PRESIDIO PARKWAYCONSTRUCTIONThe San Francisco CountyTransportation Authority, the FederalHighway Administration, and Caltrans

are replacing the highway that runsthrough the Presidio to the GoldenGate Bridge. This structure was

    formerly known as Doyle Drive.

Construction of the replacementroadwaythe new Presidio Parkwaybegan in 2009 and will be complete in

    2016.

The new roadway will be seismicallysafe and is designed to fit moreseamlessly into the park setting, with

fewer impacts on resources, views, and the visitor experience. A sectionof the roadway will be moved into at-

grade tunnels, allowing a magnificentnew park landscape to reconnect theCrissy Field waterfront to the Main

    Post.

Learn more about the roadwayreplacement project at the PresidioParkway website. Here you can

    register to receive constructionadvisories.

Additionally, special advisories are sentto Presidio residents, including those

living in neighborhoods that are mostaffected by construction. Register forPresidio resident advisories.

in the shower, laundry, and cookingareas

    Keep indoor surfaces dry

    Managing Insects and Pests

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)is an effective and environmentally

sensitive approach to controlling peststhat uses a combination of practices.IPM solves pest problems while

minimizing risks to people and theenvironment.

The Presidio Trusts first goal is to keepinsects and rodents from entering

buildings. To achieve this, the Trustcloses building cracks, seals below- orat-grade crawl spaces, and screens

    roof-top gutters.

If further measures are needed, trained staff members select the bestmanagement methods, limiting the

use of pesticides. The most effective,long-term way to manage pests is byusing a combination of techniques.

If you are concerned about insects

or rodents in or near your home, please contact the Presidio TrustWork Order Service Center. Prompt

    reporting and early treatment help

    keep buildings pest free.

    LIVING WITH

WILDLIFEThe Presidio is home to anextraordinarily diverse wildlifepopulation. More than 600 species,

from expansive birds of prey to NorthAmericas tiniest butterfly, make theirhome in the park. Even coyotes are

    regularly spotted here.

The diversity of wildlife extendsbeyond the typical urban wildlifeseen in most city parks and

neighborhoods. As one of the last largeopen spaces in San Francisco, thePresidio is truly a wildlife refuge.

The presence of wildlife around the

park enlivens both the visitor andresident experience with sounds andsights that capture the imagination and

deepen a sense of community andplace. Wildlife also provide importantecological functionspollinate flowers,

prey on pest species, decomposeorganic matter, and replenish nutrientsin soils.

    Birds

Because it is one of the largest openspaces in San Francisco, with plentiful

food and water, the Presidio is a havenfor many bird species seeking eithera permanent home or a safe resting

    place on a migratory journey.

More than 85 percent of the animalsregularly seen in the Presidio arebirdsincluding more than 65 species

that live and nest in the park, andup to 175 additional species calledneotropical migrants. Many of these

    migratory birds stop here (perhaps

in your backyard) during their annualtrips from their nesting grounds in the

tropics where they spend the winter, and northward again in the spring.

Species like Barn Swallows may neston your building and are protected

by the International Migratory BirdTreaty. If there is a problem with thelocation of a bird nest (e.g., the nest

is near a doorway), [email protected].

    Coyotes

Since 2002, coyotes have been seenin the Presidio and other parts of the

city. Coyotes are smart and adaptableanimals. Regular extended contactwith humans can cause them to lose

their natural fear of people and may inturn cause behavioral problems.

In order to keep coyotes naturally timidof human contact, please restrict food

sources (pet food and trash) and keepyour distance from coyotes. If youhave a direct close encounter with a

coyote in the Presidio you may scare

it away by making loud noises and/orwaving your arms. To report a coyote

How would you provide informationabout your valuables to police if your

If something happened to you, wouldyour loved ones know what youpossessed or where to find it?

To assist, the USPP offers Presidio

residents tools and information tocomplete their own personal homeinventory.

USPP will provide residents with a

    State of California Department of

    Insurance Home Inventory Guide.

Residents may complete the inventoryand store the guide in a secure

    ABOUT THE PRESIDIO

AND THE PRESIDIO TRUSTThe Presidio has a deep and richhistory. Presidio lands were hometo native peoples for more than a

thousand years. In 1776the sameyear this country was foundedthePresidio was established as Spains

northernmost outpost in the Americas. It then served as a Mexican frontier

outpost from 1822 until 1846, when itbegan its tenure as the most importantU.S. Army post on the Pacific Coast.

In 1989, Congress decided to closemany military basesincluding the

Presidio. The Presidio, however, wasfortunate to have a pre-ordained future.A 1972 law written by Congressman

Phillip Burton indicated that thePresidio would become part of thenational park system should the

    military ever leave.

As the Army prepared to depart, the community and the NationalPark Service began planning for

the Presidios future as a publicpark. However, the high costs oftransforming the Presidiowith nearly

800 buildings and the infrastructure ofa small townled some in Congress to

consider selling the post. The Presidiosfuture was uncertain.

Community advocates rallied, andCongresswoman Nancy Pelosiled a bipartisan effort to save the

Presidio through partnership betweengovernment and a broad coalition ofsupporters. A new federal agency,

the Presidio Trust, was formed in1998 to work with the National ParkService and the non-profit Golden

Gate National Parks Conservancyto combine public funding with

contributions from park tenants, residents, volunteers, donors, andothers. Congress mandated that the

Trust become financially self-sufficientwithin 15 years. In 2013, the Trustachieved that goal, ushering in a new

    era of public purpose.

The Presidio today is a partnership

park with many organizationsand individuals contributing to its

ongoing revitalization. Today, a diversecommunity lives and works in buildingsonce used by the military. Visitors

come from around the world toexperience nature and history, enjoypublic events, attend conferences, or

take in Golden Gate views. The Presidiois a vibrant place that invites discovery, welcomes the exchange of ideas, and

    inspires service.

    The Presidio

Located at the Golden Gate, thePresidio was the U.S. Armys

premier post for generations. Today,it is a National Historic LandmarkDistrict and a new kind of national

park site that offers broad benefitsfor the American people.

    The Presidio Trust

The Presidio Trust is an innovative

federal agency created to save thePresidio as forever a public place.
