The Government has introduced the new loan this year to provide a means for anyone over the age of 24 to be able to study and improve their qualifications and therefore improve job and life prospects. This means that adults will not have to pay the course fee upfront. There may still be some charges for registration with awarding bodies, exam fees and materials that will need to be paid.

Repayments for the loan will only start being paid once the adult is earning over £21,000 per year and the amount paid back each year is dependent on the wage earned over this amount and not how much the course costs.Loans are funded from the Student Loan Company and are not means tested or subject to credit checks. The loan is available irrespective of the learner’s current employment status. The application form is simple and can be done online.

Learners aged 24 and over will therefore have the option to either:

• pay the course fees themselves• have an employer/sponsor pay the course

fees for them• apply for an Advanced Learning Loan to

help pay for the course fees.

The loan amount you will need to borrow will be for the cost of delivering the course in line with government guidance related to each individual qualification. Therefore different qualifications at Level 3 may cost different amounts.

The 24+ Advanced Learning Loans are for anyone who:

• is aged 24 and above at the start of their course

• is studying at Level 3 - Level 5 in Further Education and training

• is on an advanced or higher apprenticeship• is resident in the UK• has not previously had a loan to do the

same type and level of qualification.
