san Francisco Bay area
One of the most vibrant and stimulating metro-
politan regions in the world, the San Francisco
Bay Area provides an endless source of personal,
professional, and cultural enrichment for students.
The options are infinite, whether your interests
run to politics or poetry, food or film, nature or
nightlife. Restaurants within one mile of campus
represent more than 30 cuisines from around
the world. Our music, dance, and film scenes are
every bit as international as our culinary land-
scape. And the spectacular recreational resources
of northern California—mountains, ocean, wine
country, and city—will engage and energize you
outside the classroom.
