Job 38:1. 8-11 From the heart of the tempest the Lord gave Job his answer. He said: Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous out of the womb, when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands; when I marked the bounds it was not to cross and made it fast with a bolted gate? Come thus far, I said, and no farther; here your proud waves shall break. Ps 106:23-26. 28-31 R. Give thanks to the Lord, his love is everlasting. Some sailed to the sea in ships to trade on the mighty waters. These men have seen the Lord's deeds, the wonders he does in the deep. R. For he spoke; he summoned the gale, tossing the waves of the sea up to heaven and back into the deep; their soul melted away in their distress. R. Then they cried to the Lord in their need and he rescued them from their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper: all the waves of the sea were hushed. R. They rejoiced because of the calm and he led them to the haven they desired. Let them thank the Lord for his love, the wonders he does for men. R. 2 Corinthians 5:14-17 The love of Christ overwhelms us when we reflect that if one man has died for all, then all men should be dead; and the reason he died for all was so that living men should live no longer for themselves, but for him who died and was raised to life for them. From now onwards, therefore, we do not judge anyone by the standards of the flesh. Even if we did once know Christ in the flesh, that is not how we know him now. John spent his time in the desert, an ascetic. He began to announce the coming of the Kingdom, and to call everyone to a fundamental reformation of life. His purpose was to prepare the way for Jesus. His Baptism, he said, was for repentance. But One would come who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. John is not worthy even to carry his sandals. His attitude toward Jesus was: “He must increase; I must decrease” (John 3:30). John was humbled to find among the crowd of sinners who came to be baptized the one whom he already knew to be the Messiah. “I need to be baptized by you” (Matthew 3:14b). But Jesus insisted, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15b). Jesus, true and humble human as well as eternal God, was eager to do what was required of any good Jew. John thus publicly entered the community of those awaiting the Messiah. But making himself part of that community, he made it truly messianic. The greatness of John, his pivotal place in the history of salvation, is seen in the great emphasis Luke gives to the announcement of his birth and the event itself—both made prominently parallel to the same occurrences in the life of Jesus. John attracted countless people (“all Judea”) to the banks of the Jordan, and it occurred to some people that he might be the Messiah. But he constantly deferred to Jesus, even to sending away some of his followers to become the first disciples of Jesus. Perhaps John’s idea of the coming of the Kingdom of God was not being perfectly fulfilled in the public ministry of Jesus. For whatever reason, he sent his disciples (when he was in prison) to ask Jesus if he was the Messiah. Jesus’ answer showed that the Messiah was to be a figure like that of the Suffering Servant in Isaiah (chapters 49 through 53). John himself would share in the pattern of messianic suffering, losing his life to the revenge of Herodias.

girls who have already made their First Holy Communion. They remind us at every weekend Mass

that in the task of worship there is a place for everyone. Their ministry includes being an example to the rest of

the community through their faithful attention and participation during the liturgy.

Cursillo Weekend

An invitation is extended to you to attend a Men’s only Cursillo at St Raphael’s College on the James Cook University Campus in Townsville (with a Women’s Cursillo to follow) from the evening of Friday 3 July until the evening of Sunday 6 July 2015.

What is a CURSILLO three days? AN EXPERIENCE IN CHRISTIAN AND PERSONAL GROWTH THROUGH A SERIES OF TALKS, MEDIATATIONS, DISCUSSIONS,

in the unfolding of salvation. Yet the least in the kingdom, Jesus said, is greater than he, for the pure gift that the Fa-ther gives. The attractiveness as well as the austerity of John, his fierce courage in denouncing evil—all stem from his fundamental and total placing of his life within the will of God.

Quote:

"And this is not something which was only true once, long ago in the past. It is always true, because the repentance which he preached always remains the way into the king-dom which he announced. He is not a figure that we can forget now that Jesus, the true light, has appeared. John is always relevant because he calls for a preparation which all men need to make. Hence every year there are four weeks in the life of the Church in which it listens to the voice of the Baptist. These are the weeks of Advent" (A New Catechism).

Office Hours during the school holidays.

Please note that during the school holidays (29 June to 10 July) the office will only be open from 9.00am to 12 noon Monday to Friday . Normal office hours will resume on Monday 13th July.

Do you not care?

The experience of the disciples as their boat was tossed about the sea by the powerful storm may sound like a familiar situation. At times in life we may feel that we

have lost control of our situation and we are being blown from one ‘disaster’ to the next. At such times, we

may find ourselves asking the question that the disciples asked of Jesus, ‘Master, do you not care?’ Jesus’ reply to

the disciples suggests that had they been calm and trusted in the slow work of God then they would have

made it through the storm unharmed.
