Don Amero’s musical style has been likened toJohn Mayer meets Keith Urban. His four albums(Heart On My Sleeve, The Long Way Home,Deepening, Change Your Life) have generated ninenational/international awards, and more than twodozen nominations, including the 2013 JUNOs. He captivates audiences of all ages withpowerful and expressive vocals, percussion styleguitar play, and engaging storytelling. He is oftencalled upon as a keynote speaker, and to deliverworkshops for youth. His story inspires, and hismessage is one of encouragement, positivity andbeauty. He continues to impress wherever he goes. Don remembers it well. It was the day thatchanged his life. On September 15, 2007, hewalked off his job as a hardwood flooring installerand set out to pursue music fulltime. And what agood day that turned out to be! In the past fouryears, Don has released three albums thatgenerated two national awards and 12nominations. He has toured the country fromcoast-to-coast, been invited to play festivals, beenasked to perform with symphony accompaniment, and appeared on national television concerts. While a lot has happened for Don in a seeminglyshort time, in actuality, it was a long road for himto get to where he is today.

From the notoriously tough North End ofWinnipeg, Don faced his share of adversitygrowing up. With poverty, gangs, drugs andviolence all around, fortunately, his life wastempered by love, support, and faith in a GreaterPower. Shaped and molded by his ownexperiences, Don’s music now carries both thedepth of hardship and luminosity of hope. For allwho take the time to listen, his message is one ofencouragement, positivity and beauty, despite the

harshness of the world. Don’s desire to take aserious shot at music was ignited with theunexpected success of his debut album – fittinglycalled Change Your Life. Released in the fall of2006, it garnered the #1 spot on the NationalAboriginal Countdown and received a total ofseven nominations for the Aboriginal PeoplesChoice Music Awards (APCMAs). In February of2009, Don released his second album Deepening, which saw two more singles climb to #1 on theNational Aboriginal Countdown. Deepening alsoearned him Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year atthe Canadian Folk Music Awards, Male Artist ofthe Year at the Canadian Aboriginal MusicAwards, and two more nominations at theAPCMAs. His professionalism and perseverancecaught the attention of a local radio host, whobestowed Don with the James Brown HardestWorking Musician Award. While this one wasmeant to be a joke, in reality, it rings pretty true! His third album, The Long Way Home wasreleased in the fall of 2010. With impeccableproduction and presentation, The Long Way Homehas received great reviews from media and isgenerating excitement among fans. The country-flavoured first single Right Where I Wanna Be hasbeen featured on radio stations across Canada, and continues to climb the charts. Grateful for hissuccess so far, and eager to see what the futurebrings, Don’s decision to make music for a living isproving to be a good one. Don is deeply inspired by his life, his family, andhis surroundings. That’s why he makes a point ofspending as much time as possible at the cabin, canoeing in the wilderness, or traveling with hiswife. Because no matter what else is goi ng on, it’sthe little things that matter most to him.

Growing up, Betty Jo Haskins parents sold cornliquor and her living room was oft-times visitedby The Soul Stirrers, The Blind Boys of Missis-sippi, and many other traveling gospel groups ofthe day. By 16, she decided to change her nameto something more dramatic and thus, BettyLaVette was born. At the heart of the Bettye LaVette story, is thenotion of creative survival. It is her voice thatboth announces and ensures that survival; it isher voice that, no matter how dire the circum-stances, lets you know that she will not bedenied. It is her voice that compels you to listento every word she says, sings or writes. Thatvoice – rough, tender, sensuous and soaring – isan instrument of inspiration. Known for her covers of popular songs, LloydBradley from BBC Music praised Bettye for herunique approach: “When most other artists dothem, they’re cover versions. But when BettyeLaVette does them, they’re interpretations, suchis her talent for getting inside a song andextracting a depth of soul and meaning thatmight even surprise the original artist.” On her second album, the Grammy Awardnominated The Scene of the Crime, she trans-formed country and rock songs written by WillieNelson, Elton John, and Don Henley, amongothers, into devastating mini-dramas. In 2008,she performed a critically acclaimed version ofLove Reign O’er Me at The Kennedy Center Hon-ors in a tribute to The Who. Bettye had the honor of performing A ChangeIs Gonna Come with Jon Bon Jovi for Presidentelect Barack Obama on HBO’s telecast of thekick-off 2009 Inaugural Celebratory concert.

Later that year, she shared the stage with SirPaul McCartney and Ringo Starr at Radio CityMusic Hall for David Lynch’s Change BeginsWithin benefit concert. Bettye has appeared on The Tonight Show withJay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, TheConan O’Brien Show, The Late Late Show withCraig Ferguson, Lopez Tonight, Good MorningAmerica and The Today Show. “Bettye Lavette now rivals Aretha Franklin asthis generations most vital soul singer” – The NewYork Times.

THE WALKERVILLESThe Walkervilles have figured out the recipe, you see. The recipe for making music thattouches your soul, slaps it around a bit, caressesit, and leaves it wanting more in the best way. It’s no wonder that they are influenced by thegenre of music that is aptly named the same:soul. Throw in heavy influences of Motown andRock and what you’ve got is the unique abilityto make a lover out of a fan. Made of three musicians from Windsor,Ontario – Pat Robitaille, Mike Hargreaves andStefan Cvetkovic seamlessly fit together like asexy bowtie and a perfect-fitting suit.

New Wild Everywhere is the follow-up to Great LakeSwimmers’ critically acclaimed, Polaris Music Prizeshortlisted and Juno nominated 2009 album LostChannels. Their fifth album in just under a decade, thisnew collection of 12 tracks reveals a depth and maturitypreviously only hinted at by lead singer and songwriterTony Dekker. Featuring the touring band from Lost Channels, New

Wild Everywhere thematically picks up where the previousalbum left off, exploring transcendence in the naturalworld to describe the universal themes of love, mortalityand escape. For a band whose storied location recordings inincreasingly out-of-the-way places have brought theiroutput to an almost mythical status, longtime Great LakeSwimmers producer Andy Magoffin was thrilled to beasked to capture the new album in a real studio. Magoffinrecalls, “I finally got what I always wanted: Tony Dekkerasked me to help his band make a record in a real studio. No extension cords, boat rides, generators, buzzing flies, squirrel noise, missing connectors, furnace cycles, motorcycles, faulty rentals, bad weather or bad headphonemixes to mess things up. We chose to work in Toronto atRevolution Recording, a brand new studio with brand neweverything, except for the old stuff which is also brandnew. We had access to a great many microphones, instruments, processors and people we would notnormally have had the privilege of working with.” “We wanted to try something new, expand ourhorizons, and flex a bit of the creative muscle we’ve builtup through years of touring,” says Dekker. “It came as abit of a surprise how well we functioned as a band in thatenvironment. We were able to focus completely on thesongs, rather than the logistical obstacles of waiting forthe boat to dock, or the rain to stop. The folks atRevolution felt like extended family and the studio itselfis a real Toronto gem.” However, no Great Lake Swimmers album would be

complete without at least one field recording. The song

The Great Exhale was recorded in an abandoned Torontosubway station, down three long flights of stairs whereMagoffin and the band had to wait until the wee hours ofthe morning for the trains to stop overhead before theycould hit the record button. “We set up a studio from scratch on the moistflorescent-lit oil-coated subway platform of the unusedLower Bay Station. It was bleak. I could not tell if therecording was any good, because our playback system wasnearly useless in the echoing, cavernous tunnel. When wefinally listened to the results, we were amazed to hearhow beautifully the song fit with the other album tracks,”says Magoffin. “Somehow, Great Lake Swimmers soundjust like they should no matter what tools they’re using orhow far they get from civilization.” Dekker has spent the last decade entrancing listenerswith his unforgettable voice and compelling songwriting.Great Lake Swimmers have long been a word-of-mouthfavorite in their home country of Canada for whomcritical mass was inevitable. They’ve been regarded as anational treasure by the CBC, with Lost Channels (2009)topping the charts at CBC Radio 3 and on the iTunesSinger/Songwriter Chart. In the U.S., Lost Channelsdebuted at #10 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart andwas a favorite among influential bloggers and NPR staff. The band has received public endorsements by the likesof Feist, Robert Plant, NBC Nightly News anchor BrianWilliams and cyclist Lance Armstrong. The latter two haveboth raved about the band on their personal websites; theformer have handpicked the band to open shows andwhole tours. Josh Groban has been known to open hisshow with a Great Lake Swimmers cover, and the bandhas shared the stage with such varied artists as Calexico,Sarah Harmer, Bela Fleck & The Sparrow Quartet,Hayden, Sloan, Goldfrapp, and Bill Callahan of Smog. With timeless melodies telling undiscovered stories,Great Lake Swimmers’ New Wild Everywhere maintains anacute respect for the folk tradition, while at the same timetransforming it for new listeners everywhere.

JakeShimabukUro

Thursday, March 5 at 8 p.m. • Dan Cooper Concert Series

In his young career, ukulele wizard JakeShimabukuro has already redefined aheretofore under-the-radar instrument, been declared a musical “hero” by RollingStone, won accolades from the disparatelikes of Eddie Vedder, Perez Hilton and Dr.Sanjay Gupta, wowed audiences on TV(Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O’Brien), earnedcomparisons to Jimi Hendrix and MilesDavis, and even played in front of theQueen of England. With his new record Grand Ukulele,Shimabukuro’s star may burn even brighter. An ambitious follow-up to 2011’s Peace,Love, Ukulele (which debuted at #1 on theBillboard World Charts), the Hawaiianmusician’s new record finds himcollaborating with legendary producer/engineer Alan Parsons, best known for hiswork on Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon,The Beatles’ Abbey Road and his ownhighly successful solo project. “It was very organic how it happened,”says Shimabukuro (she-ma-boo-koo-row).“He attended a couple of my shows near

where he lives in Santa Barbara and theconcert promoter put us in touch. I wasstunned. I mean, THE Alan Parsons? Weended up having dinner before the showand he casually mentioned the idea ofpossibly working together on a project. Itwas a priceless opportunity I didn’t want topass up – he’s a genius.” Parsons ended up helping Shimabukuroexpand his sound, bringing in a 29-pieceorchestra and a big-name rhythm section, including drummer Simon Phillips (TheWho, Toto), session superstar bassistRandy Tico and Kip Winger (Winger, AliceCooper), who helped with the orchestration. “The best thing was that, even with allthose people, we recorded everything livewith no overdubs,” says Shimabukuro. “Itwas great, tracking live with an orchestraand a rhythm section. We picked up oneach other’s subtle emotional cues – youcould feel everyone breathing together. Itwas like the old days of recording – wheneveryone tracked together – there’s acertain magic that happens.”

When Mike and Pam Monkhouse opened the doors ofOakville Blueprinting in 1976, blueprints were actuallyblue, photocopiers were black and white, and digitalprinting was just a concept. Back then, they focussedprimarily on the printing and production of blueprintsfor architects and builders. Today, although they stillservice that market, they’re definitely way more thanjust blueprints!

For almost 40 years they have grown their familybusiness by continually sourcing new media and newequipment to stay at the forefront of the digital printingand reprographic industry. If the technology is out there, you can bet they have it.

PERSONAL SERVICEWhat hasn’t changed over the lastfour decades is theircommitment to exceptional,hands-on customer service.

When you walk into theirbusiness today, you will morethan likely be greeted by Mike,Jenn, Katie or Dan – the secondgeneration of Monkhouses.

They are commited to providethe personal attention and theone-on-one service you can onlyget from a small firm. Whetherit’s turning a family photo into afull colour poster, or printing50,000 brochures for a corporateclient, their goal is to exceedcustomer expectations.

“One of the most important lessons we learned fromour Dad,” says Katie, “was to treat every customer withthe same respect. Every job is important.”

YOU CAN DO THAT, TOO?The only “problem” Oakville Blueprinting has, is helpingpeople get past their name.

“I can’t tell you how many times a customer has said tome, You can do that, too?, comments Jenn. “And whenthey find out that we actually can, they’re thrilled!”

Full colour posters, brochures, postcards, signs and

banners, business cards, bound reports, manuals. Smallor large quantities. They do it all. And they do it very well.

“With the today’s technology, the possibilities areendless both for individuals and corporate clients,” Danexplains, “We can even take your favourite photo orimage and turn it into wallpaper – virtually any size!”

Now that’s impressive.

THE NEXT STEP – onpress!Over the past year, they have opened a new division inOakville – onpress – providing traditional offset printingon a 4-colour Heildelberg press.

“Sometimes you have to take astep back to keep moving for-ward.” Mike says.

“Our customers would ask uswho we would recommend toprint jobs that were not particu-larly cost-effective using today’sshort-run digital technology.”

“Now I can tell them – onpress! We’re on a mission to bring backinspired, traditional print productsand at the same time fill a void inthe Oakville area.”

Using established offset pr intingtechniques, with a mix of vintageand state-of-the-art printingequipment, their keen eye forquality gained from decades ofexperience has made this newcompany a success already. Andtheir onpress website has been

designed to help those who are new to the traditionaloffset printing process.

“When you visit our onpress website, you’ll see thatwe’ve taken the time to walk you through the prepress, production and postpress process and we’ve evencreated a commonly asked questions area. There’s also asection where you can download templates that are setup specifically to help you create files that will result inthe perfect offset print job.”

Sounds good, Mike. There’s no doubt about it. OakvilleBlueprinting is “way more than just blueprints.”

Jenn, Mike, Dan & Katie Monkhouse have carried on the business their parents started in 1976.

They have just been nominated for an OABE Award(Oakville Awards for Business Excellence).

With over 50 million albums sold around the worldAlan Parsons quickly established himself as a perform-ing artist alongside his outstanding reputation as aproducer and arranger. With hit albums that includeTales of Mystery and Imagination (1976), I Robot(1977), Pyramid (1978), Eve (1979), The Turn of aFriendly Card (1980), Eye in the Sky (1982) and manymore, their focus was on very high quality studiosound production. Alan was fortunate enough to work as assistant engi-neer on the last two albums by The Beatles and afterhe qualified as a fully-fledged recording engineer, hewent on to work with Paul McCartney and The Holliesamong many others. But it was his contribution asengineer on Pink Floyd’s classic Dark Side Of The Moonthat really got him world attention. That soon led tostriking successes as a producer - notably with Pilot’sMagic, John Miles’ Highfly and Music and SteveHarley’s Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me). He alsoproduced the hugely successful Year Of The Cat albumwith Al Stewart and two albums with American pro-gressive rock band Ambrosia.

In 1975 he met Eric Woolfson who not only becamehis manager, but joined forces with Alan as a songwrit-ing and performing partner for what became known asThe Alan Parsons Project. The APP’s debut album,Tales Of Mystery And Imagination based on the worksof Edgar Allan Poe paved the way for a signing to CliveDavis’ newly launched Arista label and a string of hitalbums, namely I Robot (1977), Pyramid (1978), TheTurn of a Friendly Card (1980), Eye in the Sky (1982),Ammonia Avenue (1984), Vulture Culture (1985),Stereotomy (1986) and Gaudi (1987). With his long-standing previous APP collaborators, guitarist Ian Bairnson, drummer Stuart Elliott and

orchestral arranger Andrew Powell, Alan dropped the“Project” identity for Alan Parsons - Try Anything Oncein 1994. The partnership continued for On Air in 1996and The Time Machine in 1999. During this time thefirst incarnation of “Alan Parsons Live Project” touredto sell-out audiences throughout the globe. FollowingAlan’s relocation to California, a new Live Project bandwas formed in 2003. Another band reshuffle happenedin 2010. The current live band consists of Alan onacoustic guitar, keyboards and vocals, P.J. Olsson onvocals, Manny Foccarazzo on keyboards, Guy Erez onbass, Alastair Greene on guitar, Danny Thompson onDrums, and Todd Cooper on sax, percussion and vocals.

The album A Valid Path, Alan’s foray into electronicawas released in 2004 and featured Pink Floyd’s DavidGilmour, The Crystal Method, Shpongle, Uberzone, PJOlsson and Alan’s son, Jeremy. 2008 saw the reissue ofall the Alan Parsons Project albums in expanded form, containing never-before-heard bonus material and a 2-CD compilation called The Essential Collection. One ofthe most familiar Project tracks is Sirius, perhaps bestknown as the Chicago Bulls theme. It was also used asthe walk-on music for The New Orleans Saints at theirtriumphant Superbowl game in 2010 and at the 2012European Cup soccer matches. Sirius has also beenfeatured at countless other sporting events and in themovies Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and Beerfest. Alan has come full circle and is back in his role asproducer and engineer both at his own Santa Barbarastudio and other studios internationally. Alan pro-duced an album called Grand Ukulele with JakeShimabukoro, the virtuoso ukulele player, whoseYouTube video of While My Guitar Gently Weeps hasreceived over ten million hits! The Oakville CentreCLASSIC ALBUMS LIVE Series

The Eagles • Thursday, April 9 at 8 p.m.

Founded by Craig Martin in 2003, Toronto-based Classic Albums Liverecreates famous rock albums without the gimmickry, relying solely on

the music. It has become the ultimate destination for music loverswanting to hear the greatest albums performed live.

On their first four albums, the Eagles were at pains to demonstrate that they were a group of atleast near-equals, each getting a share of the songwriting credits and lead vocals. But this com-pilation drawn from those albums, comprising the group’s nine Top 40 hits plus Desperado, demonstrates that this evenhandedness did not extend to singles – as far as those go, the Eaglesbelong to Glenn Frey and Don Henley. The tunes are melodic, and the arrangements – full ofstrummed acoustic guitars over a rock rhythm section often playing a shuffle beat, topped bytenor-dominated harmonies – are immediatelyengaging. There is also a lyrical consistency tothe songs, which often concern romanticuncertainties in an atmosphere soaked in intox-icants. The narrators of the songs usually seemexhausted, if not satiated, and the lopingrhythms are appropriate to these impressions. All of which means that, unlike the albumsfrom which they come, these songs make up acollection consistent in mood and identity, which may help explain why their Greatest Hits(1971-1975) works so much better than theband’s previous discs and practically makesthem redundant. No wonder it was such a bighit out of the box, topping the charts and becoming the first album ever certified platinum. Still, there must be more to it, since the album wasn't just a big hit, but one of the biggest ever, becom-ing one of the very few discs to cross the threshold of 20 million copies and competing for thetitle of best-selling album of all time. There may be no explaining that, really, except to note thatthis was the pervasive music of the first half of the 1970s, and somehow it never went away.

A true Canadian story about living dangerously and creating furiously – together. What if someone told you that you could create the life you've always dreamed?Once upon a time, a group of miners did just that. Tompkinsville is the story of a Cape Breton mining town transformed from despon-dency to independence thanks to a rebel priest's belief we can all become “masters ofour own destiny” – with a book in one hand and our neighbour’s hand in the other. It tells the story of Father Jimmy Tompkins, Joe Laben and the Canadian co-opera-tive movement. Ripe with East Coast humour, fierce with the fight for survival anduplifting with faith in fellow man, Tompkinsville features original music naturalisti-cally within its story, played by two musicians side-stage. From rousing strike songsto soft lullabies to toe-tapping Cape Breton ditties, Tompkinsville’s music enhances thejourney of Joe Laben on his quest to get a home for his family – a quest that leads himto become more than he ever dreamed he could. Discover what can happen when you realize if you can dream it you can do it. And you can do it – it’s been proven before: Tompkinsville.

LINDSAY KYTEWhether it's travelling to a new country for an assignment, embarking on a new the-atre project or just going to the dentist, it seems everywhere Lindsay Kyte goes shefinds a story – often in addition to the ones she is there to tell. Though she has madea career as a writer and performer of seeking the heart of others' stories, it seems thestories of her own that she stumbles across are the ones that catch ears and hearts, changing those who hear them. Telling her own stories has found Lindsay shakingPaul McCartney’s hand, having her work read by thousands, carrying a symbol ofhope across continents on the lapel of her jacket and appearing on jumbo screens ashundreds wept as she told a tale close to their hearts. In 2007, Lindsay Kyte opened a book and found her Great Uncle Joe and Great AuntMary Laben staring determinedly up at her from the page, labelled as pioneers of theco-operative movement. Lindsay's life changed on the spot. It was then that her questto tell the incredible story of Tompkinsville as a stage play began, leading Lindsay her-self on a journey of coincidences, miracles and situations that leave you shaking yourhead in disbelief.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARSFOR 20 YEARS, THEY’VE BEEN HERE FOR THECOMMUNITY.Just over 20 years ago, this not for profit charity calledThe Community Foundation of Oakville (renamed TheOakville Community Foundation) was established. Aninitial gift of $355,000 was provided and in just oneyear The Foundation made an initial grant of $10,000to the Waterfront stage in Coronation Park. Today TheFoundation is able to grant annually to charities over$2 million.

CELEBRATING SOMETHING SPECIAL IN THEFOUNDATION'S 20TH YEAR! To start The Foundation’ s 20th year, they celebrated with the launch oftwo new initiatives that are aptly tiedto a connection with Canada’s Gover-nor General David Johnston, patronof the National Community Founda-tion movement. He challenged allcommunity foundations, as weapproach our country’s 150th birth-day in 2017, to imagine our country asit could be – a “smart and caringnation” that holds promise for every-one. On June 25th, The Foundationunveiled their Smart & Caring Initia-tives: Vital Grants and Vital Loans.Vital Grants aligns a portion of The Foundations’ sus-tained granting in order to move beyond “symptomaticrelief” and to achieve “transformational change” in peo-ple’s lives. It’s the first ever multi year funding TheFoundation has implemented.

The first Vital Grant recipient was announced for anew initiative in Oakville – “Homeward Bound Halton”(HBH). HBH is a transformational, coordinated servicedelivery model that uses a unique, innovative model toprovide wraparound services to help single mother leadfamilies. Support includes a fully furnished apartmentfor up to 4 years, college education, job internships, fully funded daycare, and career placements. TheFoundation, together with their Fundholders, arefunding the college education of the first cohort of 5women, at a cost of $5,000/woman per year, for threeyears.

SO WHAT IS THE OAKVILLE COMMUNITYFOUNDATION?The Foundation is a conduit between the passions ofphilanthropic families and the needs of the community. As a registered charity, The Foundation is one of thelargest members of a national network of over 190Canadian community foundations. They supportindividuals, families and corporations who come fromall walks of life, economic backgrounds and charitableinterests that have one thing in common – a desire tomake a difference today and leave a legacy tomorrowfor Oakville. Vital Grants is just one example of theways in which The Foundation can and does work

together to achieve greater and moresustainable solutions. We all careabout our homes, our communities, the places we have lived, played, worked, and raised a family and manyof us want to find a way to give backto these places. The Foundation hasbeen making it possible to give backto the community now, and leave alegacy for the future since 1994.

CLOSER

Set to composer Philip Glass’s Mad Rush, the duet Closer isperformed for BJM by the magnetic Céline Cassone and the solidpartner, Alexander Hille. Performed and acclaimed on several worldstages, Closer is a voluptuous and vibrant exchange, imbued with anintense yet simple sensuality, that of the tension between twobodies. Over the course of twenty minutes, Céline Cassone iscarried, pulled and lifted with movements of crystalline beauty anddelicacy, rousing the sentiments of the audience, who aretransported into the couple’s passionate relationship.

KOSMOS

In this new work for BJM, the choreographer draws his inspirationfrom the world we live in, the frenetic pace of everyday urban life. His observations were the trigger for creating choreography inspiredby the movements of crowds, moments of agitation, and the hustleand bustle of the city. Andonis Foniadakis searches for acounterbalance, bringing beauty to the fore and turning freneticmovement into a dance that brings people together in a joyous, liberating fashion.

HARRY

For this new creation, made-to-measure for the BJM dancers, theIsraeli-American chor eographer Barak Marshall was inspired by theinner battles we all wage. “Life is a constant struggle,” he says, “inwhich we are continually faced with conflicts with regard to culture, gender and species.” Between men and women, in particular, compromises must be made to achieve a balance. ABOUTLes Ballets Jazz deMontréal

Led by the masterfulcommand of Artistic DirectorLouis Robitaille, BJM is arepertory company thatpresents a hybrid form ofdance that combines theaesthetics of classical balletand embraces many otherdifferent styles of dance. Verycontemporary in its currentapproach, BJM performancesare sexy, explosive, originaland accessible, and its superbdancers are widely acclaimed. The term “jazz” in the namerefers more to a “jazzing up”of classical ballet rather thana musical or dance style.

“The tension between the haunting rhythms of the accompanying musical inspirationMad Rush by Phillip Glass and the new flavours introduced by Millpied to the neo-classical realm worked extremely well. His choreographic touches were intricate and delicate, yet seemed effortless.” ~ ORA BRAFMAN, Jerusalem Post

The Oakville Centre Comedy Series

COMEDYACES

Starring “That Canadian Guy” Glen Foster Friday, May 8 at 8 p.m.

Oakville’s own Glen Foster (“That Canadian Guy”) headlinesalong with a crew of Canadian comedy top guns. No junior jokejockeys here. Everyone on this squad is a seasoned pro withdecades of experience and hundreds of confirmed “kills”.You’ve seen them on shows like Just For Laughs, Comedy Nowand The Winnipeg Comedy Festival. Don't miss your chance tosee them live. (No F-bombs or graphic sexual material).

GLEN FOSTERA veteran of the Canadian comedy scene, Glen has been apopular headliner for over 25 years. His Gemini nominatedcomedy special That Canadian Guy struck a chord for itshilarious, but dead on portrayal of the conflicted Canadianpsyche. After it aired, he received a flood of congratulatory e-mail, much of it along the lines of: “I couldn’t remember yourname, but I remembered That Canadian Guy.” Glen’s comedy appeals to those people who appreciate amore intelligent and slightly “edgy” brand of humour. Hismaterial is mostly clean and always clever, topical and timely, reflecting his own experiences as well as current events andpopular culture. He’s also not afraid to inject his own politicaland often “politically incorrect” opinions and socialcommentary. It’s all in good fun though, and his intention isnever to shock or offend.

Founded by Craig Martin in 2003, Toronto-based Classic Albums Liverecreates famous rock albums without the gimmickry, relying solely on

the music. It has become the ultimate destination for music loverswanting to hear the greatest albums performed live.

Prince designed Purple Rain as the project that would make him a superstar, and, sur-prisingly, that is exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitiousthan any of his previous records, Purple Rain finds Prince consolidating his funk andR&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal with nine superblycrafted songs. Even its best-known songs don't tread conventional territory: the bass-less When Doves Cry is an eerie, spareneo-psychedelic masterpiece; Let's GoCrazy is a furious blend of metallic gui-tars, stonesy riffs, and a hard funkbackbeat; the anthemic title track is amajestic ballad filled with brilliant guitarflourishes. Although Prince’s songwritingis at a peak, the presence of the Revolu-tion pulls the music into sharper focus, giving it a tougher, more aggressive edge. And, with the guidance of Wendy andLisa, Prince pushed heavily into psyche-delia, adding swirling strings to thedreamy Take Me With U and the hard rockof Baby I'm a Star. Even with all of his new, but uncompromising, forays into pop,Prince hasn’t abandoned funk, and the robotic jam of Computer Blue and the menac-ing grind of Darling Nikki are among his finest songs. Taken together, all of the stylisticexperiments add up to a stunning statement of purpose that remains one of the mostexciting rock & roll albums ever recorded.
